Thailand to Learn UNCLOS Conciliation Panel Chair on August 14
11 Aug Khaosod

At a government house briefing on August 11, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihsaket Poungketkeaw provided an update on the selection of a chairman for the compulsory conciliation panel under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). One chairman will be selected on August 14 from a list of approximately ten qualified candidates. Thailand and Cambodia each reviewed the candidates and submitted their preferred names back to the UN; the final selection will be made from those jointly approved nominations.

The first conciliation committee meeting is scheduled for September, with venue options including offices of maritime law in multiple zones: The Hague in the Netherlands and Paris in France for the European zone, and Singapore and Vietnam for Asia. The UN provided candidates from European, Asian, and Latin American regions selected based on qualifications.

Regarding Thailand's response to the human rights report by Tom Andrews on the Thai-Cambodian border, Sihsaket said Thailand has submitted rebuttals to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The report will next be considered by UNHRC, where Thailand will use the forum to clarify its position and address concerns. When asked whether the report would disadvantage Thailand internationally, Sihsaket said no, noting that such reports generate diverse opinions among countries, and he is confident many nations will recognize that Thailand's conduct falls within appropriate bounds.

Global Ocean Temperatures Hit Record High in July
11 Aug Khaosod

The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported on August 11 that global oceans reached record surface temperatures in July 2026, partly driven by El Niño conditions in the Pacific. Between 60°N and 60°S latitude, average sea surface temperatures hit 20.96°C, exceeding the previous high of 20.89°C recorded in 2023. July also ranks as the second-hottest July on record globally, running 1.47°C above pre-industrial averages.

Europe experienced historic ocean warming along Atlantic coastlines and the western Mediterranean, triggering intense and widespread marine heat waves. Tropical Pacific waters remain exceptionally warm during the ongoing El Niño and are expected to intensify over the coming months. Warming oceans drive sea level rise—thermal expansion alone accounts for roughly one-third of observed increases—threatening low-lying coasts and island nations.

Warmer seas intensify and prolong marine heat waves, triggering widespread coral bleaching and destroying seaweed beds and fisheries. The warming also increases heat and moisture evaporation into the atmosphere, fueling more severe tropical storms with heavier rainfall.

MMA Leader Mourns Nonthaburi Official Shot Dead
11 Aug Khaosod

Sirichet Poonthipayananth, president of the Thai Mixed Martial Arts Association (TAMMA), has posted a tribute to Pol. Col. Thongchai Yenpraserit, governor of Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization, who was fatally shot by Chalot Liewpraing, a former Nonthaburi MP, and later died at Phra Nang Klao Hospital. Sirichet expressed deep sorrow over Thongchai's passing, describing him as an essential figure for Thai MMA and combat sports. Throughout TAMMA's journey, Sirichet said, there were many critical moments when Thongchai's support, trust, and assistance proved indispensable—particularly when Thailand hosted the Southeast Asian Games and MMA was among the sports requiring coordinated promotion and successful competition organization. Without Thongchai's leadership, Sirichet noted, those difficult and stressful efforts would not have succeeded. Thongchai was not merely a sponsor but a knowledgeable leader who understood the fighting sports industry, respected his colleagues, and recognized the importance of building a strong foundation for Thai MMA. Sirichet expressed particular sadness that just days before, they had discussed youth development and the future of Thai fighting sports, not realizing that conversation would be one of their last. He pledged that TAMMA will remember Thongchai as a pivotal figure in the history of Thai MMA, and offered condolences to his family and all who respected him, hoping that the legacy he created throughout his life will benefit his spirit in the afterlife. Sirichet concluded by noting that although some people leave the sport, the foundations they build remain within it forever.

Transport Minister Denies Quota in Deputy Secretary Appointment
11 Aug Khaosod

On August 11, 2025, at Government House, Deputy Prime Minister Phipat Ratchakitprakarn and Minister of Transport addressed the appointment of Piyapong Jiwatkulpaisal, director-general of the Department of Highways, to the position of permanent secretary of the Transport Ministry. Phipat stated that ministry projects will continue uninterrupted since Piyapong already holds his current position and can smoothly transition into the new role.

Phipat emphasized that the appointment was based on merit and a recommendation from the current permanent secretary, Chayathorn Phromsor, not political quotas. He noted that Piyapong has advanced through the ranks on his own abilities and performed well under previous transport ministers. When asked about the vacant director-general position, Phipat said the ministry will conduct a competitive selection process with public announcement and examination, expecting 14 to 18 applicants screened down to three finalists.

Phipat highlighted Piyapong's suitability for the permanent secretary role, describing him as knowledgeable and experienced. He explained that since the Department of Highways manages the ministry's largest construction budget, appointing someone from that background provides a comprehensive view of all transport operations—railways, air, and maritime—which require integrated management. Phipat added that the ministry is already accelerating all projects, with ongoing development supported by committed budgets and annual allocations.

Dead Officer's Friend Reveals 11 Million Baht Debt Sparked Fatal Shooting

A close friend revealed that an 11 million baht debt dispute over past campaign expenses sparked the fatal shooting of Nonthaburi's PAO chairman by former MP Chalerm Rewyrang at the organization's office.

Dead Officer's Friend Reveals 11 Million Baht Debt Sparked Fatal Shooting
11 Aug Khaosod

A close friend of Pol. Col. Thongchai Yenpresoet, Nonthaburi's Provincial Administrative Organization chairman who was fatally shot, has opened up about the 11 million baht debt dispute that allegedly triggered the attack by former Nonthaburi MP Chalerm Rewyrang at the organization's office.

On August 11, 2026, friends gathered at the Police Hospital's Institute of Forensic Medicine to pay respects. Among them was Chaiyawat Yamnark, a provincial administrative councilor from Bang Bua Thong, who revealed details about the disputed funds. He suggested the debt likely originated from campaign expenses during a former legislative election when multiple candidates, including Norng Chantandit, were running. The 11 million baht apparently came from friends pooling resources to help with campaign costs, rather than a direct loan.

When asked if the money had previously been demanded, Chaiyawat stated he had never witnessed such requests until about a month before the incident, when Chalerm approached him to mediate. Chaiyawat declined, viewing it as a private matter between the two men and lacking details about the dispute. He recommended both parties talk things through calmly as acquaintances. Chaiyawat insisted he never saw serious conflict between them or any indication that violence would occur, and noted the money issue had never been aggressively pursued before.

Police Panel Rules Shooting Not Political, Premier Rebukes Police Chief

A police panel ruled that a shooting involving a former MP was a personal dispute, not politically motivated, as the Prime Minister reprimanded the police chief for mishandling the suspect's arrest.

Police Panel Rules Shooting Not Political, Premier Rebukes Police Chief
11 Aug Khaosod

On August 11, Air Chief Marshal Abhichai Kaewkosal, a Phetchaburi MP and vice chair of the parliamentary police committee, discussed recent shooting incidents, saying the committee has received orders from Prime Minister Anuthim Charnweerakul and Interior Minister to enforce stricter measures. The committee is working with the Department of Local Administration to draft new laws and regulations for gun owners. Regarding Cholaklong Riaowraeng, a former Nonthaburi MP, who shot a Nonthaburi provincial administrative organization chairman, Abhichai acknowledged criticism of police for failing to handcuff the suspect and allowing him to smoke during arrest. He confirmed that the Prime Minister directly called the police chief to reprimand him over the incident shown in media footage. Abhichai said the lapse represented a need for improvement by both police and local authorities. When asked whether the incident could be tied to politics, Abhichai stated that based on Cholaklong's public statements, the shooting appeared to be a personal matter unrelated to political issues. He noted that Cholaklong and the provincial chairman had been close like siblings. "I dare say this is not about politics," Abhichai said. "In today's era, competition happens within proper frameworks—we no longer resort to violence."

Thai SME Federation Revives Provincial Public-Private Councils

The Thai SME Federation is pushing to revive local public-private partnership committees to boost economic growth and tourism in 50 secondary cities, backed by multibillion-baht investment and an e-commerce platform for small businesses.

Thai SME Federation Revives Provincial Public-Private Councils
11 Aug Khaosod

The Thai SME Federation is proposing to revive provincial public-private partnership committees as a mechanism to connect government agencies, private businesses, and entrepreneurs at the local level to stimulate grassroots economic growth and advance tourism development in 50 secondary cities with multibillion-baht investment. Federation chairman Noppapong Thirawon disclosed the proposal after attending a meeting of the Trade and Service subcommittee, presided over by Deputy Prime Minister Supachee Sutthiraphan and Commerce Minister. The chairman stated that the meeting offered a crucial opportunity for public and private sectors and MSME networks to exchange proposals to drive Thailand's economy forward.

The federation urged the revitalization of provincial public-private committees to serve as a bridge linking government, private sector, and local entrepreneurs, believing this would enable problem-solving and economic development better aligned with each province's capabilities. The federation also proposed developing man-made tourist attractions in 50 secondary cities, allocating 200 million baht per province, with each provincial committee tasked to propose suitable attractions to generate new economic activity, distribute income to communities, and create opportunities for small business operators throughout the value chain.

Another key proposal involves supporting e-commerce for Thai entrepreneurs to expand marketing channels for MSMEs. The federation is preparing to launch an 'SME Proud' platform to connect entrepreneurs with markets and business opportunities, aiming to create careers, jobs, and income on a broader scale. "Thai SMEs don't just need relief measures—they need mechanisms that allow entrepreneurs to grow on their own," Noppapong stated. "Linking the strength of government, private sector, and MSME networks is the heart of driving Thailand's economy forward together."

Doctor Lists 7 Inflammatory Foods Linked to Cancer Risk

A doctor at Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital identifies seven inflammatory foods—including processed meat, fried foods, sugary drinks, refined carbs, and alcohol—that increase cancer risk through chronic inflammation when consumed regularly. The

Doctor Lists 7 Inflammatory Foods Linked to Cancer Risk
11 Aug Khaosod

Dr. Jed Bunyavongvirojn, deputy director of primary care at Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, has identified seven inflammatory foods that increase cancer risk when eaten regularly. While most people associate inflammation with fever, swelling, and pain, the body can experience silent inflammation—especially with obesity, insulin resistance, high blood sugar, fatty liver disease, smoking, alcohol consumption, or regular consumption of certain foods. Chronic inflammation is linked to certain cancers because it increases oxidative stress, forcing cells to repair themselves repeatedly and creating an environment conducive to cellular abnormalities.

The doctor emphasizes this is not about a single fried meal causing cancer, but rather the cumulative effect of frequency, quantity, and duration of consumption.

**The Seven Inflammatory Food Groups:**

**1. Processed Meat** – the strongest evidence linking to cancer risk Sausages, bacon, ham, cured meats, and smoked meats contain nitrites, nitrates, smoking compounds, and heat-processing chemicals. The clearest link is to colorectal cancer. Rather than eliminating these entirely, reduce frequency—swap daily bacon and sausage for eggs, fish, tofu, or minimally processed fresh meat.

**2. Fried Foods and Trans Fats** – accelerate metabolic dysfunction Fried chicken, french fries, fried dough, donuts, and deep-fried items are high-calorie, easy to overconsume, and readily increase weight and belly fat. When combined with trans fats or low-quality oils, they worsen blood lipids and inflammation. The real concern is eating fried foods so often that they trigger obesity, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and elevated triglycerides—all promoting low-grade inflammation. Occasional fried foods are not a major problem, but if the fryer knows your face better than your family, it's excessive.

**3. Sugary Drinks and High-Sugar Beverages** – not just about blood sugar spikes Soft drinks, bubble tea, sweet coffee, juice with added sugar, and energy drinks are liquid calories absorbed rapidly. Frequent consumption causes excess sugar and fructose to increase liver fat production, raise triglycerides, increase belly fat, and cause insulin resistance. When metabolism becomes dysregulated, low-grade inflammation follows. This is why the doctor recommends cutting sugary drinks first when patients want to lose belly fat, reduce blood sugar, or manage fatty liver disease.

**4. Refined Carbohydrates and High-Sugar Sweets** White bread, cake, cookies, pastries, and sweet cereals spike blood sugar quickly, especially when eaten alone and in large quantities. This forces the body to produce more insulin repeatedly, and in those already insulin-resistant, control becomes harder. Carbohydrates are not the villain, but choose carbs with more fiber—brown rice, oats, legumes, whole grains—and pair them with protein and vegetables.

**5. Alcohol** – directly linked to cancer risk Alcohol is associated with cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, breast, and colon, both through inflammation mechanisms and direct carcinogenic pathways.

Content creators and fans from across Thailand converged on Samoedet District in Kalasin province on August 11, 2025, to pay final respects to Haloon Solo, whose real name was Bowortthat Pengsuk. The popular YouTuber and backpacker died while traveling in Georgia. Mourners began arriving early in the day, with family and neighbors providing warm hospitality to those coming to pay their respects.

At 11 a.m., family members invited four Buddhist monks to perform merit-making ceremonies and offer food donations. The family then conducted a traditional funeral blessing, with monks chanting protective verses before the body was moved nearly one kilometer to Rangsee Chachwal Temple, where the cremation ceremony was held.

Nangasadit Kailthep, a YouTuber and fan from Udon Thani province, explained that she followed Haloon's journey after her son told her about a man who traveled the world starting with only 300 baht. She became inspired to start her own YouTube channel after watching his content, and when she learned of his death, she made the journey to pay her respects and say goodbye to her idol.

Nangsukannya Khajorveeratham, a fan from Ko Lanta in Narathiwat, traveled over 1,700 kilometers to attend the ceremony. Despite having watched only two of Haloon's videos, she was deeply impressed by his innovative content creation style and his determination to succeed despite limited resources. She said the round-trip journey exceeded 3,600 kilometers, but she came out of love and admiration, and to see the birthplace that shaped such an inspiring young person. After the funeral blessing, officials prepared to transport the body to the temple for the cremation ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m.

Former Staff File Assault Complaints Against Influencer Wu Jun
11 Aug Khaosod

On August 11, 2025, at the Central Investigation Police Bureau, Eakaphop Lueangseritr, founder of the "Sai Mai Tong Rawt" support page, led a group of victims in filing a complaint against Wu Jun, an influencer and streamer with over 10 million followers, for physical assault, indecent conduct, and workplace intimidation. The complaint followed the conclusion of a broadcast program on August 10. Eakaphop stated that four victims filed complaints today, with more expected to come later. Some victims who experienced incidents long ago fear the statute of limitations may have expired, so investigators will rely on witness testimony. Investigators are also examining whether the influencer employed minors.

Hat, 24, a former team member, said they came to seek justice and hope this case serves as a lesson that celebrities with large followings, particularly among children, must be role models rather than abuse their power. As an employee who suffered physical abuse, he views such behavior as highly inappropriate and hopes for justice.

Ei, 19, another former team member, stated she has avoided watching his content since the incidents, as her mental state cannot handle it. Regarding his denial through videos, she noted he would know best whether he committed these acts. She urged him to reflect carefully on his actions.
