Thailand Delays New Industry Secretary Appointment Pending PM Talks

Thailand's Industry Ministry has delayed appointing a new permanent secretary until Prime Minister Anuthine returns from Australia and New Zealand, with the current secretary's four-year term expiring soon.

Thailand Delays New Industry Secretary Appointment Pending PM Talks
23h ago Khaosod

On August 18, Industry Minister Warawuth Silpa-archa said this week's cabinet meeting would not include a proposal for a new permanent secretary at the Ministry of Industry. The appointment must wait for Prime Minister Anuthine Charnveerakul and Interior Minister to return from their official visit to Australia and New Zealand before further discussions can be held.

When asked whether current Permanent Secretary Nathpol Rangsitpol, whose four-year term is expiring, will remain in his position, Warawuth explained that under civil service law, senior officials serve four-year terms before being transferred. Special cases allowing officials to stay longer require the minister to request cabinet approval, with a maximum of two one-year extensions allowed.

Regarding reports that the outgoing permanent secretary may transfer to the Energy Ministry, Warawuth said the matter requires discussion with the prime minister and other stakeholders. He noted that last week's cabinet submission encountered incomplete documentation issues, forcing postponement of the agenda item.

Asked whether he wants the current permanent secretary to continue or relocate, Warawuth praised the official's competence and knowledge in automotive and industrial matters, but said any decision requires consultation with the prime minister first. He personally believes the secretary deserves advancement after completing four years, and welcomed reports of a potential transfer to the Energy Ministry, which he described as an important portfolio.

Warawuth confirmed he has discussed the matter with the permanent secretary since taking office and sees no objection. He noted that the Energy Ministry was historically part of the Industry Ministry, so the work would remain continuous.

Asked about reports that Energy Minister Eknaht Promphan does not want and will push for an internal candidate for the new permanent secretary position, Warawuth reiterated that cabinet approval is required. He emphasized that as minister, it is his responsibility to nominate a suitable candidate to the cabinet for approval.

When asked whether the new permanent secretary will be an insider or outsider, Warawuth said the decision is still under consideration. He noted that any candidate would technically be an insider, as they would come from within the Industry Ministry. He joked that there are many capable candidates to choose from within the ministry.

Government Minister Dismisses Opposition Corruption Claims

Government spokesman Paradorn Patthanathorn dismissed opposition corruption allegations, arguing the current administration cannot be held accountable for issues originating before it took office in 2025.

Government Minister Dismisses Opposition Corruption Claims
23h ago Khaosod

At 9:40 a.m. on August 18, government spokesman Paradorn Patthanathorn said the opposition is preparing to file a no-confidence motion after the new parliamentary session opened, but it remains unclear whether they will invoke Section 151 or 152 of the constitution. He said the government needs to wait for clarity from the opposition first.

Regarding attempts to use a parliamentary standing committee dispute in the no-confidence debate, Paradorn noted that the current government took office in 2025, the previous Anuthon government in 2024, but the disputed standing committee case originated in 2023. The government therefore cannot be held responsible for it.

Concerning allegations of corruption involving local civil service recruitment examinations, Paradorn said the Interior Ministry raised these issues and they stem from repeated problems dating back to 2019, not from the current administration. When asked whether the government would prepare defenses, he said the administration would wait to study any motion formally submitted before organizing a response.

Police Bust Illegal Pink ID Card Scheme in Bangkok

Police arrested civil servants and brokers in Bangkok for illegally registering over 2,300 foreign children as Thai citizens using pink ID cards in a scheme spanning multiple districts.

Police Bust Illegal Pink ID Card Scheme in Bangkok
1d ago Khaosod

At 6:00 a.m. on August 18, 2025, the Anti-Corruption Commission launched coordinated raids led by Deputy Secretary-General Siripong Sritula, working with the Prime Minister's Office's anti-corruption unit, the Department of Local Administration, and the Royal Thai Police. Officers arrested civil servants and brokers from Din Daeng district office accused of illegally registering foreign nationals, mostly children under 15 years old, for pink ID cards (numbers starting with 7).

The investigation revealed that Din Daeng district office issued over 2,347 pink ID cards numbered with 7 between 2024 and 2025—an unusually high number. Authorities conducted seven search operations across Bangkok and Pathum Thani province. The case emerged following a similar arrest of a sub-district administrator in Wang Noi, Ayutthaya, in March 2025.

Operations targeted three named officials and brokers involved in bringing foreign children aged 5-15 into false household registrations at a single flat. Nearly 200 foreign children were registered at one location, with over 1,366 total names found across 44 rooms at the apartment building, despite each unit measuring only 30-40 square meters. Authorities conducted seven concurrent searches at related locations and residences of civil servants authorized to approve pink ID card issuance. The scheme appears widespread, involving multiple districts, and authorities plan further coordinated investigations involving the Anti-Corruption Commission, Department of Local Administration, Thai police, and Bangkok authorities.

Doctor's Page Mocked for Shaming Miscarriage Patient Online

A doctor's popular Facebook page mocked a pregnant woman experiencing threatened miscarriage after her husband complained about emergency room wait times, sparking harassment of her family that worsened her medical condition.

Doctor's Page Mocked for Shaming Miscarriage Patient Online
1d ago Khaosod

A popular Facebook page run by a doctor has faced backlash for publicly ridiculing a pregnant patient with threatened miscarriage symptoms. Following an earlier case in which the doctor's page posted mockingly about a patient from Khon Kaen province—a patient who later died—the page remains under continuous online criticism for shaming and publicly humiliating patients, leading to harassment campaigns.

The Drama-addict page recently highlighted another case involving a woman who was targeted by the doctor's page. The woman was in early pregnancy and had developed a fever, sore throat, and a bathroom accident that caused abdominal pain and chest discomfort. Fearing miscarriage, her husband took her to the hospital emergency room around 2 a.m. During the wait for examination (which occurred around 9 a.m.), the frustrated husband posted on social media complaining about the long wait. The doctor's page then screenshotted and mocked his post, suggesting it was merely a cold and sarcastically noting he didn't even read the sign indicating it was an emergency ward.

Followers of the doctor's page subsequently swarmed the comments. Some directed harassment toward the woman's family business page, while others posted threats to have the hospital sue her. The woman was later examined and found to have uterine contractions and threatened miscarriage, requiring hospitalization.

Once aware that her husband's post had been publicly mocked on Facebook, the woman attempted to contact the doctor's page multiple times to explain her actual condition—not a simple cold but threatened miscarriage—and to request the post be deleted or corrected. The page read her messages but never responded. It later quietly altered the post content, apparently to avoid liability, while dodging responsibility by claiming the woman had reported vague symptoms herself.

The woman clarified that she had fully disclosed all her symptoms to medical staff in the emergency room and never posted on Facebook about the threatened miscarriage or pain, given that she had recently lost a previous pregnancy and was still grieving. She feared that posting about miscarriage concerns would be like cursing her current pregnancy. Her husband had merely shared a simple frustration about the wait.

The harassment of both her personal Facebook account and family business page, combined with her condition as a high-risk pregnancy, caused her severe stress. Fortunately, the doctors and nurses in the obstetrics and gynecology department recognized she was being cyberbullied and under extreme stress. They offered emotional support, and hospital management called to encourage her. Her threatened miscarriage gradually improved, and her pregnancy continued normally. She has now come forward to share her experience as a warning about the dangers of online shaming.

Thailand's Q2 GDP Growth Slows to 1.9%, Posing Economic Challenge

Thailand's second-quarter GDP growth slowed to 1.9% amid rising energy costs, inflation, and weakening consumer spending, though private investment and exports showed stronger performance.

Thailand's Q2 GDP Growth Slows to 1.9%, Posing Economic Challenge
1d ago Khaosod

Santitarn Sathirathai, Deputy Minister attached to the Finance Ministry, posted on Facebook on August 18 that the National Economic and Social Development Council has released second-quarter GDP data, prompting analysis of what it reveals about Thailand's economy ahead.

The second-quarter GDP expanded 1.9% year-on-year, down from 2.8% in the first quarter and contracting 0.2% seasonally from the previous quarter. Within these figures lie both mounting pressures and notable opportunities.

The pressures reflect a "triple wave" of challenges. The first wave is energy: rising energy prices not only affect cost of living but also strain Thailand's external balance. Imports surged this quarter while trade and current accounts swung back into significant deficit. The impact extends beyond fuel to transport costs, production expenses, and broader price increases.

The second wave is system-wide cost inflation. Consumer inflation jumped from minus 0.5% in the first quarter to plus 2.7%, while producer prices rose 8.3%. This is particularly worrying for small businesses, many of which struggle to pass full costs to customers as consumer purchasing power weakens.

The third wave is purchasing power. Private consumption growth slowed from 3.3% to 1.9%. Consumer confidence fell to 50.3, and auto loans contracted 7.8%, showing Thai consumers are becoming more cautious.

SMEs face special risk. With limited reserves, weak pricing power, and harder access to credit than large firms, many face liquidity crises when revenue slows while costs rise simultaneously. Sound businesses may have to cut staff, reduce investment, or close simply because cash flow cannot keep pace.

This underscores why short-term economic support measures remain necessary—protecting living costs and ensuring credit, guarantees, and debt restructuring reach viable SMEs.

Yet there are also encouraging signs. Private investment surged 13.4%, the highest in over a decade, with machinery and equipment up 16.6% including computers, software, and industrial machinery. Goods exports grew 14.1%, driven by electronics, telecommunications equipment, computer parts, and circuit boards.

This reflects Thailand's gains from new investment waves, supply chain shifts, and growth in digital and AI economies. International reports, including the World Bank's 2026 World Development Report, identify Thailand as one of five developing nations with the highest AI-related export values in 2025, showing Thailand already has an established manufacturing base in this chain.

For Santitarn, the second-quarter GDP figures show clear challenges but are not entirely bleak. The data tells us we must pursue three urgent measures in parallel: short-term economic support, transition management, and tomorrow's investment.

TAT Targets Chinese Travelers With Regional Tourism Strategy

Thailand's Tourism Authority is launching a regional strategy across China targeting high-value travelers through wellness, sports and cultural experiences, with dedicated offices in Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing promoting emerging Thai des

1d ago TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 18 August 2026 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is strengthening its 2026 strategy designed around consumer travel interests across eastern, western and northern China. Led by TAT offices in Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing, this localised approach targets high-value travellers while highlighting fresh travel itineraries and spreading economic benefits to more emerging Thai destinations.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, “Chinese travellers are becoming more diverse in how they choose destinations and experiences. TAT is responding with a more focused regional strategy that matches Thailand’s tourism strengths with the interests of each market. Wellness, sport, culture, communities and emerging destinations are central to this approach, helping us attract quality visitors while spreading tourism value more widely across the country.”

In eastern China, TAT’s Shanghai Office is targeting premium travellers through wellness and experiential tourism. Under “Healing Is the New Luxury”, TAT is working with LANN Space, a Chinese mindfulness and holistic wellness platform, and leading online travel agency Tuniu.com to promote restorative travel experiences in Saraburi and Khao Yai.

The campaign is supported by Key Opinion Leaders, positioning Thailand as a destination for physical, emotional and mental well-being. TAT is also reinforcing the aspirational “Amazing Thailand, The Journey Your Heart Leads” brand through over 2,500 promotional video screenings at five leading cinemas in Shanghai during summer, driving future travel and strengthening Thailand’s image as a quality tourism destination.

In Jiangsu, TAT has extended its reach through a live Nanjing International Television program, presenting experiential tourism and destinations around Rayong and Hua Hin to over five million viewers.

In western China, TAT’s Chengdu Office is focusing on sport tourism and creator-led content. Together with Zx-tour, a Chinese sports travel company specialising in marathon packages including international running trips, TAT organised an “Offline Sharing Session for Amazing Thailand Marathons” in Chengdu to engage fitness enthusiasts from Sichuan and Chongqing. This helped promote marathon and running events in Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Buri Ram, Hua Hin and Songkhla. While TAT also hosted Chinese content creators on a fam trip to Chiang Mai (extended into Chiang Rai) for community experiences, with the initiative supporting future direct flights linking western China to northern Thailand.

In northern China, TAT’s Beijing Office is targeting families for summer holidays while capturing demand in secondary provincial markets. In Changchun, TAT and major tourism partners in Jilin Province staged “Cool Summer Breeze: Long-Lasting Friendship Between Jilin and Thailand” showcasing Thai culture and soft power through Songkran-themed activities, Thai cuisine, handcrafts and contemporary performances.

The event attracted more than 80,000 participants, alongside a seven per cent increase from 2025 in direct airline seat capacity between Jilin Province and Thailand, supporting further travel demand from northeastern China.

Together, the campaigns demonstrate TAT’s targeted approach to China, with wellness and experiential travel prioritised in the east, sport and lifestyle travel in the west, and family travel and Thai culture in the north. Across all three regions, TAT links consumer interests with Thailand’s wider range of destinations and tourism products.

China remains Thailand’s largest international source market, delivering 3,149,889 arrivals from 1 January to 5 August 2026. Backed by the quality-focused “Trusted Thailand” initiative, which reinforces safety, service quality and visitor assurance across the tourism experience, TAT expects Chinese arrivals to exceed five million for 2026, underlining the market’s continuing importance in both visitor volume and expenditure.

TAT continues to strengthen its established Chinese visitor base while expanding high-value segments that drive tourism revenue, regional distribution and long-term competitiveness. The strategy is designed to generate wider benefits for local hotels, restaurants, transport and retail sectors.

Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Dr. Alona Fisher-Kamm concluded an official visit to Surat Thani yesterday, August 17. During her visit, she held talks with senior police officials and provincial leadership to strengthen cooperation, address local concerns, and ensure the safety of Israeli travelers. The ambassador and her delegation met with the Commander of Tourist Police Division 3, Setthasak Yimcharoen, alongside Surat Thani Provincial Police Commander, Suwat Suksi. Discussions centered on visitor security and responsible tourism. Moreover, they focused on fostering stronger ties between tourists and local communities across popular island destinations such as Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, and Koh Tao. Photo via Facebook/ Israel in Thailand The envoy expressed sincere appreciation to local law enforcement for their ongoing assistance and open communication. She emphasised that close coordination remains vital given the large volume of Israeli visitors arriving in the province each year. The security meeting followed an official gathering on August 14 with Surat Thani Governor Jumpot Wannachatsiri and regional agency heads. During the talks, Dr. Fisher-Kamm requested continued care for Israeli nationals residing, running businesses, or traveling in the area. Addressing recent public friction, the ambassador noted that while the vast majority of Israeli visitors are law-abiding, isolated incidents of misconduct do happen, as with travelers from any nation. However, she cautioned that social media narratives often amplify negative incidents, creating misunderstandings and unwarranted feelings of insecurity. Photo via Facebook/ Israel in Thailand The embassy regularly briefs outbound travelers on Thai customs, laws, and cultural etiquette. In addition, the ambassador urged local authorities to contact the embassy directly whenever issues arise to ensure swift resolution. Dr. Fisher-Kamm also highlighted Israel’s five ongoing development initiatives in Thailand, including a high-value agricultural project on Koh Samui. Furthermore, she extended an invitation to Jumpot to attend an official conference in Israel this November. Jumpot affirmed that Surat Thani enforces the law transparently and treats all visitors equally regardless of nationality. He expressed interest in Israel’s high-value farming innovations as a learning model for the province. He also confirmed that provincial authorities stand ready to coordinate closely with the embassy on trade, travel, and security matters.
