Anti-Money Laundering Office Probes Ex-Monk's Financial Flows
Authorities are investigating financial flows from the former abbot of Phutthaithaiswon Temple, with the Anti-Money Laundering Office taking over the case to examine donations and assets totaling hundreds of millions of baht for possible cr
On September 11, Thepsub Bowornchotidat, secretary-general of the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), said the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) is preparing to transfer the case of Somechoti, the former abbot of Phutthaithaiswon Temple, to AMLO for investigation of his financial flows. AMLO has been coordinating with the CIB throughout the inquiry and will continue to do so as case files are forwarded.
When asked whether public donations can be easily verified, Thepsub said all funds must be examined. Money has entered through both personal bank accounts and foundations. Regarding whether the funds involve money laundering, Thepsub confirmed that charges have already been filed. He emphasized that AMLO and the CIB are working closely together and must investigate whether the assets are connected to criminal activity. Both agencies will need to cooperate on multiple fronts.
When asked whether hundreds of millions of baht in assets under investigation can be presumed to be proceeds of crime, Thepsub said that determination cannot yet be made and more investigation is necessary. He added that the investigation will not take long and that AMLO personnel have participated in field searches.
