Thai Woman Shares Battle with Rare Disease to Inspire Others
A Thai woman in her mid‑20s describes how meningeal tuberculosis left her paralyzed and drowning in debt, enduring endless surgeries that only delay her decline. Posting in an online support group, she says she shares her story not as a fighter but to encourage others to appreciate their health and not give up. She hopes her experience will motivate people to keep fighting despite hardship.
She finished her studies around late 2022–early 2023 and landed a first job earning 21,000 baht a month, with commissions sometimes pushing her income to 30,000–40,000 baht. Life was good until she contracted meningeal tuberculosis, forcing her to quit work. The infection spread pus throughout her spinal canal, causing narrowing and nerve compression that gradually stole her ability to walk, eventually leaving her paralyzed. Money went to caring for her grandmother and covering surgery costs over two years, draining her savings and ruining her credit. Each operation merely aims to prolong her bedridden state, each one leaving her worse off; initially she could not walk, now both arms and hands are weak, with only her thumbs able to move. While some say congenital disability is harder, she feels those born disabled can adapt better than she, who once had everything but now can use nothing, leaving her devastated and in constant pain even when lying down due to severe neck nerve compression. She does not know how a seventh surgery would be performed. When her brain first swelled from meningeal inflammation, doctors told her she was lucky, with a roughly 50/50 chance of survival; she reflects that perhaps dying then would have been better than enduring this fate. She insists she is not a fighter, merely alive because she has not yet died, and wants others to think, “Wow, this kid is more of a failure than us” or “Her life is worse than ours” so they find motivation to cherish their health and keep going. As long as they have healthy bodies, she urges them not to give up.
