As global climate action and circular economy efforts accelerate, the safe disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) and standardized carbon reduction accounting have become critical levers for nations to achieve ESG goals and carbon neutrality. Thailand's leading digital infrastructure service provider AIS today announced the official launch of Thailand's first "E-Waste Calculator Platform" in collaboration with the Pollution Control Department (PCD) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO). The platform establishes Thailand's first unified accounting system compliant with international standards, designed to help organizations systematically collect data, monitor project progress, and precisely evaluate environmental effectiveness, providing solid data support for green sustainable development in Thailand and the ASEAN region.
With Thailand generating approximately 700,000 tons of e-waste annually and a formal recycling rate below 1%, the platform fills a critical gap in national e-waste data quantification and macro-level decision-making, marking a key step toward positioning Thailand as a regional benchmark for sustainable e-waste management in ASEAN.
Digital Governance: From Invisible Environmental Action to Measurable Carbon Reduction Reports The "E-Waste Calculator Platform" addresses the longstanding pain points of fragmented e-waste recycling data and invisible results. Through the official link, public and private organizations can input recycled e-waste types and quantities online. The system automatically calculates total waste volume based on established standards and accurately estimates corresponding greenhouse gas reductions, generating standardized reports downloadable in PDF and Excel formats with one click. These reports help enterprises and institutions monitor performance in real-time, optimize management plans, and directly apply to ESG and sustainability reporting. Aggregated nationwide data will provide strong evidence for the Thai government to formulate more scientific environmental policies and circular economy planning.
Data shows that since launching the "Thais Say No to E-Waste" initiative in 2019, AIS has built a vast network of over 280 partner organizations and more than 3,200 collection points, cumulatively recycling 1,301,912 items (total weight 288,346.74 kg), equivalent to reducing 130,700 kg of CO2 equivalent emissions. This tripartite collaboration deeply integrates AIS's technology network, PCD's policy and regulatory expertise, and TGO's authoritative reduction algorithms, constructing a new paradigm of data-driven government-enterprise collaborative governance.
Leadership Statements and Cross-Sector Collaboration Prasert Sirinapaporn, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, stated: "The Ministry places high importance on improving Thailand's e-waste management system, from collection and sorting to safe recycling. We are advancing the draft Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Management Act based on the 'Extended Producer Responsibility' (EPR) principle while strongly encouraging voluntary private sector cooperation. The 'Thais Say No to E-Waste' initiative is a successful example of government-enterprise collaboration. By extending cooperation to local administrative organizations and grassroots communities, we have successfully transformed national policy into community action, promoting resource recycling and effectively reducing pollution."
Kantima Lerlertyuttitham, AIS Deputy CEO and Chief Corporate Officer, said: "At AIS, we firmly believe building a sustainable world requires collective effort from all society. Through our 'Thoughtful Mission' corporate mission, we are committed not only to recycling e-waste but also to demonstrating tangible environmental outcomes through reliable data and unified measurement standards. AIS contributed its technological capabilities to build this calculator platform, helping organizations systematically evaluate their environmental contributions, turning environmental intent into measurable, substantive action."
Dr. Surin Worakijthamrong, Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, noted: "The core challenge in e-waste governance lies in limited end-point collection and formal processing capacity, causing discarded products to mix with general waste or undergo improper dismantling, creating hazardous substance pollution. PCD, together with AIS and TGO, is implementing a waste mobile phone and accessory recycling management project to establish standardized recycling channels meeting technical and environmental standards. Through the 'E-Waste Calculator Platform' connecting data, PCD will precisely track recycling volumes and processing flows, optimize policy implementation, and enhance nationwide recycling efficiency."
Narkorn Takkavirapat, Executive Director of the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization, stated: "Managing e-waste not only reduces waste but also recovers critical raw materials and lowers carbon emissions from new material production. TGO has collaborated with AIS to develop Thailand's first calculation methodology for waste mobile phone recycling emission reductions based on the Low Emission Support Scheme (LESS), ensuring transparent, objective, and traceable assessment results. In the future, TGO plans to develop T-VER carbon credit project methodologies, providing stronger economic incentives for society-wide participation in e-waste governance."
Call to Action and ASEAN Vision AIS formally calls on Thai enterprises, government agencies, and social organizations to actively connect to and use the "E-Waste Calculator Platform," transforming daily e-waste recycling actions into transparent, measurable, and verifiable carbon reduction reports, substantively practicing ESG standards in daily operations. From national data integration to regional experience sharing across Southeast Asia, the project will progressively drive Thailand to become an ASEAN knowledge hub and technical demonstration standard for e-waste management, promoting sustainable development cooperation within the region.
