Cabinet Approves Central Thailand Flood Drainage Project
Thailand's Cabinet approved an eight-year flood drainage project connecting central provinces to the Gulf of Thailand, designed to protect agricultural areas in Ang Thong and Ayutthaya from recurring floods starting in 2027.
At 2 p.m. on September 29, Government Spokesperson Ekaphop Piappised announced the Cabinet's approval of the Chai Nat–Phasi Charoen–Gulf of Thailand drainage project to address long-term flooding. The project will run for eight years from 2027 to 2034 and is deemed economically worthwhile, reducing significant damage and protecting agricultural areas in central provinces such as Ang Thong and Ayutthaya from flood impact.
The Cabinet also approved an extension of the Bang Bua–Bang Thai drainage canal project, originally scheduled to finish in 2025–2026, to 2028 due to delays in land transfer. The Cabinet instructed rapid completion with no further extensions. The Irrigation Department reported that the drainage contract is expected to be finished by 2027.
