Thai Meteorological Dept Warns of Variable Weather, Heavy Southern Rain
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued its October forecast, warning of variable weather and thunderstorms in the first half of the month before cooler mornings arrive, while the south faces heavy to very heavy rain and seas with 2–3‑metre waves. Overall rainfall is expected to be below normal except in the northeast, with temperatures slightly above average. The public and mariners are urged to stay updated on weather alerts and possible tropical cyclones.
The Meteorological Department's monthly forecast for October 2026 indicates a transitional season, with variable weather and thunderstorms in upper Thailand, especially the north and northeast, early in the month followed by cooler mornings. The south will see frequent and heavy rain, with thunderstorms covering 60–80% of the area and strong seas producing waves 2–3 metres high. This pattern results from a Chinese high-pressure system extending southward and the monsoon shifting from southwest to northeast, plus a monsoon trough over lower central, eastern and upper southern areas. Additional notes advise central Thailand to prepare for heavy rain on 11–14 October, with Bangkok’s five districts monitoring for rising water. A second warning was issued for volatile weather 4–7 October with very heavy rain. Overall rainfall for the month is expected to be below normal except in the northeast, where it will be near average, while average temperatures will be 0.5–1.0°C above normal. Strong low-pressure areas or tropical cyclones in the lower South China Sea may move toward or across Thailand, bringing widespread heavy rain. The public and mariners are urged to closely follow weather updates and tropical cyclone warnings from the Meteorological Department.
