Villagers Threaten to Kill Family Over Teen's Dream Accusation
Villagers in Sop Moei district, Mae Hong Son province, have threatened to kill an extended family of over 40 members after a teenager claimed his illness resulted from black magic by the family’s grandparents and aunt. The family fled their homes and sought help from the Sai Mai Tong Rot page, while police mediated an agreement that favored the villagers’ demands. Despite the settlement, threats persist and the relatives remain unable to return to their residences.
According to reports dated October 6, 2069, a young descendant of an established family in Sop Moei district went to the Sai Mai Tong Rot Facebook page for help after his relatives, totaling more than 40 people, fell into deep fear. They said they had been driven out of their homes by villagers who claimed a teenager’s recurring illness was caused by black magic placed on him by the family’s grandparents and youngest aunt. The rumor spread quickly, leading villagers to confront the family and demand they move back to the grandparents’ house to limit their presence. Initially, villagers and community leaders had agreed to a ‘drink the oath water’ ritual and to expel only two households—the grandparents’ and the aunt’s—but after further discussion they escalated to demanding the expulsion of the entire clan, covering six lineages and seven families with over 30 members. Villagers then issued an ultimatum, threatening to kill the whole family if they did not leave by the 10th of the month, disregarding the law. The frightened young man filed a complaint at Kong Koi Police Station and contacted the Rights Protection Center seeking justice and safety. Police mediated for over ten hours, but the resulting agreement favored the villagers: it required the grandparents and aunt to drink the oath water, immediately vacate their homes, never return, have their houses demolished, and cut all ties with the rest of the clan. Despite the agreement, tensions remain high, the family fears the threats will be carried out, and they have been unable to return to their homes, living instead outside the village under difficult and anxious conditions.
