Aichi Governor Criticizes Thai Takraw Team Over Food Complaints
Aichi Governor Hideaki Omura criticized Thailand's national takraw team for complaining about insufficient meals at the Asian Games, suggesting they were only seeking social media attention. He said he would prefer the athletes not come and accused them of exaggerating the food shortage for views. The remarks, made in a Japanese media interview, have upset many Japanese who note the organizers' own management failures and lack of hospitality.
Aichi Governor Hideaki Omura expressed dissatisfaction in a recent interview with Japanese media over criticism of the Asian Games organizers, after Thailand's national takraw team posted complaints about insufficient food provided to athletes, suggesting they were only seeking social media engagement. During a weekly press conference, Omura was questioned about the recently concluded Asian Games and referenced the food issue, saying the Thai takraw team had to seek meals outside the venue. He remarked that he wondered what the athletes were really doing, said he would rather they not come, and accused them of exaggerating the food shortage for views, adding he did not want such participants. Earlier, Omura had apologized as event chairman for various mistakes but denied that the food shortage was the organizers' fault, blaming the subcontracted agency. The remarks to Japanese media upset many Japanese, as the problem stemmed from the organizers' own management failures, the language was deemed too harsh for someone in his position, and lacked the hospitality spirit (omotenashi) valued in Japan. Historically, Omura has often used blunt language and has frequently clashed with Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura.
