On September 12, Deputy Police Commissioner Pattanasak Bubphasuwan disclosed progress in the case against former Buddhist monk Somchai Otichoke, 66, formerly the abbot of Phutthaithaiswari Temple in Ayutthaya province, and his close associate Ms. Aey. Investigators are gathering evidence to examine two main areas: first, the monk's alleged breach of monastic discipline by transferring temple funds to a personal account while issuing receipts under the temple's name; and second, tracing money trails to identify accomplices. Financial documentation discovered includes donation receipts, receipts for monk ordinations, and temple renovation contributions totaling over 215 million baht. Deputy Commissioner Pattanasak said the case is expected to involve one or two additional people, and inquiries into whether Ms. Aey is a priest or layperson are still ongoing. Investigators have submitted documents to the Anti-Money Laundering Office, which is now tracing financial flows to link suspects for prosecution. A timeline for completion has not been set, but authorities aim to proceed as quickly as possible.
