PM Anutin Vows Tough Justice in Chonburi Five-Murder Case
1 Aug Khaosod

CHONBURI — Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited two sites in Bang Lamung district on Saturday where the bodies of five murder victims, including two Russian siblings, were discovered.

Anutin arrived at about 13:00 with national police chief Pol. Gen. Kitrat Phanphet and Chonburi Governor Naris Niramaiwong to review the investigation into the killings, which have raised concerns over public and tourist safety.

The delegation travelled by helicopter to the Viharn Sien helipad before visiting a forested area in Huai Yai subdistrict where the bodies of the two Russian victims were found buried. Police and rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation briefed the prime minister on the discovery and the investigation.

The delegation then travelled about two kilometres to a coconut plantation where the bodies of three Thai family members—a father, mother, and child—had been buried.

Anutin said the government would not support sentence reductions for those convicted of particularly serious crimes that damage public confidence and Thailand's reputation among tourists. He instructed authorities to strengthen security measures and increase patrols to prevent similar crimes.

The prime minister expressed condolences to the victims' families and apologised to Russian tourists and the Russian public. He stressed that the killings were allegedly committed by a specific criminal group and should not be viewed as evidence that Thailand as a whole was unsafe.

Anutin said the government and the Royal Thai Police would pursue everyone allegedly involved and ensure that the cases were prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Addressing reports that some suspects had previously served prison sentences before allegedly reoffending, Anutin said law enforcement measures may need to be reviewed.

He instructed investigators to prepare thorough and complete case files so that prosecutors and the courts would have sufficient evidence when considering charges and sentences. Asked about calls for the suspects to face capital punishment, Anutin noted that the death penalty remains available under Thai law but said sentencing was a matter for the courts.

The government's responsibility, he said, was to pursue the cases fully through the justice system and ensure that those responsible received appropriate punishment.

After visiting the two burial sites, Anutin travelled to Huai Yai Police Station for a briefing on the investigation and the arrests made in connection with the five deaths. Four suspects, including Thana "Pong" Koetthong and Thongchai "Thong" Srinil, were taken to court for detention on Saturday. Police have been instructed to expand the investigation and take decisive legal action against everyone found to have been involved.

A golden retriever saved three Chinese women from drowning in a river after one friend slipped into deep water and the others became trapped trying to help her. The dog pulled all three toward shallow water, narrowly preventing a tragedy.

Golden Retriever Rescues Three Women From River
1 Aug Khaosod

A Chinese woman shared her near-fatal experience after falling into a river while on an outing with friends. The group barely escaped drowning, saved by her golden retriever in a dramatic rescue. She explained that they were walking along a river when one friend slipped into the deep water. They rushed in to help, but found themselves trapped in danger as well—the riverbed was slippery rock, and none of them were strong swimmers. All three were close to drowning. Amid the chaos, with no clear way out and struggling desperately, hope suddenly appeared when her golden retriever swam toward them and managed to pull all three toward shallow water, allowing them to reach the shore safely. She admitted this was the closest she had ever come to death. At home, she prepared a large reward meal and invited the dog to join her at the table, but the humble dog politely declined and ate from its own corner instead. Though the incident ended warmly, it underscores an important lesson: visitors to water sources should take special precautions, especially in areas with deep water, strong currents, or slippery surfaces, to prevent unexpected accidents.

On August 1, 2025, the Regional Internal Security Command 4 (Gorm Ror Man Region 4), working with anti-smuggling units, the 1st Infantry Battalion, the 25th Infantry Regiment, Chumphon's provincial security command, Chumphon Customs, and Thai police, raided a warehouse in Tha Sae Subdistrict, Tha Sae District, Chumphon. The operation followed intelligence from a foreign labor inspection that found large quantities of goods in the facility. Authorities obtained a court warrant and conducted a lawful search.

Inspectors discovered substantial amounts of merchandise stored in four locations, including televisions, air conditioners, generators, LED light bulbs, ventilation units, chemical drums undergoing type verification, and approximately 50 sacks of secondhand clothing. Initial findings indicate most goods originated from China.

The warehouse owner stated the facility had been leased to an outside party for storage and that he is coordinating with the tenant to provide documents to officials. Authorities are currently inventorying the goods, examining import documentation, and verifying the origin of all items in detail. Any violations will be prosecuted strictly according to law.

Regional Command 4 continues to coordinate with all sectors to prevent and suppress illegal imports, tax evasion, and activities that threaten Thailand's economic security. Officials will conduct the investigation transparently, fairly, and in accordance with legal procedures, with updates to be provided as the investigation progresses.

The final was officiated by Deputy Governor Prathip Briboonratana, Thai Billiards Association President Sunthorn Jarumant, and hotel manager Dr. Rungroach Seeluangsawat, who presented the championship trophy and prize money.

Top-ranked Thai player Krit Lertsat "Nuk Songkhla," who captured the fourth tournament title on June 20 in Phang Nga, faced Santhiphap Iimboonsu "Gig Phitsanulok," a former Thai national team snooker player competing in his first final. The match used a best-of-seven frame format. In the semifinal, Krit defeated Thepchaya Unchoo 4-1, while Santhiphap beat Nairongdet Takhuntong 4-2.

In the first frame, Nuk Songkhla broke smoothly and dominated almost the entire frame, winning 70-0. Gig Phitsanulok rebounded in frame two with a perfect break and single-shot victory of 126-0. The third frame saw both players play more cautiously, with Nuk Songkhla edging out a tight win 66-54 to lead 2-1. In frame four, Nuk Songkhla increased his intensity and won decisively 83-0, leading 3-1. In frame five, Gig Phitsanulok broke well with good ball spread but missed the black ball, allowing Nuk Songkhla to finish cleanly with 68-14.

Krit Lertsat "Nuk Songkhla" claimed victory 4-1 (70-0, 0-126, 66-54, 83-0, 68-14), securing his second consecutive championship title and 200,000 baht in prize money. Thai Billiards Association President Sunthorn Jarumant congratulated Nuk Songkhla on his back-to-back wins and praised Gig Phitsanulok for his rapid skill development, expressing confidence that the Buriram tournament will be equally compelling and help identify future national team prospects.

Nuk Songkhla acknowledged the difficulty of winning, stating he had to double his concentration and precision, as Gig Phitsanulok is an accurate and highly experienced player. For the next tournament in Buriram, Nuk Songkhla aims to secure a triple crown before representing the Thai national team at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Saudi Arabia later this year.

Taiwan Study Warns Contact Lens Wearers of Dangerous Eye Parasite

Taiwan researchers discovered that dangerous eye parasites found in contact lens wearers harbor bacteria within their cells, potentially making infections harder to treat with antibiotics.

Taiwan Study Warns Contact Lens Wearers of Dangerous Eye Parasite
1 Aug Khaosod

Contact lens wearers, especially during summer months when water activities are popular, should pay closer attention to lens hygiene following new research from Taiwan showing that certain strains of Acanthamoeba—a microorganism causing corneal inflammation—harbor bacteria within their cells. Foreign experts note that this coexistence of amoeba and bacteria may increase resistance to environmental conditions and antibiotics, making treatment more difficult than before.

Dr. Chi Ta-te, head of tropical medicine at Yangming Chiao Tung University and one of the researchers, explained that Acanthamoeba is commonly found in soil, tap water, and natural water sources. While casual exposure typically causes no disease, wearing contact lenses while swimming, bathing, or showering—as well as rinsing lenses with tap water—can allow the organism to stick to the lens and enter the cornea through microscopic tears, potentially causing Acanthamoeba keratitis.

To study the characteristics of the organism in Taiwan, Yangming Chiao Tung University partnered with Taipei Military Hospital to form a research team that collected samples from 20 suspected Acanthamoeba keratitis patients. Samples from corneas, contact lenses, lens cases, and four environmental bacterial strains underwent culturing, genetic sequencing, and microscopic examination to identify the organism types and detect any resident bacteria.

The study found that all isolated strains were T4 type, the most pathogenic strain both in Taiwan and worldwide. However, within the T4 strain, multiple subtypes were identified, suggesting patients had diverse infection sources rather than a single outbreak source.

The research team made a first-time discovery: Acanthamoeba in Taiwan harbors bacteria living within its cells. Initially, researchers thought this was contamination during culturing, but antibiotics failed to eliminate the bacteria. Further investigation confirmed the bacteria live symbiotically within the amoeba.

Dr. Chi noted that currently there is no evidence confirming whether these resident bacteria make Acanthamoeba more virulent, increase antibiotic resistance, or worsen patient symptoms. However, foreign research suggests such bacteria may enhance the amoeba's survival ability and drug tolerance. The research team plans to study whether the presence of bacteria correlates with disease severity, treatment response, and infection sources.

To prevent infection, Dr. Chi recommends not using tap water, bottled water, or even saliva to rinse contact lenses, and avoiding lens wear while swimming, bathing, or showering. He also advises regularly changing lens cases and never mixing new solution with old solution remaining in the case.

Anyone experiencing eye pain, irritation, light sensitivity, or blurred vision while wearing contacts should remove the lenses immediately and see an ophthalmologist urgently to prevent disease progression and reduce the risk of vision loss.

Private Sector Calls for Government Action on Foreign Investment Revival

Thailand's private sector is calling for government support to sustain a foreign investment revival, with executives urging action on SME development, energy costs, and workforce skills to build a competitive manufacturing hub.

Private Sector Calls for Government Action on Foreign Investment Revival
1 Aug Khaosod

Speaking at the INTANIA Forum held at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Engineering on July 31, major private-sector executives outlined Thailand's economic path forward. Kattiya Intravisai, chief executive of Kasikornbank, noted that foreign investors, previously concerned about Thai political stability, now see positive signals from equity markets, capital flows, and direct foreign investment—particularly in electric vehicles and data centers. Investment promotion applications to the Board of Investment have surged, confirming Thailand's ability to attract capital in new industries.

However, executives warned that having EV factories and data centers is only the beginning. True economic progress requires job creation, workforce skills development, software businesses, clean energy, and innovation driven by data. Thammashakdi Sethakudi, CEO of Siam Cement Group (SCG), expressed concern about SMEs in the supply chain, which face higher financing costs and fewer opportunities to experiment than large companies. If SMEs fail, large corporations suffer because they depend on uncertain foreign suppliers. Government and big business must jointly upgrade Thai SMEs by reducing energy costs, adopting solar power, transitioning to green business, and creating carbon credits.

SCG also advocated building a strong domestic market and expanding across ASEAN to compete with excess production capacity from China, positioning Thailand as a premium manufacturing hub. On energy, Prime Minister's Adviser Atthapol Rikpibul stressed that power is critical to investor confidence and competitiveness, requiring Thailand to balance security, environmental sustainability, and affordability. Thailand has improved energy risk management by diversifying oil import sources and advancing solar, smart grids, and clean technology to meet Net Zero targets and support new industries like data centers.
