Thai Sprinter Biew Misses Asian Record by 0.01 Seconds
Thai sprinter Biew Phuripool Bunyasorn won silver in the men's 200 meters at the 2026 Asian Games with 19.88 seconds, equalling the Asian record but falling just 0.01 seconds short of breaking it.
After displaying strong form, Biew Phuripool Bunyasorn claimed the silver medal in the men's 200 meters at the 2026 Asian Games with a time of 19.88 seconds, breaking the Asian Games record and equalling the Asian record set by Xia Zhengjie of China in 2019.
Following the race, Biew expressed slight disappointment that 0.01 seconds faster would have broken the Asian record, but remained delighted to secure the silver medal and match the continental record. He described the final stretch as grueling, requiring mental control and lower body relaxation throughout the run.
"I'm incredibly happy. I did three or four celebration moves today, including some inspired by Matheus Cunha and Usain Bolt. I can't express how happy I am. Thank you to my mother and family for always supporting me, thank you to my two coaches and my master who have trained me since childhood and pushed me to this point. Thank you to Coach Gentry Bradley who pushes me, believes in me, and understands what I can or cannot do. I would like to continue through next year."
"For the next Asian Games, I cannot say how much faster I will be, but I can say I will be stronger, faster than this, and will set a better record."
Biew also revealed his participation in the men's 4x100 meter relay for a third medal attempt, saying: "I still have it in me, but the main challenge is that I have run six full rounds already, which has naturally exhausted my body. I will try not to put pressure on myself and run my best."
