Thailand Orders State Banks to Aid Flood Victims
Thailand's state banks are launching emergency loans and financial relief for flood victims, covering immediate expenses, debt restructuring, and home repairs through multiple government lending institutions.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekachai Nitithanpraphas has announced that the Finance Ministry is coordinating with specialized financial institutions to urgently assist residents and business operators in flood-affected areas. Support covers immediate expenses during the disaster, existing debt burdens, and capital for home repairs or resuming livelihoods.
Planned measures include emergency and rehabilitation loans from the Government Savings Bank, Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, and the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailand. Housing assistance is available through the Government Housing Bank, with debt rescheduling options from multiple state banks including the Islamic Bank of Thailand and the Export-Import Bank of Thailand. Additional relief includes credit insurance support.
The Insurance Commission is also helping flood victims with damaged homes and vehicles. Affected individuals should: check coverage through the LINE @OICCONNECT service, gather damage documentation, report claims immediately when possible, and prepare complete compensation claim documents. The Insurance Commission plans to coordinate further support, including expedited claims processing, vehicle recovery services with Bangkok authorities, faster compensation timelines, and consideration of premium payment deferrals and agent license renewals. Additional information is available through the Insurance Commission hotline 1186.
Finance Minister Ekachai stated: "Public safety comes first. The Finance Ministry's responsibility is to ensure flood victims do not face mounting debts and receive swift, fair protection. Once waters recede, they must have funds to repair homes and vehicles, reopen businesses, and resume livelihoods."
The Finance Ministry will closely monitor relief implementation by financial institutions to ensure rapid assistance reaches those affected.
