A bitter online dispute has flared between Thai and Japanese sports fans over problems at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. The host nation has drawn heavy criticism for various organizational failures, including accommodation and training facility issues, as well as food provision. Thai athletes have already been affected: the Thai Sepak Takraw team could not access lodging, and the Tekball team posted reviews of competition venue meals, noting that portions appeared too small and nutritionally inadequate for athletes.
The controversy continues to dominate online discussion. The latest clash began when an X user posted a comparison showing that athlete meals at the Hangzhou Asian Games appeared more abundant. A Japanese X user then responded with a comment asking whether Thai athletes came from a country facing food shortages. Thai social media users immediately fired back, arguing that they simply enjoy eating well because they come from a country with 24-hour restaurants, and suggesting that the host's food provision was skimpy—comparable to an offering made to spirits in Thai tradition.
Thai sports fans further responded to the comment, stating: "Sorry, but Thailand produces food year-round and we have food available 24 hours. That's different from your country. If you can't manage food provision properly, next time tell your government not to dare host international events."
