Thailand Advances Songkhla Lake Communities Bid for UNESCO World Heritage Status
Thailand's government approved preliminary assessment documents for Songkhla Lake communities' UNESCO World Heritage bid, with officials rushing to submit the dossier to Paris before the September 15 deadline.
On September 10, Dr. Raveewan Phuridej, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, chaired the second 2025 meeting of the National Committee for World Heritage Convention, acting on instruction from Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsri and Environment Minister Suchati Chomklin. The committee approved preliminary assessment documents for the cultural heritage site "Songkhla and Associated Communities of Songkhla Lake" and tasked the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning with urgently submitting the dossier to the World Heritage Centre to meet the September 15 submission deadline at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The preliminary assessment is a critical step that allows UNESCO advisory organizations to participate and guide the preparation of nomination documents, ensuring they are complete, comprehensive, and ready for formal world heritage designation. The committee also reviewed outcomes from the 48th ordinary session of the World Heritage Committee, including updates to the cultural and natural heritage lists and the tentative list, while monitoring Thailand's ongoing efforts to conserve and manage its heritage sites according to international standards.
