On October 27, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Surachai Chomklin revealed that the Cabinet endorsed the creation of the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change. The centre aims to elevate cooperation among ASEAN nations in tackling climate change, while expanding access to funding, technology, and expertise. It will also support database development to inform policy and drive Thailand's goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Surachai said the centre will serve as a key mechanism to boost regional capacity for emissions reduction and climate adaptation, promote technology and knowledge exchange, and support global climate objectives. Thailand will chair the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change starting February 2027 and is preparing to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2028. Thai priorities include upgrading carbon credit standards through the HACI project, cutting methane emissions, and linking data with the new centre to enhance regional climate action.
