Thai Finance Ministry Denies Fake IMF Claim on Fragile Economy
Thai Finance Ministry denied a false report that the IMF chief labeled Thailand's economy fragile while ASEAN grows. It said Thailand benefits from AI investment and is ready to handle related risks from the start. The clarification cited IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva's October 14, 2069 remarks on global high interest rates and borrowing costs.
The Thai Ministry of Finance issued a clarification stating that the claim that the IMF managing director described Thailand's economy as fragile while ASEAN expands is fake news. It emphasized that Thailand benefits from the rapid growth of AI investment and is ready to manage the risks that may arise from such investments from the beginning. According to the ministry, Kristalina Georgieva spoke at the 2026 IMF‑WBG Annual Meetings during the IMF Managing Director Press Briefing session on 14 October 2069. She said the world is moving into a period of elevated interest rates and borrowing costs due to global factors such as inflation, rising AI‑driven investment, and long‑term growth trends. Higher borrowing costs for emerging markets stem from the overall rise in global interest rates, not from widening risk spreads, and emerging‑market rate spreads remain relatively stable. The ministry added that Thailand has many opportunities to link with the regional economy, is one of the countries gaining from AI investment, and has prepared to confront any risks stemming from the AI investment trend at an early stage.
