Thai airports will be allowed to open and search checked baggage without passengers present from 16 October 2026 under new aviation security regulations issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). The regulation, issued on 24 February, authorizes operators of public airports to inspect checked baggage if there are reasonable grounds to suspect it contains prohibited items, explosives, dangerous goods or other items banned from being carried on aircraft. Security screening officers will be authorized to open suspicious baggage and confiscate prohibited items without returning them to the passenger. Further action will be taken in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. Passengers will not need to be present when a checked bag is opened. Officers will record the inspection and leave a notice inside the baggage informing the owner that it has been searched. CAAT recommends that passengers use internationally recognized baggage locks, such as TSA-approved locks, which can be opened by authorized security personnel using a master key or tool. If a bag cannot be opened, officers may break the lock to conduct the inspection, with no compensation required for damage to the lock. The new rules are intended to strengthen Thailand's aviation security measures and bring them in line with international standards.

On August 9, customs officials at Chom checkpoint in Surin, led by Prasit Deejongcharoen, seized 15,000 counterfeit cigarettes worth approximately 14.5 million baht that were discovered in Nakhon Ratchasima province during late July. The seized goods will be destroyed according to law, following coordination with postal authority officials Somkiat Kampila and Nawin Promchim, who jointly launched the "No Smoking This Month" operation to intercept contraband.

Prasit explained that the government prioritizes combating all types of smuggled goods to ensure fair taxation and protect public health from products that could cause long-term health and medical system costs. The customs chief emphasized that nearly all the seized cigarettes were counterfeit, and because of prolonged illegal transportation methods, most showed signs of mold contamination.

The operation, which intensified enforcement along high-risk smuggling routes, successfully prevented the distribution of over 15,000 cigarettes across three northeastern provinces. Prasit vowed to continue protecting residents from online cigarette smuggling fraud and pledged the customs department would pursue full investigations to identify and prosecute the smugglers in accordance with government policy.

On August 9 at Parliament, the opposition parties' coordination committee, led by Prit Watcharasindhoo, held a session scrutinizing evidence in a Senate corruption case involving four senators and financial irregularities. Yiangcheep Atcharnnon, director of the Internet Law Project, presented findings showing Senator Sompaan Plaisak of Amnat Charoen claimed a 12-year history selling chicken-green mango noodles, but investigation revealed his noodle shop had been a fitness center, then changed to fish noodles, and later duck noodles—with the business operating only since 2015, less than ten years. Yiangcheep questioned whether Sompaan truly owned the business and met the ten-year experience requirement, noting the shop owner, Siripol Ruengboon, a local councilor, appeared in photos with a Bhumjaithai Party MP. He also revealed that multiple senators appointed close relatives and associates as aides across party lines—Sompaan appointed his son Nathpong as aide to another senator, and appointed Saiw Chammanon as an expert despite sharing the same surname—and called for public scrutiny of similar patterns across other provinces.

On August 9 at 3 p.m., the parents of a 13-year-old seventh-grade student injured in a shooting at Thepsirin School in Nonthaburi filed a police report and handed over evidence including the boy's shirt with a bullet hole near the collar. The student was shot in the left cheek by another student but narrowly survived, as the bullet grazed him.

According to the mother's account, the boy attended school as usual that day. During the shooting incident, he was seeking shelter when he inadvertently encountered the gunman and was struck by a bullet. It remains unclear whether the shooter intended to hit the boy directly or if it was stray fire.

The parents firmly stated they had no prior acquaintance with the shooter, who attended a different grade level. Although the boy remains frightened after the incident, he is trying to stay strong, and his mother is providing close emotional support.

When asked about threatening social media messages predicting violence on August 17-18, the mother dismissed them as likely fake news. She appealed to parents and the public to consume news responsibly, suggesting the posts are social media manipulation. She also defended the school, saying it bears no fault and has stringent security measures in place. As an educator herself, she maintains confidence in the school's protocols. Regarding a Thai language teacher mentioned online, the mother confirmed her son had studied with this teacher but experienced no problems.

The father expressed concern about the spread of false reports and threats of further violence on social media, and urged people to stop sharing such misinformation. He also asked that people refrain from blaming the deceased—whether a teacher or student—for allegedly triggering the 14-year-old gunman's actions.

On August 9, 2026, Toon Veegan, or Prakasit Krueabut, a national bodybuilding athlete, posted angrily after foreign tourists identified as Israeli nationals allegedly harassed him in the early morning at a hotel in the Pratunam area of Bangkok.

Toon recounted that he was peacefully sleeping at the hotel around 2 AM when a group of people suddenly banged heavily on his room door four times with tremendous force while he and his wife were sound asleep. The group was laughing loudly, shouting, and talking boisterously without regard for others. After a while, he heard them slam their room door loudly.

He called the hotel to complain and was told the group was Israeli tourists. "People often speak negatively about you," Toon wrote, "and only defenders come to your aid. But today I've witnessed with my own eyes what you're really like. Don't bother me. You've startled and frightened my beloved wife, fearing someone might harm us."

Toon expressed his frustration, saying: "I won't tolerate this. This is Thailand, this is my home. Show some respect to the owner of the house. I'm awake now and exhausted. Soon I'll make a proper video criticizing them. Just wait and see. How dare you traumatize my beloved wife's emotions. I'll prepare a video for you. Stay tuned."
