NONTHABURI — Three people were killed after a BMW allegedly driven by an intoxicated motorist crashed head-on into a tuk-tuk inside a housing estate in Bang Bua Thong district early Monday, police said.

The crash occurred at about 04:10 near Soi 12 in a residential estate in Sano Loi subdistrict. Police, rescue workers and a duty forensic doctor responded to the scene.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene: 82-year-old Lamai and the tuk-tuk driver, 37-year-old Prathumporn. Another passenger, 77-year-old Phattra, underwent CPR for about 30 minutes but was later pronounced dead at a hospital, bringing the death toll to three.

The tuk-tuk overturned and sustained severe front-end damage, while the black BMW came to rest after crashing into a tree. The 31-year-old BMW driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Relatives said the two elderly women regularly hired the same tuk-tuk to travel to Bang Bua Thong Market to sell goods.

The BMW driver told police he had been driving from the entrance of the housing estate and did not see the tuk-tuk before the collision.

A breathalyser test found his blood alcohol level at 152 mg per 100 ml of blood, more than three times Thailand's legal limit of 50 mg per 100 ml.

Police said preliminary findings indicate the tuk-tuk was emerging from Soi 12 as the BMW approached at high speed, resulting in a violent head-on collision.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to determine the circumstances of the crash. The BMW driver has been taken into custody and will face legal proceedings.

The victims' bodies have been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science for autopsy.

Vendor Denied Poor Card Over Vehicle Data Error
20 Jul Khaosod

A 65-year-old vendor who owns two motorcycles is confused after being denied the state welfare card because he was listed as owning two cars instead. On July 20, 2025, the Finance Ministry released eligibility results for the 2025 state welfare card program, which can be verified through the program website, Pao Tang app, government app, and five participating banks. Those rejected can request a rights review by July 31, 2025, then contact verification units to correct their information by August 16, 2025, before entering a second screening round. Results of the appeal will be announced September 21, 2025, across the same channels, with eligible applicants able to use their benefits starting October 1, 2025. Reporters visited Krung Thai Bank in Chai Nat where more than 30 elderly citizens had lined up since 5 a.m. to request rights reviews, concerned about losing their welfare card benefits. Somchai, 65, a frozen dessert vendor with a sidecar motorcycle, said he previously received the card but was now rejected because the system showed him owning two cars. In reality he has two motorcycles—four wheels total—but the system lists eight wheels, though he has never bought a car and cannot even drive one. He relies on the welfare card money to buy goods for resale and expand his business, so losing it would hit hard during these difficult economic times.

SME Credit Guarantor Posts 129% Jump in First Half

Thailand's SME Credit Guarantor posted a 129% surge in credit guarantee commitments to 44.57 billion baht in the first half of 2025, spurring over 50 billion baht in lending to more than 50,000 small businesses across the country.

SME Credit Guarantor Posts 129% Jump in First Half
20 Jul Khaosod

The Small and Medium Enterprise Credit Guarantee Corporation (SME DBF) reported that credit guarantee commitments in the first six months of 2025 reached 44.57 billion baht, a 129% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This catalyzed over 50.16 billion baht in lending through financial institutions, benefiting more than 50,000 SME operators, sustaining approximately 342,000 jobs, and generating over 219.73 billion baht in economic benefit.

The service, food and beverage, and manufacturing and trade sectors accounted for over 54% of total guarantees. A key driver of growth was the "Quick Big Win" credit guarantee scheme with 50 billion baht in total commitments, which waived guarantee fees for the first three years and charged only 1% annually thereafter, leveraging risk-based pricing to boost lender confidence.

The organization launched the new "Credit Plus" guarantee product with 20 billion baht to capitalize SMEs at all levels, offering coverage from 10,000 baht up to 100 million baht per borrower at a starting fee of just 1.25% annually with terms up to 10 years. It employs the TCG Score credit-scoring system for risk management and is expected to generate approximately 26.9 billion baht in new lending to over 9,000 operators while preserving roughly 194,000 jobs.

Beyond credit support, the organization has restructured debt for over 3,000 claimants totaling 1.58 billion baht and cleared debts for 716 borrowers worth 180 million baht under the "SME DBF Ready to Help" initiative. It is expanding year-round assistance through "SME DBF Ready to Guarantee, Ready to Help" phase two and accelerating digital transformation through the "SME DBF Ready Plus+" initiative, which will develop an API Gateway to connect real-time credit guarantee services with modern financial ecosystems and virtual banking platforms.

Drunk BMW driver crashes, kills 3 in NonthaburiLegacyThree people died when a drunk BMW driver crashed into a tuk tuk in a village in Nonthaburi this morning, July 20. Officers from Bang Bua Thong Police Station and rescuers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation were called to the scene in Chonlada Bang Bua Thong Village on Bang Kluay-Sai Noi Road at about 4am. The collision occurred near Section 12 of the housing estate. Police identified the victims as 82 year old Lamai Autchamakornluck, 77 year old Phat Sae-ngow and 37 year old Prathumporn Prasertkantong. Lamai and Prathumporn were pronounced dead at the scene. Rescue workers performed CPR on Phat for more than 30 minutes, but she later died from her injuries. Photo via KhaoSod Police said the three victims were travelling in a tuk tuk from the village to a nearby market, where Lamai and Phat were due to operate their business. The tuk tuk overturned and sustained significant damage in the collision. The BMW driver, identified as 31 year old Yotsathon Jongphutsiri, remained at the scene and cooperated with police. According to investigators, a breath alcohol test revealed that he had 152 milligrams of alcohol per cent in his system, which is above Thailand’s legal limit of 50 milligrams per cent. Yotsathon told police he did not see the tuk tuk while driving home through the village. Some media outlets reported that the driver had been drinking while watching the FIFA World Cup final before the crash. However, police have not confirmed that information. Photo via KhaoSod Investigators believe speed may have been a factor and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to establish the circumstances of the collision. Police said the final charges will be determined after the investigation is completed. The fatal Nonthaburi BMW crash follows other recent road accidents. On July 4, police in Pattaya investigated a crash involving an SUV driven by a Chinese national that struck several vehicles waiting at traffic lights. Police said the driver refused a breath alcohol test. In April, another BMW crashed into a KFC restaurant in Bangkok, injuring 12 people, including customers, employees and food delivery riders. Although witnesses suspected the driver had been intoxicated, police did not confirm those claims. The story Drunk BMW driver crashes, kills 3 in Nonthaburi as seen on Thaiger News.

Man, 70, Bleeds to Death After Cutting Finger With Machete

A 70-year-old man in Lopburi Province bled to death after accidentally cutting his finger with a machete while trimming vegetation, with authorities concluding shock from blood loss and alcohol consumption caused his death.

Man, 70, Bleeds to Death After Cutting Finger With Machete
20 Jul Khaosod

At 6:30 a.m. on July 20, officers from Tha Hin Police Station in Muang District, Lopburi Province, responded to a report of an unexplained death at a two-story wooden house. Police coordinated with a doctor from Phra Narai Maharaj Hospital and volunteers from a local charity to investigate. The son of the deceased was found grief-stricken waiting for officers, and a trail of blood droplets was discovered from the front door through the bedroom to the bathroom entrance. Officers found the body of Chaiynat, a 70-year-old homeowner, surrounded by scattered blood. A mixed-breed dog named Nokia refused to leave the body or allow anyone to approach until the son, Songphon, 26, confined the animal.

Songphon explained that three people lived in the house: his parents and himself. His mother worked in Ayutthaya Province, while he worked night shifts and had left home around noon the previous day. When he returned at approximately 4:15 a.m., he was shocked to discover large quantities of blood throughout the house and initially suspected his father had been attacked. However, he found a first-aid kit and bloodstained cotton near the refrigerator. His father regularly trimmed vegetation around the house and drank alcohol, but had never quarreled with anyone, suggesting the incident was accidental.

The autopsy revealed a wound consistent with a serrated knife cut at the base of the left index finger, with evidence that the thumb had been pressed to attempt to stop the bleeding. The coroner concluded that due to advanced age, excessive blood loss, and alcohol consumption, the victim likely went into shock and died. Police found the machete in a laundry basket and evidence of tamarind tree trimming, along with blood droplets leading into the house. No signs of struggle or foul play were found. The body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for further investigation into the exact cause of death.

Pathum Thani Provincial Administration (PTAO) is reinforcing its role as a model local government organization in public health, continuing its aggressive flu vaccination campaign for the third consecutive year to build community immunity and sustainably improve residents' well-being. The initiative operates under the slogan "Good Health Starts Here: PTAO Cares About Your Health."

Influenza is a seasonal disease that occurs every year and affects public health broadly. Over the past three years, PTAO has recognized the importance of this issue and implemented proactive policies to secure high-quality vaccines for residents. Annual flu vaccination not only reduces severe illness and hospital admissions but also eases household financial burdens, strengthening the province's primary health care system and advancing it toward becoming a truly safe and healthy city.

PTAO invites at-risk groups, youth, and unvaccinated residents to receive free flu vaccines until July 31, 2025 at the PTAO multipurpose building (near Pathum Thani Market) and all health centers and stations throughout the province. No appointment needed—just bring your ID card. More details are available on the PTAO Facebook page. For inquiries, contact the PTAO Public Health Office at 02-975-8940–8, ext. 126.

Thailand Closes Talks Door as Cambodia Pursues UNCLOS Dispute

Thailand halted negotiations with Cambodia after it escalated their maritime dispute to UNCLOS arbitration instead of pursuing bilateral talks, with Thai officials also concerned about Cambodia's public announcements of Chinese weapons deli

Thailand Closes Talks Door as Cambodia Pursues UNCLOS Dispute
20 Jul Khaosod

Thailand has closed the door on negotiations with Cambodia after Cambodia chose to bring their maritime dispute to the UNCLOS mechanism, making progress on land border talks impossible. Thai officials expressed concern about Cambodia's publicizing of Chinese tank deliveries during this delicate period, and urged China to consider the impact of supplying weapons to Cambodia.

On July 20, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Siwarak Phuangkaetkaew stated that China has offered to facilitate Thai-Cambodian talks, but communication channels between the two countries remain limited. Although Thailand proposed after the leaders' meeting in Cebu during the ASEAN summit that bilateral negotiations be used to build mutual trust on all issues, Cambodia instead moved forward with compulsory arbitration proceedings on maritime borders rather than negotiating bilaterally first.

Siwarak emphasized that UNCLOS offers multiple mechanisms, such as voluntary mediation, before proceeding to binding arbitration. "Since Cambodia is not ready to discuss as agreed in Cebu, negotiations on land borders have become difficult," he said. "This closes the door on opportunities to discuss land and maritime border issues. The best outcome would be if China maintains its goodwill and neutrality, and encourages Cambodia to honor the Cebu agreement and recognize the importance of impartiality."

Siwarak also expressed concern that Cambodia's publicizing of Chinese tank deliveries at this sensitive moment—when the ceasefire remains fragile—is unhelpful. He urged China to consider this concern, noting that while gray-zone Chinese businesses represent only a small portion of total Chinese investment, recent incidents involving Chinese nationals obtaining Thai nationality through fraudulent newborn registrations damage public perception and warrant Beijing's attention.

20 Jul Khaosod

Deputy Police Commissioner Samran Nualma directed the operation "Dismantling the Foreign Nominee Network Phase 5" in Chiang Mai province, with more than 250 personnel from Region 5 Police, Chiang Mai Provincial Police, and officials from the Business Development Department and Department of Land. The operation resulted in 18 search warrants across 31 cases involving assets worth 633 million baht.

Police screened over 33,144 registered companies in Chiang Mai and identified 4,741 with foreign shareholders, of which 1,591 were suspected nominees. This narrowed to 31 target companies: 16 suspected of using Thai nationals as nominee shareholders and 15 foreigners illegally holding land stakes comprising 29 plots totaling over 20 rai valued at approximately 633 million baht. Authorities issued arrest warrants for 22 foreign nationals across multiple nationalities including Myanmar (7), India (3), China (9), Britain (1), and Thai nationals (2), successfully apprehending 5 suspects—two Indians and three Myanmar nationals.

A significant case involved Village G.12 in Sariphi District where four companies were found using Thai nominees. One suspect, a Thai national named R., was imprisoned but continued to appear as shareholder and director in seven companies registered after his conviction, contradicting legitimate business participation. Another suspect, Thai national S., claimed ignorance of shareholding and receiving only 7,000 baht per transaction from a real estate agent for signing documents. A third suspect, Thai national C., denied knowledge of any shareholding involvement.
