The Royal Thai Army has clarified that Maj. Nat Muabbaanngaan is a supplementary military officer who received a warrant officer promotion under Defense Ministry Order No. 1421/2566. The clarification came after online users shared images of a uniformed man walking beside Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during a July 14 inspection of a beer factory fire in the Ladprao area, sparking public criticism and questions about the individual's identity and role. The man was identified as former Bangkok Metropolitan Administration candidate Chit Phong Kattaphong, who previously ran in the Phayathai district. According to the army, Chit Phong is a supplementary officer without allowance attached to the 11th Military Region Command, and his promotion to warrant officer rank was awarded after completing mandated military training as part of 2023's reserve recruitment exercise. The army emphasized that his status is that of a supplementary officer under Defense Ministry regulations, not a regular active-duty soldier.

Police Arrest Man for Illegally Streaming World Cup 2026
1d ago Khaosod

Police from the Intellectual Property Division have shut down a young entrepreneur's illegal streaming operation broadcasting the 2026 FIFA World Cup without authorization. On July 14, 2025, officers led by IPOL Commander Tasanaphoomi Charupratya and Deputy Commander Phuwidet Julakasevi, along with representatives from Mono Streaming Company (the authorized broadcast rights holder), obtained a court warrant from the Intellectual Property and International Trade Court and arrested a man identified as Nisit at his residence in Muang District, Phitsanulok. Police seized a mobile phone, bank records, and a computer.

The arrest followed a complaint from Mono Streaming Company representatives that unauthorized persons were illegally distributing World Cup broadcast signals online. Investigators discovered a Facebook account posting advertisements falsely claiming to hold broadcast rights in order to gain credibility before recruiting paid subscribers and directing them to an online platform where they could watch the matches. The group had multiple members actively watching and chatting during games.

After gathering evidence, police obtained a search warrant and made the arrest. The suspect faces charges under the Copyright Act B.E. 2537 (1994) and related laws for distributing World Cup 2026 broadcast signals without authorization from the rights holder and collecting fees from viewers for profit. The case has been handed to investigators for further prosecution.

The mother of Mook, full name Ms. Tattapicha Seehabunyamak, 23, from Maha Sarakham province, was devastated to learn her daughter was among the casualties of the Lad Prao entertainment venue fire on July 12. The young woman had recently graduated from the National Sports University with a degree in sports science and had only been working in Bangkok for less than a month when she went out with friends on the night of the fire. Her mother, Nang Sutthat Seehabunyamak, recounted that Mook was a dutiful daughter who dreamed of joining the police force like her father, and had promised to send home 10,000 baht each month from her salary. According to eyewitness accounts, Mook and three friends tried to escape the flames by holding hands, but she fell after being knocked down and lost her grip, unable to save herself. Two other friends survived. Her mother said she initially did not pay attention to the fire news, thinking it was far from her, but collapsed multiple times upon learning her daughter was among the victims. She now appeals to all entertainment venue operators to strictly inspect safety systems, electrical wiring, equipment, and fire escape routes before opening for business, as these establishments serve not only young people but working-age adults seeking recreation. Mook's body remains at the Police Hospital pending DNA identification, with her father and brother assisting in the verification process, which is expected to take 6-8 hours. Once confirmed, the body will be returned home for Buddhist funeral rites.

Thailand Establishes First Formal Deportation Regulations
1d ago Khaosod

BANGKOK — The Cabinet has approved draft regulations establishing a formal process for deporting foreign nationals who enter, work or conduct business in Thailand illegally, as well as those convicted of serious crimes.

Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said the Cabinet approved the draft Prime Minister's Office regulations on deportation during its meeting on Tuesday, following a proposal submitted by Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt.

The regulations identify six categories of offences that may warrant deportation when authorities consider removal necessary to protect public order and public morality. They apply to foreign nationals who:

- Enter or remain in Thailand illegally; - Work in Thailand in violation of laws governing foreign employment; - Conduct business in Thailand in violation of the Foreign Business Act; - Forge official documents or use forged government documents; - Commit an offence carrying a prison sentence of three years or more; or - Act as a principal, instigator or supporter of any of the above offences.

The proposal follows a Cabinet resolution on 16 June appointing Pakorn to coordinate with relevant agencies on improving laws, regulations and procedures concerning immigration. The review was intended to speed up the removal of foreign nationals who commit crimes or enter the country illegally.

Thailand currently has no unified administrative regulations governing deportation, requiring agencies to coordinate closely on individual cases. The new framework is intended to make deportation procedures faster and more efficient.

Under the draft regulations, the director-general of the Department of Corrections must provide the Interior Ministry permanent secretary, or a designated official, with the names, nationalities, case files and other relevant information concerning foreign prisoners before their release. The permanent secretary or designated official must then report the case to the interior minister, who will consider issuing a deportation order without delay.

The Interior Ministry will be responsible for returning the person to their country of nationality. Where a person's nationality cannot be established, they may be deported to the country where they say they last lived before entering Thailand.

A person may also be transferred to another country where they are not a citizen, or to an international organisation, if a request is submitted through diplomatic channels. The receiving country or organisation must agree to cover all expenses associated with the person's care and removal, while the person facing deportation must also provide written consent to the transfer.

Thailand Must Tighten Safety Laws After Deadly Bar Fire

A deadly fire at a Bangkok beer hall killed at least 30 people, exposing critical gaps in Thailand's safety regulations that allow venues to evade fire codes through misclassification and inadequate enforcement. Authorities are calling for

Thailand Must Tighten Safety Laws After Deadly Bar Fire
1d ago Khaosod

A fire at a beer hall in Ladprao has killed at least 30 people and injured dozens, evoking memories of similar past disasters that have been allowed to repeat. Previous tragedies have ended only in investigations and compensation without meaningful legal reform to match modern standards and actual practices, particularly regarding venue zoning laws. A major loophole is the misclassification of businesses: many operators register as "music restaurants" when they actually operate as pubs or entertainment venues with dancing, loud music, and late hours—escaping stricter safety standards through this legal gray area. Building and materials standards also remain inadequate; many establishments still use flammable materials, lack proper fire exits and emergency doors, and fire prevention systems are not regularly inspected. The article calls for updated regulations covering all hybrid restaurant-pub operations of any size, mandatory annual inspections, and steeper penalties for violations. It also urges mandatory liability insurance for high-capacity venues to ensure victims receive rapid compensation without years of civil litigation. Above all, laws must be genuinely enforced; good laws mean nothing if applied only ceremonially, leaving the door open for repeated tragedies. The article demands that the Interior Ministry, Bangkok authorities, and all relevant agencies conduct nationwide inspections of similar establishments and urgently push through legal reforms. While this may seem like "closing the barn door after the horse has bolted," it is better than allowing innocent lives to be sacrificed again and again due to regulatory gaps and weak enforcement.

Concert Security Guards Brutally Attack Pork Vendor With Batons
1d ago Khaosod

A pork vendor from Nai Nai Am Market in Chanthaburi filed a complaint after being violently assaulted by teenage security guards working at the "Long Beach" concert near Laem Mae Phim Beach in Rayong's Kaeng District on July 12. According to the victim, he and his wife were enjoying the concert when he stopped to use an electronic cigarette in an area away from the performance stage. A masked guard approached to confiscate the device, and the vendor asked to finish smoking first, offering to comply voluntarily. However, the guard attacked him unprovoked, prompting a scuffle.

The guard then radioed for backup, and multiple guards arrived and brutally attacked the vendor with batons, targeting both sides of his head and behind his left ear—areas that could prove fatal or cause permanent disability. The victim emphasized he had not resisted or caused disruption at the event, yet faced overwhelming force. He also criticized two police officers present at the scene, saying they failed to control the assailant guards—who had used weapons—and instead escorted him away while allowing the guards to disperse. The incident has drawn heavy online criticism regarding justice and police conduct.

Investigators are currently gathering evidence from video footage and medical reports from Nai Nai Am Hospital to build a case. Police are preparing to summon the guards for questioning and will pursue legal action accordingly.

On July 14, 2025, Chitpong Kattapong, also known as 'Nutty,' a former candidate for the Phayathai District city council, went live on social media to explain his presence at the fire scene. He stated that he was wearing tactical gear that day because he had been participating in an activity in the Rangsit area. When his Phayathai District civil defense volunteer unit received an alert about the fire at a beer hall in Ladprao, he left immediately to assist.

"I have received training in high-rise buildings, large structures, and emergency response from Bangkok's disaster prevention and mitigation office. Since I've been trained, I wanted to give back and use my knowledge to help others," Kattapong explained. He noted that he had initially removed the gear when leaving the airsoft arena but put it back on for safety reasons before arriving at the fire scene.

When asked about the black radio visible in photos, Kattapong confirmed he had received training in radio communications and holds a personal radio code (Phraya 413) as a member of the Phayathai civil defense unit. He emphasized that his ID cards, including his reserve officer card, are genuine and not counterfeit. He obtained his reserve officer rank through completing three years of Reserve Officers' Training and holding a high school diploma or vocational certificate. He clarified that while he holds this rank, he receives no salary and is not a government employee, but can be called upon to assist during emergencies.

PM Orders Overhaul of Entertainment Venue Safety Rules

The PM has ordered a comprehensive review of safety regulations for entertainment venues following a deadly Bangkok nightclub fire, with authorities tasked to modernize zoning, licensing, and inspection laws to prevent future disasters.

PM Orders Overhaul of Entertainment Venue Safety Rules
1d ago Khaosod

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Interior Minister say they are pursuing long-term solutions to prevent recurring public disasters following the recent deadly nightclub fire in central Bangkok that killed and injured hundreds of people.

Authorities have tasked relevant agencies with studying and updating zoning and licensing laws for entertainment venues to be more appropriate and modern, reviewing all aspects including social conditions, culture, traditions, and livelihoods. This includes regulations on operating hours, location, music, dancing, performances, licensing, and annual inspections.

The PM stressed that enforcement has been strict in the past, but repeated incidents occur because some people deliberately break the law. An investigation team has been appointed to oversee the case with discipline and transparency, dividing witness examination into six groups: owners and operators; staff; victims' families and survivors; forensic evidence and medical examiners; rescue and firefighting personnel; and government officials and local authorities such as district offices and the electrical authority to verify legal and infrastructure compliance.

Police warn that if evidence of structural modifications, locked or blocked fire exits is found, additional charges beyond negligence will be pursued.

Beyond this nightclub tragedy, Thailand has experienced multiple major disasters in recent years causing significant loss of life: a nightclub fire in Bangkok in 2009, a pub fire in Satthahip, Chon Buri in 2022, a construction crane collapse onto a high-speed train in Nakhon Ratchasima in January 2025, and a train collision with a bus at a Bangkok crossing in May 2025.

Beyond immediate losses, such disasters risk damaging national confidence and tourism, reflecting poor standards across multiple sectors in Thailand. This latest tragedy signals that government and all stakeholders must now cooperate seriously to prevent public disasters from recurring.
