Thai Athletes Urged to Embody Sportsmanship at Asian Games
Thailand's sports minister urged national athletes heading to the 2025 Asian Games in Nagoya to compete with sportsmanship and represent Thai culture globally, emphasizing that victory must be grounded in respect for opponents and rules.
At Government House on September 10, Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Pancharoenworrakul addressed the Thai Olympic Committee, officials, and athletes before their departure for the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2025. The minister conveyed the government's and Thai people's congratulations to all selected athletes, crediting their success to diligence, discipline, and genuine commitment to training and exemplary conduct. The government prioritizes promoting fitness and sports to build the physical, mental, and intellectual health of all citizens, strengthening Thailand's human resources for national development.
Minister Surasak emphasized that athletes competing in major sporting events must recognize their dual role: not only as national representatives but also as cultural ambassadors spreading Thai traditions, customs, and identity internationally. He stressed that while victory is desired, it must be grounded in sportsmanship, respect for rules and opponents, gracious acceptance of both winning and losing, and support for all competitors. Athletes must remember they compete to build friendships, not create enemies.
"Today's address is conveyed on behalf of the Prime Minister, who is currently on an official visit to Norway and will return on September 11," the minister said. "The Prime Minister views all of you as important representatives of Thailand's dignity and prestige, and sends personal encouragement for your continued success."
