CPF, Kasetsart Launch Aquatic Breed Upgrade For Thai Farmers
CPF and Kasetsart University have signed a research agreement to upgrade aquatic animal breeds for Thai farmers. The project seeks to develop faster‑growing, disease‑resistant fish and shrimp that boost yields and lower production costs. Results will support breeding programs and farming practices to enhance competitiveness and national food security.
The collaboration between Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Fisheries and Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) focuses on enhancing the genetics of economically important fish species. Asst. Prof. Dr. Suriyan Thanyakitjanakit, dean of the faculty, noted that Thai aquaculture generates tens of billions of baht annually and supplies vital protein, but farmers face rising production costs, unpredictable weather, and shifting market demands. Mr. Phong Wisetpaihoot, CPF’s vice‑president for aquatic business, said the company will continuously develop high‑quality breeds that offer consistent growth, survival, and reasonable production costs. By integrating genetic knowledge with CPF’s production and market experience, the research aims to create breeds that meet real‑world farming needs and consumer preferences. Findings will inform breeding programs and farming technologies, tested under actual farm conditions to evaluate impacts on productivity and costs for farmers.
