Bond Yields and Oil Prices Spur Market Volatility
Rising bond yields and oil prices are driving market volatility, with Krung Thai Bank's strategists recommending investors rebalance portfolios and shift toward Healthcare and Energy sectors for the week of September 7–11, 2025.
Krung Thai Bank's investment strategy team sees continued market swings from bond yields and oil prices, recommending investors adopt a "Cautious Optimism" approach by rebalancing portfolios and diversifying into Healthcare and Energy sectors. In their weekly investment overview for September 7–11, 2025, the team notes that U.S. stock markets remained fairly flat, with the S&P 500 up 0.1%, Nasdaq up 0.4%, and the Dow Jones down 0.3%. Strong corporate earnings have helped support the market, but rising oil prices and bond yields continue to exert downward pressure. Investors are focusing on companies with high-quality earnings rather than taking on broader market risk.
On the debt and commodities front, the 10-year U.S. bond yield rose 6.4 basis points to 4.78%, while Thailand's 10-year yield climbed 8 basis points to 2.24%. Brent and WTI crude oil prices surged more than 7% and nearly 10% respectively, driven by U.S.-Iran tensions affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Gold prices fell 0.6% as a stronger U.S. dollar and higher bond yields outweighed safe-haven demand.
The investment strategy maintains a slightly overweight stance on equities over the medium term, but recommends reducing risk in the near term through portfolio rebalancing. Investors should consider taking profits on volatile, high-performing tech and semiconductor stocks, while maintaining a core portfolio with broad diversification. The satellite portfolio should increase Healthcare holdings to reduce volatility and add Energy stocks as a hedge against sustained high oil prices. Technology and semiconductor stocks remain positive long-term but should be held in the short term, with investors ready to buy dips when prices fall. Chinese A-Shares warrant selective investment focused on strategically important industries.
Gold remains a valuable long-term portfolio diversifier, with key support levels at $4,300 and $3,900 per ounce. For fixed income, investors should manage duration to keep cash flow maturity in the short to medium range, allowing portfolio flexibility to respond to interest rate changes. Key events to watch this week include the European Central Bank meeting, U.S. inflation data (PPI on September 10 and CPI on September 11), and the FOMC meeting on September 15–16, 2025. The Fed is currently in its Blackout Period, during which board members refrain from commenting on monetary policy before the FOMC decision.
