Bangkok Councilor Clarifies Card-Swiping Mixup as Accidental

A Bangkok City Council member accidentally pressed a colleague's voting machine button during a July 31 session due to close seating and a malfunctioning device, prompting a revote after he clarified the unintentional error.

Bangkok Councilor Clarifies Card-Swiping Mixup as Accidental
1 Aug Khaosod

On August 1, Pattarasak Maipranetr, a Thai People's Party councilor for Yannawa District, posted on Facebook to explain an irregularity that occurred during voting at a Bangkok City Council meeting on July 31. He stated: "I would like to clarify the voting error that happened in the Bangkok City Council meeting. On July 31, during the council session, an unexpected issue arose when voting took place, and I wish to use this space to explain the details for transparency."

The error occurred when the meeting's chair opened the voting button for a motion to amend council meeting procedures. Maipranetr rushed back into the meeting room to vote on time but, in his haste, became confused and accidentally pressed the wrong voting machine button. He explained that the confusion arose because a colleague's voting machine had been malfunctioning for the previous week, forcing them to sit next to each other instead of the usual spacing. When he hurriedly cast his vote, he mistakenly pressed the button on his colleague's machine, which still had a card inserted and was unattended at the moment.

Upon realizing his error, Maipranetr immediately clarified to the council that he had accidentally pressed the wrong machine because they were seated close together and the card had a problem. He emphasized that he did not intentionally swap cards, as his colleague's card was already in place. The meeting's deputy chair subsequently ordered an inspection and a revote. Maipranetr stressed that the incident was purely accidental, caused by confusion from sitting at close quarters combined with the rush to vote in time, and that he had no intention of voting on behalf of another councilor. He apologized for the misunderstanding and confusion caused and pledged to be more careful with voting procedures in the future.

Thai Sepak Takraw Federation Chief Praises King's Cup Turnout

Nineteen nations will compete in the 39th King's Cup World Championship, a prestigious sepak takraw tournament running August 4-11 at Fashion Island in Thailand, attracting more participants than the 2026 Asian Games.

Thai Sepak Takraw Federation Chief Praises King's Cup Turnout
1 Aug Khaosod

Nathana Chaipraseuth, president of the Thai Sepak Takraw Association, expressed satisfaction that 19 nations have confirmed participation in the 39th King's Cup World Championship, to be held August 4-11 at Fashion Island. The competition is a prestigious and historic 40-year-old tournament regarded as one of the sport's most sacred championships worldwide.

International Sepak Takraw Federation Secretary-General Datuk Abdul Halim Kader noted that this King's Cup has attracted more participating nations than the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, scheduled for next month, highlighting the tournament's significant global standing.

When asked about contingency plans for Thai athletes potentially banned before the King's Cup concludes, association president Chaipraseuth confirmed that Thailand has prepared backup rosters. If a team nominally sends 14 players, the association prepares 19-20 athletes, ensuring sufficient depth should any competitor face sanctions.

Regarding sepak takraw's inclusion in the 2026 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar—a region less experienced with the sport—Dr. Seehasak Arirachakaran, the association's vice president and secretary-general, indicated the federation will collaborate with the Olympic Council of Asia to develop competitive teams in the Middle East. He noted that Thai coaches are already based there, and by promoting more competitions in underrepresented regions like South Asia and East Asia, the sport can strengthen globally and improve its chances of remaining in future Asian Games.

Ancient Golden Teak Tree Draws Lottery Seekers to Kamphaeng Phet Temple
1 Aug Khaosod

On August 1, a reporter visited Wat Kalpaprueksa in Lan Dok Flowers subdistrict, Mueang district, Kamphaeng Phet province, following the discovery of a massive golden teak tree near the temple's Ping River landing on July 19. Initially mistaken for ordinary timber and nearly felled, the tree was identified as a golden teak after river currents washed away sediment, revealing its true nature. The tree, measuring 22.8 meters long and 3.6 meters in circumference, was then hoisted and placed beside the temple's ordination hall, where locals conducted veneration ceremonies and presented offerings.

Large crowds gathered to pay respects, bringing flowers, Thai silk, and powder to rub on the tree while seeking lucky lottery numbers. Many visitors reported seeing the numbers "52, 44, 79, 525, and 857," while incense divination on the day the tree was brought up revealed "789." According to temple committee member Saad Santiam, a former village headman, the tree's previous owner reported experiencing sudden wealth after encountering it, prompting villagers to bring it to the temple to share its fortune.

During the ceremony, a medium channeling the tree's spirit identified her as "Mae Jan Hom," a 307-year-old goddess who said she emerged from the water because of the cold. Since then, villagers have reported receiving winning lottery numbers daily. Temple officials believe the perfectly preserved golden teak represents an auspicious time for the tree to create merit and bring luck to the community, especially with the August 1 government lottery draw marking the first draw since its arrival.

Young Elephant Separated From Herd Rescued in Kanchanaburi

A newborn male elephant calf swept away by floodwaters near Mae Nam Noi river in Kanchanaburi was rescued and transported to Thairyoak National Park headquarters for emergency treatment of severe dehydration and infections.

Young Elephant Separated From Herd Rescued in Kanchanaburi
1 Aug Khaosod

Thairyoak National Park's conservation management unit mobilized staff and veterinarians to rescue a male elephant calf, less than two weeks old, after it was separated from its herd near the Mae Nam Noi river in Kanchanaburi province on July 30–31, 2025. The calf was moved urgently from the flood-risk area to the park headquarters for intensive care.

On July 30 at 6:00 a.m., park rangers received a report from residents of a lost elephant calf on the riverbank. Rangers took approximately 1–2 hours by boat to reach the remote location. Overnight observation showed the calf calling repeatedly for its mother and exhibiting behaviors such as sucking on rocks and tree roots, but with no herd response. Officials estimated the calf had been swept away by floodwaters about two days earlier due to heavy rainfall in the area. Rangers provided milk under veterinary guidance to sustain the animal.

On July 31 at 9:00 a.m., veterinarians assessed the calf and found it to be a 40-kilogram male in critical condition with severe dehydration, mouth ulcers and inflammation reducing milk intake, conjunctivitis, and an umbilical wound. The team immediately transferred the calf to park headquarters for emergency intervention.

Peer Puangmali, head of Thairyoak National Park, stated: "We have established a temporary enclosure with disinfectant spraying and assigned staff to provide round-the-clock care under close veterinary supervision."

On August 1, veterinarians will collect blood samples to test for elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV). While awaiting results, the calf will remain in quarantine for continued monitoring. The park and veterinary team are committed to comprehensive care to ensure the young elephant's health and safety according to animal welfare standards.

Police Arrest Two More Suspects in Family Murder Case
31 Jul Khaosod

Police have arrested two more suspects, Chatchanan "Chalk" and Asadang "Ball," as accomplices in a murder and robbery case led by Pong and Thang. Following police interrogation, Pong and Thang led officers to burial sites in a wooded area in Banglamung district, Chon Buri, where two Russian siblings were found buried. The suspects later confessed to killing and burying a family of three—a mother, father, and child—in a nearby location approximately two kilometers away. Officers excavated the grave and recovered all three bodies from a single burial pit, as the suspects indicated. According to the investigation, the suspects impersonated police officers to conduct a fake search at the victims' home before forcibly taking the family to a coconut plantation where the murders occurred. Police are continuing to gather evidence for legal proceedings. Tuk-taa, the sister of the deceased family members, expressed with tears that the family had spent over a month searching for answers after her sister, niece, and brother-in-law disappeared without contact. She stated that without the Russian siblings' case leading to the suspects' arrest, the family may never have discovered the fate of their three relatives, and thanked all officers involved in solving the case.

Fire Ravages Water Pump Factory; Firefighters Overcome by Fumes

A fire at a water pump factory in Nonthabuki left one firefighter hospitalized with respiratory injuries after crews were overcome by fumes from unknown chemicals stored inside. Dozens of firefighters took 90 minutes to control the two-stor

Fire Ravages Water Pump Factory; Firefighters Overcome by Fumes
31 Jul Khaosod

On July 31, Deputy Investigator Vorawut Pudchim of Bang Sri Muang Police Station in Nonthaburi received a report of a fire at a water pump, spare parts, and gardening equipment distribution company near Chao Phraya Market on Bangkruay–Thai Noi Road in Bang Krang, Muang District, Nonthaburi. He coordinated with dozens of fire trucks from Bang Krang, Bang Sri Muang, Bang Len, and Nonthaburi municipal authorities and neighboring municipalities to fight the blaze.

The building was a two-story concrete warehouse approximately 12 meters wide and 30–40 meters long, engulfed in intense flames. Firefighters sprayed water continuously, but several became incapacitated because the contents of the warehouse—particularly unknown chemicals—had not been disclosed. They withdrew, and hazmat crews equipped with breathing apparatus and oxygen tanks re-entered the building. During suppression efforts, the structure emitted loud cracking sounds, prompting an evacuation order for safety. After approximately 90 minutes of water application, firefighters gained control of the fire.

Thawatchai, a 37-year-old firefighter from Bang Phai Municipality, suffered chest tightness, breathing difficulty, and hemoptysis (coughing up blood) and was transported to Bamrasnaradura Hospital. Preliminary investigation identified the facility as a radiator manufacturing plant with stored paper, though the exact cause of ignition remains unknown pending forensic examination. The factory owner reported the fire-affected building is a workshop storing goods and cardboard boxes with no occupants at the time. Damage assessment is incomplete, though structural damage appears extensive while inventoried stock was minimal. The company maintains fire insurance. Investigators will coordinate with forensic officers to examine the burned structure further once the heat subsides, and the area has been cordoned off as a danger zone pending cause determination.
