Thai Railways on High Alert for Northern Floods
Thai Railways has activated emergency protocols across northern operations ahead of forecasted heavy rainfall, with maintenance crews on standby to monitor vulnerable infrastructure and clear drainage systems to prevent flood disruptions.
The State Railway of Thailand is mobilizing resources across northern operations following a severe weather warning from the Meteorological Department about heavy to very heavy rainfall in the North and Northeast regions. The railway has instructed all relevant departments and field staff to maintain round-the-clock emergency readiness, implementing four key measures: increased surveillance of vulnerable points including bridges, embankments, and flood-prone riverbank areas with maintenance crews standing by for immediate repairs; accelerated clearing of drainage channels, culverts, vegetation, and debris along tracks to maintain driver sightlines; full operational checks of signal systems, automatic barriers, and level-crossing warning signs; and close coordination between station managers and local authorities to assess water accumulation and prepare contingency plans. Anant Phothinimdaeng, director-general of the State Railway of Thailand, emphasized that passenger safety is the agency's top priority and that any service disruptions will be addressed promptly with schedule adjustments to minimize passenger impact.
