Thailand Braces for Heavy Rains, Flash Floods Through September 27
Thailand's disaster agency has activated emergency response across 70 provinces through September 27 as a strong low-pressure system brings heavy rains, flash floods, and mudslides to the Northeast, Central, and Southern regions.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has alerted 70 provinces nationwide to prepare for heavy rains, sudden flooding, flash floods, and mudslides between September 23–27. The severe weather is expected to begin in the Northeast region before spreading to central areas, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, with the South also facing heavy impact. On September 23, the department coordinated across all 70 provinces to monitor conditions and position disaster response teams and machinery in high-risk areas for immediate emergency response.
Department Director Theerawat Kachamat stated that the Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert covering September 23–27, with a strong low-pressure system moving from central Vietnam to affect the lower Northeast, East, Central regions, Bangkok, and surrounding areas. Southwest monsoon winds will intensify over the Andaman Sea, Thailand waters, and the Gulf of Thailand, bringing waves of 2–3 meters in the upper Gulf and exceeding 3 meters in thunderstorm areas. The National Water Resources Office has also issued a warning for stagnant flooding, flash floods, and bank collapses.
Monitoring areas for flash floods, flash floods, mudslides, and stagnant water include all provinces in the North, Northeast, and Central regions, and 7 Southern provinces: Chumphon, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Narathiwat. High-wave alert areas in the Central region cover 6 coastal provinces: Chachoengsao, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Phetchaburi, and Prachuap Khiri Khan. The South includes 3 provinces: Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Songkhla.
