Wanted Suspect Impersonates Cop, Crashes Checkpoint in Chanthaburi

A wanted suspect impersonating a police officer broke through a Chanthaburi checkpoint on a motorcycle and escaped after a 10-kilometer chase in the early hours of July 31, prompting an intensified manhunt across the region.

31 Jul Khaosod

At 12:49 a.m. on July 31, 2025, a man impersonating a police officer on a motorcycle broke through the Baan Khao Lam joint security checkpoint in Chachang Subdistrict, Soi Dao District, Chanthaburi, heading toward Sa Kaew Province. Officers pursued the suspect for more than 10 kilometers, but he used his familiarity with the local area to escape into a side soi. Investigation confirmed the suspect was a wanted person.

Deputy Superintendent Yingyong Buppahom, commanding officer of the Baan Khao Lam checkpoint (a joint operation between police, Royal Thai Marines, and Border Patrol Police Company 114), reported that while conducting routine checkpoint operations, two men on a motorcycle approached matching an earlier alert. The driver was dressed as a police officer wearing an overlay shirt and an official police hat to deceive officers. When signaled to stop for inspection, the officers quickly recognized the suspects as Thanat ("Ai Bpong") and Thamchai ("Nai Thong"), both wanted by Pattaya Provincial Court in connection with the mysterious disappearance of two Russian siblings and a motorcycle dismantling case in Chon Buri Province.

Realizing he had been identified, the suspect accelerated and sped through the checkpoint toward Sa Kaew Province. Officers gave chase for over 10 kilometers, but the suspect turned into connecting sois and disappeared from view. Near the checkpoint, officers recovered an official police hat that the suspect had dropped approximately 100 meters from the checkpoint and logged it as evidence.

Police Regional Commander Phudungsak Raksuk convened an urgent meeting with commanding officers and investigation teams from all police stations in the area to coordinate an intensified manhunt. Police believe the suspects may be using secondary roads, village routes, natural passages, and local plantations to avoid checkpoints, and suspect they may attempt to flee across the border into Cambodia through natural channels. Police warned the public that several social media videos circulating about the incident contain false information, including old clips and unverified details.

Bank of Thailand Caps Youth Digital Transfers at 10,000 Baht

The Bank of Thailand is capping daily digital transfers for users aged 10-18 at between 3,000 and 10,000 baht to prevent criminals from exploiting youth bank accounts for money laundering and fraud schemes.

Bank of Thailand Caps Youth Digital Transfers at 10,000 Baht
31 Jul Khaosod

The Bank of Thailand has teamed up with the Thai Bankers Association and e-Money operators to impose strict limits on digital transfers and payments for users aged 10-18, aiming to combat fraud schemes that exploit young people into opening so-called "mule accounts." The central bank revealed on July 31, 2025, that criminals increasingly use youth bank accounts and e-Money accounts as intermediaries for financial crimes, unwittingly involving minors in illegal activities. To address this risk, the regulator has established age-based spending caps for digital channels: ages 10-12 are limited to 3,000 baht per day on e-Money accounts; ages 12-15 can transfer up to 5,000 baht per day through bank digital channels; and ages 15-18 can transfer up to 10,000 baht per day. These limits exclude low-risk transactions such as transfers within the same app. Banks and e-Money providers must notify customers before implementing the changes and allow those with legitimate needs to request higher limits through mobile banking, call centers, or branches. Commercial banks will complete the rollout by September 2025, while e-Money operators will finish by October 2025. The Bank of Thailand emphasized that parents should educate their children that opening accounts or allowing others to use their accounts can result in criminal liability. The central bank will closely monitor fraudster behavior and adjust measures as financial crime tactics evolve.

Champion Jaroengsuk Eyes Defense Against Former Titleholder
31 Jul Khaosod

Jaroengsuk Boonlannammvythai, the dominant Chiang Mai fighter and current Rajdamnoen 118-pound champion, will defend his title against Pangtaw Lakbunkham, a former champion and current interim title holder, at the RWS event on Saturday, August 29. In his last three fights, Jaroengsuk has been nearly impossible to catch, securing consecutive victories both by knockout and decisive decision to cement his status as a million-baht fighter, having already earned over 2 million baht in RWS bonuses excluding his fight purse. However, his next bout presents a formidable challenge, as Pangtaw is a former Rajdamnoen champion at both 115 and 118 pounds. The two fighters previously clashed nearly two years ago, with Pangtaw winning on points in that encounter—making this a redemption opportunity for Jaroengsuk, who now stakes his championship belt. The winner will immediately receive a 350,000-baht bonus from RWS, with the championship hanging in the balance on Saturday, August 29.

Heavy Rain Swells Thai Rivers, Floods 50 Homes
31 Jul Khaosod

Chiang Rai faces an escalating flood crisis as heavy rainfall continues to accumulate in upstream areas, causing rapid rises in water levels across the Mekong and Korn rivers. The swollen rivers have breached their banks and flooded residential areas in Pa Aew Don Chai subdistrict, affecting at least 50 households so far. Ban Rong Khun village near the Mekong has seen 10 homes inundated, while Ban San Sali village adjacent to the Korn River has experienced flooding in 40 households.

Subdistrict Mayor Sirimongkol Khamdee explained that days of continuous rainfall have overwhelmed the Korn River, causing it to overflow into homes, while water levels in the Mekong behind Rong Khun Market are rising rapidly and spreading across low-lying riverside areas. Governor Chucheep Phongchai has instructed the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office and all relevant agencies to monitor the situation closely, conduct rapid damage assessments, and provide immediate assistance to affected residents while remaining vigilant for potential further increases in water levels.

78-Year-Old Woman Dies After Falling Into 3-Meter Well
31 Jul Khaosod

A 78-year-old woman died after falling into a 3-meter-deep water well while resting during grass-cutting work. She had been sitting on a concrete pipe cover when it suddenly collapsed, and her family was left in shock. Surveillance footage clearly captured the tragic moment.

At 12:37 p.m. on July 31, 2026, rescue officials from Hook 31 Foundation in Nakhon Ratchasima received a report of an elderly woman who had fallen into a water well and died in the Ban Talat area, Talat Subdistrict, Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Police, rescue volunteers, and foundation staff immediately rushed to the scene.

Rescuers found the body of 78-year-old Lamud (surname withheld) inside a cement well approximately 3 meters deep. Because the well was narrow and deep, specialized rescue equipment was required to retrieve her body. Many relatives and villagers gathered at the scene, watching the recovery operation with sorrow. Investigators found the body curled up inside the well, with the victim's hat and shoes left at the edge of the opening.

Chaisin Phuphorat, head of Hook 31 volunteer rescue unit in Nakhon Ratchasima, stated that rescue personnel responded immediately upon receiving the report, but found the elderly woman had already passed away. Specialized rescue equipment was used to carefully extract her body from the deep, narrow well before handing her remains to police for further investigation.

According to Thongsakdi (surname withheld), 60, the victim's grandson, Lamud had come to cut grass in the area and sat down to rest on the cover of a water storage well made from cement pipe. Security camera footage clearly documented the incident: as Lamud sat on the well cover, it suddenly became damaged and collapsed. She fell backward into the cement water well and was unable to help herself, ultimately leading to her death.

Police initially inspected the scene, collected evidence, and released the body to relatives for funeral rites according to tradition.

Po Teck Tung Foundation Holds Merit Ceremony Honoring Queen Sirikit
31 Jul Khaosod

The Po Teck Tung Foundation has organized a merit-making ceremony (gong tek) dedicated to the late Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, at Dusit Maha Prasat Hall within the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Provisions from the ceremony are being donated to the Duang Prateep Foundation and the Thai Red Cross to dedicate merit to Princess Patcharakitiyabha and other recipients. By royal command, Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana has been designated to represent His Majesty in performing the merit-making ritual.

General Chakris Youkl, Vice Chairman of the Po Teck Tung Foundation Board, along with other board members and affiliated organizations, were present to receive the royal delegation and participate in the ceremony to express condolences and gratitude for the Queen Mother's boundless benevolence.

For the merit ceremony, the Po Teck Tung Foundation commissioned the creation of eight paper dress replicas of formal gowns worn by Queen Sirikit on various occasions. All designs were tailored using local Thai fabrics from different regions, reflecting the Queen Mother's commitment to promoting Thai silk and traditional craftsmanship to the world. The replicas include: a silk gown embellished with beetle wings; a 1985 Thai-fusion ensemble from the Phaewa silk weaving tradition of the Phuthai people in Kalasin province, featuring expanded width for modern tailoring; a work dress worn during royal visits to northern Thailand, decorated with Kayah hill tribe textiles; a suit tailored by Eric Mortensen of the Balmain fashion house using tie-dyed and crepe silk; and a 1985 evening gown made of tie-dyed silk.

Nakhon Ratchasima Unearths More Ancient City Wall Remains
31 Jul Khaosod

Nakhon Ratchasima celebrated a major archaeological breakthrough on July 31 as excavation work on the ancient city wall on the eastern side of the city revealed additional wall sections. The joint project between the Fine Arts Department Office 10 in Nakhon Ratchasima and the university ran for 20 days from July 20 to August 8, with team leader Somdej Leelamnodharm and expert archaeologist Wanpong Palakavongsa Na Ayutthaya directing the effort alongside staff and volunteer workers.

Following the significant discovery—the first major find in two decades—the team used small excavation equipment to remove sections of sanitation pipes, debris, and wooden pilings from the original ground level. This site had been occupied by a pollution control department facility. The team has now expanded excavation northward to an area measuring 7 to 11 meters in an effort to trace additional wall segments. University students and interested youth have volunteered as archaeology assistants, carefully documenting details to prevent damage to artifacts. Throughout the day, visitors have toured an exhibition alongside the dig site, with some bringing food and refreshments for the workers.

Team leader Somdej explained that the area had been disturbed by residential construction, with pilings and other structures partially disrupting original wall evidence. He stated: "We are working to uncover as much evidence as possible of the remaining city wall in this section. The next phase will involve restoration of the city wall monument in a pattern similar to findings elsewhere—running parallel as a moat around the perimeter of old Korat."

Historical records from the reign of King Rama V describe the wall and fortification as having a rectangular shape measuring approximately 1,000 meters on the east-west sides and 1,600 to 1,650 meters on the north-south sides, totaling about 5,200 meters around all four sides. The brick wall stood roughly four meters high and measured 2.6 meters thick, featuring a walkway and external moat. The four corners contained round bastions, with additional gates distributed across each side—three on the east and south, four on the north, and two on the west, totaling 15 bastions and approximately 5,300 pillars. The surrounding moat measured 10 meters wide.

Previous excavation work beginning in 1999 revealed the wall's construction method: a compacted earth and soil foundation roughly 60 centimeters deep preceded brick laying. Bricks measured approximately 30 by 15 by 7 centimeters or 25 by 13 by 5 centimeters, with soil used as mortar between bricks. The bricks were laid alternately, with long sides and wide sides placed in pairs in a distinctive interlocking pattern.

Phuket Property Boom Drives Demand For Management Services

Phuket's property boom has attracted overseas buyers who need professional management services to handle rentals, guest relations, and Thailand's increasingly strict hotel licensing and immigration rules from abroad.

31 Jul The Thaiger Travel

Why Phuket property management has become essential for overseas ownersLegacyPhuket is in the middle of a property boom, and the buyers are no longer mostly local. According to C9 Hotelworks’ 2025 Phuket market update, the island handled around 8.8 million airport arrivals last year. Fresh demand is coming from India, South Korea, and the Middle East as Chinese travel slowly returns. Many of the people buying homes here come from Russia and CIS countries, Europe, the Gulf, and India, and a large share will never live on the island full time. That one fact has quietly reshaped the market. It has turned property management into one of the most important businesses in Phuket. When an owner lives in Dubai or London, the property in Rawai does not run itself. Someone has to handle the bookings, the pricing, the cleaning, the guest at midnight, the broken pump, and a growing list of legal rules. This is the gap a professional manager fills. It is also why a few established operators have grown alongside the boom. One of them is Lofty Property Management, a Phuket-based company with more than 10 years on the island and over 10,000 guests hosted. To see why owners rely on companies like this, it helps to look at how much the job has changed.

Why the old way broke down A decade ago, running a holiday rental in Phuket was simpler. Fewer properties competed for guests, expectations were lower, and the rules were rarely enforced. None of that is true anymore. Guests now compare a Phuket stay against every other option they can book online. They expect a fast reply, a spotless property, and a smooth arrival. Quality villas on the island run at roughly 72 to 78% annual occupancy, and reaching those numbers takes constant work on pricing and marketing. More properties enter the market every year, which raises competition and makes management the difference between a full calendar and an empty one. Travellers have also changed what they want. More of them now choose private space over a hotel room, and demand is strongest for larger properties with three and four bedrooms. That shift rewards owners who present their property well and keep guests happy. It punishes those who treat management as an afterthought.

The compliance pressure owners underestimate The legal side is the part that catches owners off guard. Under Thailand’s Hotel Act, renting a property for fewer than 30 days can generally be treated as a hotel-style operation, which may bring licensing rules, safety requirements, and paperwork. Owners also have to file TM30 immigration reports for foreign guests. Enforcement has tightened, and the fines for getting it wrong are real. For an owner living abroad, keeping up with all of this from another time zone is close to impossible. This is one of the main reasons professional management has moved from a convenience to a necessity. A market with a trust problem Phuket has no shortage of property management companies. The problem is that many of them appear quickly, struggle, and disappear just as fast, often taking an owner’s peace of mind with them. Owners who have been burned once become cautious, and they start asking harder questions. How long has the company actually operated here? How many guests has it really handled? Can it work with an owner who lives on the other side of the world? That search for a company that will still be here next year is what separates the serious operators from the rest.

What owners look for now The companies’ owners trust tend to share the same traits. They have a real track record, they report clearly, and they charge in a way owners can understand. On each of those measures, Lofty Property Management stands out as one of the island’s most established choices. It now manages more than 200 properties for owners from many different countries. That scale means it has already handled the seasons, the rule changes, and the awkward situations that test a management team. Experience with international owners is its own skill. An owner in another country needs clear reporting, honest communication, and a single point of contact who answers. Companies that have done this for years know that trust comes from being transparent, not from making big promises. The economics matter too. Lofty Phuket works on a flat 20% commission, which is clear and competitive in a market where many operators charge higher rates or add extra fees on top. A lower and clearer fee leaves more income with the owner and removes the hidden charges that make owners nervous. In a market where owners watch every number, a straightforward model does a lot of the trust-building on its own. You can see how this kind of full-service management works on the Lofty Property Management website.

Good management shows up in the guest experience The clearest proof of good management is what the guest feels. A smooth check-in, a clean property, and a fast fix when something breaks all come from an operation working behind the scenes. That loop protects the owner. Happy guests leave better reviews, and better reviews bring the next booking. Lofty’s properties have collected more than 7,500 guest reviews, a signal of consistency that owners and travellers both notice. The company also runs its own Phuket holiday-rental booking platform, loftyvillas.com, where guests book properties directly, often at better rates than on large platforms. For owners, a direct channel means less dependence on third-party sites and more control over how a property is presented. An industry growing up None of this means the market is easy. New supply keeps arriving, competition is real, and rental income still varies with the season. What has changed is that owners now understand they cannot navigate it alone. The casual, do-it-yourself model that worked a decade ago has given way to a professional standard, built on real teams, clear reporting, fair fees, and proper compliance. That is the real story behind Phuket’s property boom. As the island attracts owners from around the world, the companies that manage their properties well have become part of the foundation the market rests on.

For overseas owners, the lesson is simple: Phuket property management is no longer only about finding guests. It is about protecting an asset, staying compliant, keeping standards high, and working with a team that can operate locally when the owner cannot. As more international buyers enter the Phuket market, experienced management companies such as Lofty Property Management are likely to play an increasingly important role in how the island’s rental market matures. Thailand Stockpiles 101 Days of Oil as Global Energy Prices Surge

Thailand maintains 101 days of oil reserves and shields citizens from surging global energy prices through fuel subsidies and price controls amid U.S.-Iran tensions driving costs up sharply.

Thailand Stockpiles 101 Days of Oil as Global Energy Prices Surge
31 Jul Khaosod

Thailand's Energy Ministry said it is ready to manage the sharp volatility in global oil and LNG prices, reiterating that the country has sufficient reserves for 101 days of domestic use and will continue protecting electricity rates. Deputy Permanent Secretary Veeraphatthanom Kiatfuengfoo, the ministry's spokesperson, described the severe global oil market turbulence caused by unpredictable U.S.-Iran hostilities, which directly affect worldwide energy supply. The ministry will maintain close monitoring and vigilance. Oil prices in July rose an average of 7-8 U.S. dollars per barrel above June levels, a 10-12% increase. Although neighboring countries have raised retail fuel prices in line with global markets, Thailand continues to use fuel fund mechanisms and refinery price controls approved by the Energy Policy Management Committee (EPMC) to shield citizens from rising living costs. On the security front, Thailand's oil reserves as of July 30, 2025, are sufficient for 101 days of domestic consumption. LNG imports, a critical fuel for electricity generation, have climbed sharply—from approximately 11 dollars per million BTU before the conflict to 18-20 dollars per million BTU today, nearly a 60% increase, as markets price in elevated supply risks. About 20% of global LNG supply depends on transit through the Strait of Hormuz, and prices are expected to rise further as winter demand increases. Veeraphatthanom said the ministry continuously monitors global oil and LNG prices, which remain highly volatile daily. For oil, it uses fuel fund mechanisms and refinery price controls to maintain retail prices domestically. For imported LNG, which affects electricity tariffs, the ministry will employ management strategies including increased gas extraction from the Gulf of Thailand, short-term renewable energy purchases, electricity imports from Laos, and increased operations at Mae Moh power plant to minimize LNG imports and protect electricity rates. The ministry stands ready to implement all necessary measures to reduce the cost of living for the Thai people.
