Thailand Launches Financial Data Integration to Combat Online Fraud
Thailand's Finance Ministry is integrating financial data systems across agencies to instantly block suspicious transactions and freeze accounts, closing loopholes exploited by online scammers targeting gaps between disconnected databases.
The Finance Ministry is upgrading scrutiny of suspicious financial transactions and emphasizes that all backend systems must be interconnected using a single standard to block and freeze accounts instantly. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanpraphat revealed this after chairing a meeting of the Connect the Dots subcommittee, which aims to close loopholes exploited by online scammers who target gaps between financial data systems across multiple agencies.
The committee was established by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Interior Minister as its chair to integrate data and track progress in combating cybercrime. Today's meeting approved three major initiatives: first, upgrading identity verification to meet international standards aligned with the Financial Action Task Force and equivalent to financial centers like Singapore and the UK, including KYC and Extended Due Diligence procedures.
Second, establishing a financial transaction data center with anonymized information to help analysts predict criminal behavior and detect transactions below reporting thresholds. Third, creating a national incident reporting system that integrates multiple channels including the 1441 hotline, police stations, and banks, allowing citizens to report fraud through any channel with unified backend processing.
Fourth, implementing instant transaction blocking and asset freezing systems. The committee also assigned Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Lawranan Saengsanit to lead system design within 30 days to ensure unified data standards across all agencies. This will allow police to instantly access information previously requiring written requests to ten separate agencies, enabling faster risk prevention and asset seizure.
