On July 17, 2026, Pol. Col. Nophadol Rukchati, commander of Nong Khai Provincial Police, along with other provincial officials and the Nong Khai inter-agency task force, received two Thai girls from Lao authorities at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge checkpoint in Muang District, Nong Khai province. The teenagers had fallen victim to human trafficking. According to initial questioning, the two 15-year-old victims from Chiang Mai had rented accommodation together with a female friend in Fang District starting in February. On April 3, their roommate invited them to travel to Laos, accompanied by three older acquaintances who ferried them across the Mekong River via a natural crossing near Chiang Saen in Chiang Rai. Upon arriving in Ton Phuang in Bokeo province, a Lao woman drove them to a guesthouse, confiscated their phones, and told them a friend owed a debt of 300,000 baht, using them as collateral while detaining them. Four days later, on April 7, a Chinese man arrived and forced them to call relatives demanding ransom, threatening to sell them in Myanmar or harvest their organs if payment was not made. The girls contacted their relatives, who filed a missing person report at Fang Police Station. Thai authorities coordinated with Laotian officials to locate and safely extract both girls, after which they were taken to protective custody in Vientiane. Following completion of official procedures, they were escorted through Nong Khai immigration and returned to Thailand.

At 10:00 a.m. on July 17, 2569, Police Major General Kiatikul Sandinetr, commander of Sub-Division 2, ordered Police Captain Marut Sudnongbua, superintendent of Phahon Yothin Police Station, and an investigative team from Sub-Division 2 to join electrical authority officials in inspecting the brewery located on Ladprao Road, Chomphon subdistrict, Chatuchak district, Bangkok—the site of a fire that occurred on July 13. Investigators sought to examine the electrical panel at the scene and gather additional evidence regarding the brewery's original 30/100-amp electrical permit. The establishment later increased its power usage and requested a capacity upgrade, but when electricity officials arrived to conduct an inspection, the shop declined, claiming it was not ready. Whether the unauthorized electrical modifications and subsequent overload caused a short circuit that triggered the fire remains under investigation and will be determined once electrical authority evidence is reviewed at the next meeting.

Taiwan extended its visa-free travel program for Thai nationals until July 2027, as part of broader efforts to strengthen ties with Southeast Asia under its New Southbound Policy.

Taiwan Extends Visa-Free Travel for Thai Nationals Until 2027
2h ago Khaosod

Taiwan has extended its trial visa-free entry program for Thai passport holders by another year, allowing Thais to travel to the self-ruled island without a visa until 31 July 2027. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said the extension, which takes effect on 1 August 2026, also applies to nationals of Brunei and the Philippines. The decision followed an inter-agency review of Taiwan's visa and entry policies for countries covered under its New Southbound Policy (NSP), an initiative aimed at strengthening ties with Southeast Asia and other regional partners. MOFA said authorities evaluated the effectiveness of the visa-free scheme and other travel facilitation measures before agreeing to extend the program for another year. The ministry said it will continue reviewing and refining its visa policies to strengthen bilateral relations, attract more international visitors and ensure border security and public safety. In addition to the visa-free extension for Thai, Bruneian and Philippine nationals, Taiwan will continue its simplified visa program for high-end group tourists and its Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) scheme for eligible travelers from India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos through the end of 2027. However, Cambodian nationals will no longer be eligible for those two programs from August 1, 2026. Taiwan said it will also continue discussions with partner governments to improve reciprocal visa arrangements for Taiwanese travelers.

On September 17, 2025, Sophon Saram, President of Parliament and Speaker of the House of Representatives, along with Maharnnop Dechwittaksa, honorary chairman of the Institute of the Throne Association, Dr. Titima Lorphipattana, honorary chairman and secretary of the Institute of the Throne Foundation, and other parliamentary officials, attended a groundbreaking ceremony at the home of Mr. Tu Misanthia in Nong Khu Noi subdistrict, Lam Plai Mat district, Buriram Province. The ceremony marked the launch of a house-building project for disabled and low-income residents, undertaken as a tribute to His Majesty the King.

Sophon explained that the initiative is a collaboration between the Goodness Club for the Nation's Father, the Institute of the Throne Foundation, the Institute of the Throne Association, the Anatthapon Saram Foundation, and the private sector. The project will build homes for residents across six districts of Buriram Province. Eligible recipients must have low incomes, face hardship, be disabled, and possess good moral character with no drug-related involvement.

The project aims to construct 10 homes across six districts, with plans for expansion in the future. Progress reports will be issued annually on the King's birthday to encourage public participation. Sophon stressed that the initiative reflects genuine goodwill and involves cooperation between local government and administrative authorities, aimed at improving quality of life with human dignity. "Buriram shows the goodness in people's hearts," he said.

Mr. Tu, the first beneficiary, expressed joy and gratitude, noting that the new home will significantly improve his family's living conditions. He previously lived in a cramped, deteriorating structure borrowed from his aunt and sometimes had to sleep in a shelter. As a community health volunteer facing hardship, he was selected for the program. The municipality is demolishing his old home and constructing the new one.

Thai Science Creator SaySci Wins Prestigious Webby Awards
3h ago Khaosod

BANGKOK — 17 July 2026, Thai science creator "Pol" Nawapol Chuamvarasart, better known as SaySci, has made history by becoming the first Thai creator to receive honours at the 30th Webby Awards after winning two awards in the Social Content Series – Education & Science category for his content series "Internet, but Science."

SaySci won both major awards in the Social Content Series – Education & Science category and also received Webby Honoree recognition in the Creator – Education, Science & Technology category.

Established in 1996, the Webby Awards have been dubbed the "Internet's highest honour" and the "Oscars of the Internet" by The New York Times. They are widely regarded as one of the world's most prestigious awards for digital content, recognising excellence in websites, apps, social media, podcasts, videos and other online media.

This year saw more than 13,000 entries submitted from over 70 countries, with only about 4% of all submissions receiving recognition. Winners in other categories included global organisations and brands such as NASA, Google, National Geographic Society and Claude AI, as well as projects involving LISA of BLACKPINK and Justin Bieber.

The Webby Winner is selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), while the People's Voice Winner is determined through public voting. Organisers said more than 940,000 people cast over 4.6 million votes this year.

The work that propelled SaySci to the awards is "Internet, but Science," a series that explains internet memes, viral trends, games, news and pop culture through scientific principles, transforming online entertainment into accessible educational content that connects directly with everyday life.

In keeping with the Webby Awards tradition of limiting acceptance speeches to just five words, SaySci chose to say: "Six Seven? Skibidi? Brainrot? …Science!" The phrase reflected the concept behind his work, which bridges internet culture and science.

However, Nawapol revealed that despite receiving a world-class award, the achievement did not attract as much attention in Thailand as he had hoped. He said he had sent press releases to several media organisations and sought sponsorship to travel to New York City to accept the award, but was unable to secure funding in time and therefore missed the opportunity to attend the ceremony in person.

He said he was not trying to complain but hoped his experience would encourage Thai society to place greater value on Thai creators and provide more support for talented people across a wide range of fields, including science, sport, the arts and education.

Nawapol also emphasised that Thailand has many talented science communicators and expressed hope that his success would inspire more Thai creators to showcase their work internationally while continuing to produce engaging, accessible and easy-to-understand science content for the public.

British Monk Receives Royal Title in Thailand

King Maha Vajiralongkorn elevated British-born monk Phra Brahma Patcharyanamuni to supreme monastic rank in July, recognizing the 68-year-old's four decades of Buddhist practice at a forest monastery in northeastern Thailand.

British Monk Receives Royal Title in Thailand
3h ago Khaosod

On July 14, the Royal Gazette published a royal decree establishing monastic rank, by which King Maha Vajiralongkorn graciously elevated Phra Brahma Patcharyanamuni to the rank of Somdet Phra Racha Khana (supreme monastic title), with the formal designation inscribed in the royal charter as Somdet Phra Maha Patcharyanamuni Sri Vipassana Bhavana Gosal. The elevation was announced on July 14, 2026, effective from July 12, 2026. The monk is currently 68 years old with 46 Buddhist Lenten seasons, residing at Ban Rai Tho Si Monastery in Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima, and is a disciple of the famous meditation master Luang Pha Cha Subhaddo of Wat Nong Pa Pong. His birth name was Shaun Michael Chiverton, born in England in 1958.

In his youth, he suffered from poor health and asthma, which frequently interrupted his schooling, yet he excelled through self-study. His father had hoped he would secure a scholarship to study at a prestigious British university. While studying, he encountered Buddhist teachings and developed profound faith, viewing them as the "truth" he had been seeking. From his teenage years, he became interested in meditation and Buddhist practice. He worked part-time while studying and traveled abroad from age 17, spending two years gaining experience before deciding that practice and study were more important than university.

In 1978, he met and began practicing with Ajahn Sumedo (later elevated to Somdet Phra Brahma Vicharyanamuni), the first Western disciple of Luang Pha Cha at Hampstead Vihara in England. He then observed the anagarika precepts (wearing white robes) with Ajahn Sumedo, maintaining the ten precepts for one year, before traveling to Thailand. In 1979, he was ordained at Wat Nong Pa Pong in Warin Chamrap District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, and received bhikkhu ordination in 1980 with Phra Bodhiyanathera as his preceptor.

Before arriving in Thailand, he had resolved to spend five years at Wat Nong Pa Pong unconditionally to study practice. Upon meeting Luang Pha Cha, he developed deep respect for his teaching method, which combined compassion and profound wisdom, enabling him to endure the hardships of strict forest monastery discipline and communal life with Thai monks, eventually progressing significantly. Although a foreigner, language was not a barrier; he believed that foundational Pali and Sanskrit were equally challenging for both Thais and foreigners, so he diligently memorized the script until he could read, then studied dictionaries while practicing under his teachers. In 2020, King Maha Vajiralongkorn graciously granted him special approval to change his nationality to Thai, effective March 9, 2020. He was promoted to Phra Racha Khana rank on July 28, 2019, and to Phra Racha Khana Thep rank on July 17, 2020, with subsequent promotions in subsequent years.

SEC Opens Hearing on Major Shareholders to Strengthen Market Standards
3h ago Khaosod

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) opened a public hearing on July 17, 2026, on draft regulations to upgrade standards for major shareholders of securities firms, derivatives traders, and digital asset businesses, aiming to ensure major shareholders meet appropriate qualifications and boost confidence in Thailand's capital market. The SEC previously refined principles regarding prohibitions for business operators and conducted consultations from April to May 2026, with most stakeholders supporting the proposed framework. The SEC has now prepared three draft announcements with key points including: (1) standardizing major shareholder prohibitions across all business types to address current risks, such as expanding the scope of money laundering violations and financial support for terrorism and weapons proliferation both domestically and internationally, while covering cross-sector risks under SEC oversight; (2) establishing uniform standards for assessing the severity of major shareholder conduct across all business types; and (3) providing a 90-day transition period from the announcement's effective date for businesses and major shareholders to prepare for compliance. Stakeholders and interested parties may submit comments via the SEC website (https://www.sec.or.th/TH/Pages/PB_Detail.aspx?SECID=1189) or the central legal system (https://law.go.th/listeningDetail?survey_id=NzY3MERHQV9MQVdfRlJPTlRFTkQ=), with email submissions accepted until August 16, 2026.

False Reports Shake Thai Stock Market Confidence

False securities reports filed under a mystery investor's name shook Thai stock market confidence in early July, with claims of a 30-billion-baht stake in True Corporation later revealed as fake by the company and the Securities and Exchang

False Reports Shake Thai Stock Market Confidence
3h ago Khaosod

Thai investors and listed companies were thrown into confusion on June 30 and July 2, 2025, when an unidentified woman named Supaport Pimpongse filed seven securities acquisition and disposal reports (Form 246-2) with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) covering six major Thai stocks: Kasikornbank Public Company Limited, Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited, Asia Aviation Public Company Limited, Major Cineplex Group Public Company Limited, GJ Steel Public Company Limited, and True Corporation Public Company Limited. These acquisitions reportedly spanned from 2024 onwards but were only reported in the two days mentioned.

True Corporation's case drew particular scrutiny when reports claimed Supaport had purchased shares worth 30 billion baht, securing a 7% stake as a major shareholder. Questions immediately arose about her identity, background, and financial capacity to make such a massive investment. On July 6, 2025, True Corporation issued a clarification stating that the data on the SEC website was under review because some securities listed did not actually exist, and denied ever offering preferred shares to the general public. True Corporation Chairman Supchai Chearavanont called the reports "fake news" and directed the media to seek clarification from the SEC.

True's denial severely damaged confidence in Thailand's capital market, raising widespread concerns about whether the SEC's systems for receiving and publishing investment-related information have adequate verification procedures and investor protections against misleading data. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nititharnprasertsak ordered the SEC to urgently clarify the facts and communicate transparently to the public to restore investor confidence. The Stock Exchange of Thailand's board chairman and managing director Assdech Kongsiri pledged to coordinate with the SEC and listed companies to support the investigation and provide investors with accurate and timely information.

On July 9, 2025, SEC Secretary-General Pranong Butsratakul and her team held a press conference confirming they have continuously monitored and investigated the case without delay or neglect. She explained that the seven reports covering six securities were acquisitions made over different periods beginning in 2024. When the SEC detected irregularities, it marked the data as "preliminary information" on July 3. On July 7, the status was changed to "under verification" due to inconsistencies, and following confirmation from the relevant listed companies on July 8, the SEC identified the data as inaccurate and took it down from the system.
