A violent altercation erupted on the motorway when a tour bus driver was repeatedly punched by another bus operator following a minor collision and cutting-off incident. Video footage shared on social media shows the driver of one tour company launching a sustained assault on the driver of a competing bus company who was seated at the wheel, prompting other staff on board to intervene and separate the two men.

According to the injured driver, he had signaled to change lanes when the other driver became enraged, challenged him to fight, and called a colleague to join in the attack. The second employee then rushed onto the bus and beat the driver until he was severely injured. The incident stemmed from the second bus cutting in front of a convoy of tour buses that were traveling together with an escort vehicle leading the group. The injured driver and his company are currently coordinating with authorities to provide additional details, while the tour company believed responsible for the assault has not yet been reached for comment as of July 22, 2025.

Bangkok Governor Orders Officials Out Over Corruption Probe
22 Jul Khaosod

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has ordered district officials implicated in the "Pho Thip-Mae Thip" case out of office, vowing to intensify anti-corruption efforts. On July 22, 2569, at Bangkok City Hall 2 in Din Daeng, Sittipunt briefed the media on developments in the case following the establishment of a fact-finding committee. He confirmed that officials allegedly involved have been ordered to leave office, stressing the need for rigorous adherence to proper procedures while awaiting results from the central fact-finding commission, which is being overseen by Bangkok's Deputy Governor.

Sittipunt explained that Bangkok has progressively tightened enforcement procedures. Initially, he noted, there was laxity among district officials who overly trusted hospitals. The governor said investigators have now identified patterns in certain districts where queue card systems prevent service from specific officials, while other districts route transactions through single staff members—a potential red flag for ongoing corruption. He emphasized the need for thorough, serious investigations.

Regarding the 2569 Outstanding Anti-Corruption Individual Award from the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Sittipunt stated that while the award was determined before his current term ended, it was not announced until he took office. He clarified that the award is not a personal honor but belongs to all Bangkok residents and reflects the collective commitment of all city officials and employees working earnestly against corruption and graft. "The award is encouraging, but there is more important work ahead," Sittipunt said. "I believe we are on the right path, but we must work much harder."

22 Jul Khaosod

Thailand's volleyball federation announced it will dispatch its strongest contingent of male and female athletes in both indoor and beach volleyball to the 20th Asian Games in Japan, with full backing from Thailand's national sports authority (TTSF) as it pursues a target of winning at least two medals. The Thai national volleyball teams—men's and women's squads in both indoor and beach categories—will compete at the 20th Asian Games between September 19 and October 4, 2026, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Sompon Chai Bangyaeng, president of the Volleyball Association of Thailand, disclosed that the federation has been continuously preparing national team athletes, particularly the women's indoor volleyball team, which trains at facilities within Thailand's sports science center. The team has been competing regularly in international tournaments, recently finishing the Nations League 2026, and will next compete in the first leg of the CVL Cup 2026 on July 31–August 2, 2026, in Hanoi, Vietnam, followed by the second leg on August 7–9, 2026, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. These contests precede the Asian Championship on August 21–30, 2026, in Tianjin, China—whose champion earns a berth at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics—before the Asian Games itself. Sompon stated that the federation will send its best athletes to the Asian Games across all four volleyball categories and has set a minimum target of two medals, with particular hopes for the women's indoor team to equal or exceed the bronze medal won at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. He thanked Thailand's sports authority for providing training facilities, sports science support, and sports psychologists to ready the team for the Games.

22 Jul Khaosod

Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek addressed concerns about Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing's official visit to Thailand in early August on July 22 at Government House. She explained that Thailand is gradually encouraging Myanmar to play a greater role in ASEAN while advancing efforts to help build peace in Myanmar, noting that stability there benefits Thai border communities and the two nations are interconnected.

When asked about discussion topics, Ratchada said all issues would be covered, including peace, drug trafficking, scammers, environmental concerns, and river pollution affecting both countries. She noted that Myanmar's Foreign Minister recently met with the Prime Minister and acknowledged problems stemming from Myanmar that impact Thailand, while expressing readiness to assist. Myanmar has also requested academic cooperation on burning and pollution issues.

Regarding concerns about the government's image in hosting a leader viewed negatively by some, Ratchada said the government was not worried, explaining that neighboring countries must live together and that Thais would benefit if peace and positive developments occur in Myanmar. She emphasized that cooperation rather than isolation is necessary. Min Aung Hlaing's visit is scheduled to coincide with the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok in early August.

Police Mediate Fare Dispute Between Indian Tourist and Chiang Mai Driver

An Indian tourist and a ride-hailing driver in Chiang Mai resolved a fare dispute with police mediation on July 19, 2026, after a miscommunication over pricing sparked an argument. The tourist believed a discounted in-app fare of 280 baht covered her entire journey to Mae Rim district and then to Arcade Bus Terminal, while the driver insisted the discount applied only to the outbound trip and the total should be 450 baht. Officer Rajahtana Sriphan stepped in to mediate, attributing the conflict to language barriers and unclear service expectations rather than dishonest intent. After discussion, the driver agreed to accept 280 baht to resolve the matter, and a sympathetic bystander even offered the driver additional money. Rajahtana later posted on Facebook that the incident underscored how disputes between service providers and tourists often stem from miscommunication rather than deliberate wrongdoing, and urged both parties to clarify details before journeys begin. The case drew significant online discussion, though the ride-hailing company has not commented.

An Australian tourist died after drowning in the swimming pool of a luxury villa in Phuket on July 21, 2026, according to police. Authorities are investigating the circumstances.

At around 20:00 on July 21, Pol. Lt. Kriengkrai Daokrajai, a deputy investigation inspector at Thalang Police Station, received a report from Thalang Hospital that a foreign tourist had died. The victim was identified as Mrs. Haiyan Hong, 45, an Australian national.

The incident was reported to Pol. Col. Nikorn Chuthong, superintendent of Thalang Police Station, before investigators and a doctor examined the case. Police determined that the woman had drowned in the swimming pool at Villa No. 26 at The Cape Yamu in Pa Khlok subdistrict, Thalang district, Phuket.

According to her husband, Mr. Yaxi, the couple and 12 relatives had checked into the villa on July 20 and planned to stay until July 25. At around 16:00 on July 21, they rented jet skis and traveled to Naka Island before returning to the villa at 17:15. They then swam in the villa's pool, which is approximately 3 metres deep, along with about eight relatives.

During the swim, relatives noticed Mrs. Hong submerged in the pool. They pulled her from the water, performed CPR, and called emergency medical services. She was taken to Thalang Hospital, where doctors attempted to save her life but she was pronounced dead.

A preliminary examination by investigators and doctors at Thalang Hospital determined that the cause of death was drowning. The body remains at the hospital pending a detailed autopsy. Police will question relatives who were present, examine CCTV footage, and notify the Australian Embassy as part of the ongoing investigation.

22 Jul Khaosod

Prime Minister Anuthin Charnvirakul announced the Green Thailand vision on July 22, 2025, at the Nong Nooch International Convention Center in Chachoengsao, declaring that green economy would serve as the foundation for long-term growth. Speaking at the inaugural Green Bridge Forum organized by the Office of the Auditor General (OAG), with supreme audit representatives from numerous countries in attendance, the prime minister expressed satisfaction that Thailand is hosting the first Green Bridge Forum and commended the OAG for initiating this international cooperation platform, reflecting Thailand's role in advancing environmental governance and sustainable development.

The prime minister emphasized that all nations currently face the shared challenge of achieving economic growth while protecting the environment, noting that the green transition represents a major global economic transformation. Countries that adapt efficiently will attract investment, boost competitiveness, strengthen energy security, and enhance resilience to future crises.

Anuthin proclaimed the Green Thailand vision, championing green economy as the foundation for sustainable development. He affirmed that Thailand adheres to principles of simultaneous economic development and environmental conservation, viewing sustainability not as a limitation on growth but as a crucial foundation for long-term prosperity. The government will advance a strong, environmentally friendly, innovative, and resilient economy through clean energy investment, modern infrastructure, future industries, responsible resource management, and innovation that boosts productivity while reducing environmental impact.

The prime minister emphasized that transitioning to a green economy requires strong governance, efficient budget use, measurable policy implementation, and transparency and accountability. He noted that the OAG plays a critical role in evaluating government policy performance, supporting evidence-based policymaking, ensuring transparency, and building public and investor confidence.

Anuthin stated that in an interconnected world, trust is essential capital for development as it promotes investment, international cooperation, and long-term structural reform, with independent audit organizations playing a vital role in building such confidence. He described the Green Bridge concept as a bridge connecting policy to practice, innovation to responsibility, economic growth to environmental care, and each nation's priorities to global cooperation.

The prime minister reiterated that no country can address climate change alone and that Thailand is ready to collaborate with the global community, playing an active role in INTOSAI's Working Group on Environmental Auditing to promote environmental governance.

Deputy Prime Minister Yossakorn Wongswasdi led a Thai government delegation to Seoul on July 22, 2569, for the Thailand-Korea Business Forum focused on biohealth, medtech, wellness, and future food sectors. The delegation, which included senior officials from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, aimed to attract investment and establish international innovation networks.

The collaboration framework encompasses four dimensions: establishing a Korea-Thai Joint Incubator/Accelerator with the National Innovation Agency (NIA), opening investment opportunities in Thai startups and joint ventures, conducting co-research with BOI incentives, and using Thailand as a technology localization hub to access ASEAN markets. The forum received strong response, with multiple South Korean companies expressing serious interest in investing in Thailand. Deputy PM Faces Pressure Over Local Exam Fraud Scandal
22 Jul Khaosod

At a parliamentary session on July 22, 2569, Rangsimanth Rom, a list-MP from the Pheu Thai Party and chair of the House committee on law, justice and human rights, addressed the recruitment exam controversy. He criticized the oversight terms of reference as inadequate, noting that data stored on flash drives lacked encryption, making it vulnerable to alteration and fraud. He pointed out that while Burapha University was initially set to oversee the exams, a sudden contract switch to Srinakharinwirot University occurred following intervention by the Civil Service Commission, with Prime Minister Anutin reportedly cited in the decision.

Rom stated that the list announcement by the civil service panel lacked proper verification, allowing thousands of unqualified candidates to be hired. He rejected claims of negligence, arguing the scale of the fraud—involving possible embezzlement worth hundreds of millions of baht—suggested deliberate misconduct. He called on the Anti-Money Laundering Office to freeze financial trails and asked whether additional charges such as malfeasance could be considered alongside corruption allegations.

Rom noted that Deputy PM Pakorn Nilprapad, the legal advisor, was invited to discuss the matter but cooperation remained uncertain. The committee has also engaged other agencies including the National Anti-Corruption Commission. The controversy centers on the removal of approximately 5,000 names from the hiring list, which remains contentious.
