Canadian Man Arrested in Chiang Mai Sexual Assault Case
A 38-year-old Canadian man was arrested at a Chiang Mai hotel on September 23 after a British tourist reported a sexual assault that occurred earlier that month. Police acted quickly after discovering he planned to flee Thailand.
Police arrested a 38-year-old Canadian national, Avudo Guioyanni Ochoa Saenz, at a hotel in central Chiang Mai on September 23 at 11 p.m. on a warrant from Chiang Mai Provincial Court charging him with sexual assault. The arrest was coordinated by the Tourist Police Division 2 and Mae Ping Police Station following a complaint relayed by the British Consulate in Chiang Mai. The victim, a British tourist, reported that the assault occurred on September 13 after she had been socializing with a group of friends, including the suspect, while consuming alcohol together. After filing a complaint with Mae Ping Police, the victim underwent a medical examination at a hospital and investigators gathered evidence to present to the court for the arrest warrant. Officers checking the suspect's phone discovered travel information indicating he planned to leave Thailand early on the morning of his arrest. Acting quickly, police located and detained him at his hotel before he could depart the country. The suspect is now in custody at Mae Ping Police Station pending legal proceedings, and authorities said they would ensure fairness for both parties.
