Thai Boxing Team Eyes Gold With Star Prospect at Asian Games
Thailand's 11-member amateur boxing team will compete at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, with female fighter Natanichcha Jongprogklang considered the best medal prospect in the 54kg division.
Thai Amateur Muaythai Association President Pichai Chunhavachir addressed the national boxing team ahead of their departure for the 2026 Asian Games, highlighting female boxer Natanichcha Jongprogklang in the 54kg division as the team's best chance for a gold medal. The federation announced its 11-member squad on September 8 at the International Standard Training Center, with six male boxers and five female boxers competing in Nagoya, Japan, between September 19 and October 4. Pichai acknowledged that medal prospects face challenges due to several factors and the predominance of experienced fighters, but expressed confidence in Jongprogklang, noting that with a favorable draw and luck, she has a realistic shot at gold. He confirmed that in addition to national sports development fund allocations, management will secure supplementary funding for the team.
The male contingent includes Krungpee Bokuntod (55kg), Saktida Rumtam (60kg), Bunlong Sinsiri (70kg), Weeraphol Jongjaw (80kg), Chakrapong Yumkot (90kg), and Arthpong Sangthep (90kg-plus). Among them is 19-year-old rising star Krungpee Bokuntod, making his Asian Games debut and eager to compete for a medal. The female team comprises Chutamaht Ruksatya (51kg), Natanichcha Jongprogklang (54kg), Punravee Ruenros (60kg), Chancharaem Suwannapheng (65kg), and Phontip Buapa (75kg). Jongprogklang, competing in her first Asian Games after three years in the weight class facing varied opponents, expressed confidence in her medal prospects. The full squad will depart for Nagoya for final training camp preparations, with competition beginning September 21 and finals on October 2.
