Thailand Hosts 86th World Gymnastics Congress in Bangkok
Thailand hosted the 86th World Gymnastics Congress in Bangkok, drawing representatives from over 168 countries. The event featured an opening ceremony, a gala dinner, and cultural performances, with Thailand’s officials welcoming the international delegates. Turkey was announced as the host for the next congress in 2028.
On October 5, Khunying Pattama Leevedtrakul, an IOC member, attended the opening of the 86th World Gymnastics Congress at the Grand Centre Point Hotel Lumpini in Bangkok, as invited by Morinari Watanabe, president of the International Gymnastics Federation. Over 168 countries sent gymnastics leaders to the conference. Khunying Pattama welcomed the global gymnastics delegation, with Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phan-jeerawanakul presiding over the official opening and Navy Lieutenant Sarayut Pattanasakorn, president of the Thai Gymnastics Association, assisting with the welcome.
Later that day, a lavish gala dinner was hosted at the Navy Auditorium to greet the participants, attended by National Olympic Committee Deputy President Ekachai Phakdi Sirivat, Khunying Pattama, Somsak Leevesadtrasakul of the Asian Olympic Council, and other organizers. Navy Lieutenant Sarayut Pattanasakorn thanked all parties, especially those who facilitated visas for delegates facing entry difficulties, ensuring smooth participation. He presented a large flower bouquet to Khunying Pattama and souvenirs to Ekachai Phakdi Sirivat and Somsak Leevesadtrasakul, after which guests enjoyed performances of Thai drums, Thai gymnastics, khon mask dance, and aerial acrobatics.
Sarayut concluded by congratulating Turkey on being selected to host the 87th World Gymnastics Congress in October 2028, beating Italy. Morinari Watanabe praised the Thai Gymnastics Association for its visionary leadership, flawless organization, and the splendid gala dinner that blended gymnastics with Thai culture, earning applause from all delegations. He encouraged continued growth of Thai gymnastics under the current leadership and wished all delegates a safe return home.
