Police Chief Acknowledges PM's Complaint Over Suspect Smoking
Police acknowledge PM's criticism over a murder suspect smoking without restraints during interrogation at a Bangkok police station, with a fact-finding committee now investigating the conduct violation.
On August 11, 2025, National Police Chief General Kittarat Pandaraj revealed details about the case of Chalerm Riawyaeng, a former Nonthaburi MP and murder suspect in the shooting death of Thoengchai Yenpraserit, chairman of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization. Video footage showed Chalerm smoking during interrogation at Rattanadhimaison Police Station while not restrained with handcuffs. The Prime Minister called to criticize police conduct regarding press briefings, use of restraint equipment, and smoking during suspect detention.
General Kittarat stated he accepts the PM's directive and will implement it. He has ordered Deputy National Police Chief General Itthiphon Achariyapraset to establish a fact-finding committee, with results expected soon. He noted such regulations have existed for many administrations, dating back to former National Police Commander Kovit Wattanaj, and even First Region Police Commander General Watthana Yicheen confirmed there is no discomfort as everything must follow the law and procedures. If violations of Section 157 are found, they must be carefully investigated.
The PM also instructed on weapons search measures and checkpoint operations, acknowledging these are difficult but require police to use skills, knowledge, and intelligence to prevent weapon carrying and ensure public safety. Regarding reports that the FBI provided leads prompting Thai police to search the home of the Thoengsindr School shooter in Nonthaburi, General Kittarat said he has not yet received reports on this matter. He ordered deputy commissioners General Thana Chuwong and General Thatchai Pitanilabutr to oversee the case to prevent future incidents, emphasizing that there is nothing Thai police cannot accomplish.
