Bangkok Braces for More Heavy Rain Tonight

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt on September 25 addressed the city's water management response following overnight rainfall that peaked at 91 millimeters on September 24, leaving approximately 10 flood points in Lat Krabang and Min Buri districts that had dried by morning. With a low-pressure system still overhead bringing rain throughout the day, the governor identified Min Buri and Lat Krabang as the main areas of concern, as water levels in Pravet Canal are relatively high and will eventually drain Min Buri Canal into it. The Irrigation Department has been ordered to discharge water toward Pradipat Canal and explore alternative channels including the Muling gate, Nong Bon reservoir, and various tunnels.

Chadchart noted that morning rain had been light but urged continued monitoring through the evening, predicting overall improvement within two days and expressing confidence that severe flooding is unlikely, though localized flooding in some areas remains possible. He advised residents to plan travel carefully due to additional rain expected tonight, with all city departments including sanitation workers mobilized until September 27. Regarding sea surge and northern water inflow, the governor stated there is no cause for concern, as current water levels stand at 80 centimeters while Bangkok's flood barriers reach 3 meters—providing ample safety margin even if northern water is released at 2,000 cubic meters per second, which would mainly affect areas in Ayutthaya province outside the barrier system.

The governor noted that 99 percent of Bangkok lies within the 3-meter flood barrier protection, meaning northern water poses no risk to the city, with northern water and rainwater managed separately through different systems. Some areas such as Wat Thewarat Kunjorn temple and miller communities outside the barrier may experience normal flooding as they already lie beyond the protection system.
