Doctor Warns: Heart Attack Can Strike Without Chest Pain
9 Aug Khaosod

Dr. Jetsada Bunyavongvirojn, Deputy Director of Primary Care at Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, cautions that heart ischemia can develop without chest pain and outlines warning signs to monitor. Heart disease increasingly affects younger people who may be working, raising children, and planning their futures before suddenly experiencing unusual fatigue, tightness, nausea, or dizziness. Because these symptoms lack the dramatic chest-clutching pain shown in television dramas, many assume they are unrelated to the heart—a dangerous misconception. Heart muscle ischemia need not present as crushing chest pain in everyone, especially in women, elderly patients, and those with diabetes; symptoms may be subtle or appear completely unrelated to cardiac problems.

The good news is that recognizing warning signs allows faster hospital arrival and earlier treatment, reducing heart muscle damage. Six key warning signs to monitor include:

1. Unusual fatigue—previously manageable activities like climbing two flights of stairs now leave you breathless after half a flight, or you tire abnormally fast during routine activities. While multiple conditions cause fatigue, new fatigue triggered by exertion and relieved by rest warrants cardiac concern, as the heart requires increased blood and oxygen during activity; narrowed coronary vessels may deliver insufficient supply.

2. Tightness, heaviness, pressure, or burning in the center of the chest without acute pain. Many patients describe this as heaviness, tightness, a lump in the throat, chest burning, or shortness of breath—symptoms often mistaken for acid reflux or indigestion. If symptoms occur during brisk walking, stair climbing, exertion, or stress and improve with rest, heart ischemia must be considered.

3. Pain or discomfort radiating to the arm, wrist, back, shoulder, or neck. Some patients experience primary symptoms in the left arm, both arms, shoulder, wrist, neck, or upper back rather than the chest. This occurs because nerves carrying sensation from the heart connect to other body regions, causing the brain to mislocalize pain.

4. Nausea, throat tightness, and cold sweating without eating spoiled food. This combination—particularly in women and elderly patients—can appear suddenly with nausea, throat tightness, cold perspiration, paleness, and lightheadedness. While many attribute this to indigestion or stomach problems, sudden onset accompanied by chest tightness, fatigue, or cardiac risk factors warrants cardiac evaluation.

5. Dizziness, heart palpitations, or fainting sensation. Heart ischemia can affect the heart's electrical system, causing palpitations, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, dimming vision, or loss of consciousness—particularly during exertion. Such symptoms require immediate evaluation to rule out coronary narrowing, arrhythmia, or structural heart abnormalities.

6. Cold sweating without obvious cause—no heat, no exercise, just profuse sweating and chills with poor appetite. Combined with chest tightness, fatigue, nausea, or dizziness, this warrants urgent cardiac assessment.

Thailand Deploys Drone System for Flood Disaster Response

Thailand's National Research Council has launched drone technology centers across four provinces, including one in flood-prone Nan, to improve disaster response and deliver aid to remote areas during emergencies.

Thailand Deploys Drone System for Flood Disaster Response
9 Aug Khaosod

Thailand's National Research Council (NRC) under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation has launched a field inspection of drone technology research and innovation for flood preparedness in Nan province. Dr. Wipharatna Di-ong, director of the NRC, led a delegation including academics and local officials to the Drone Technology Center in Chiang Chai subdistrict, Pua district, Nan province on August 8, 2025.

Dr. Di-ong stated that the NRC aims to apply research and innovation practically in local communities, with drone technology improving survey efficiency, situation assessment, and aid delivery to hard-to-reach areas. The initiative focuses on building local capacity through training drone pilots and volunteers for sustained emergency response. Large drones can carry 70–80 kilograms of supplies including food, water, and emergency goods.

Pua district, which receives water from multiple areas and faces high flood risk, will benefit from the drone center's enhanced monitoring and rapid response capabilities. Chiang Chai subdistrict has a funnel-shaped topography that collects runoff from several districts, making it vulnerable to flooding; over 600 households in nine villages were previously affected.

The NRC is supporting four drone disaster response centers nationwide in Nan, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla provinces, providing knowledge, equipment, and personnel training to enable efficient surveying, monitoring, warning, and disaster impact mitigation.

Friend Says Gunman Showed No Bullying Marks Before Attack

A close friend of the 14-year-old gunman who killed two teachers at a Nonthaburi school on August 7 denies online claims that the student was bullied, saying he showed no warning signs before opening fire during a math class.

Friend rejects bullying claims about Nonthaburi school shooting gunmanLegacyA close friend of the student gunman in the Nonthaburi school shooting on August 7 has claimed that the student had never been bullied or involved in disputes with classmates. The close friend, identified only as Mak (pseudonym), gave the account after police finished questioning him yesterday, August 8, with his parents’ permission. Mak described the perpetrator, now reported to have been 14 years old, as quiet and reserved, rarely speaking to others. He typically sat in the far-left corner at the back of the classroom. According to Mak, the student had never been bullied, teased, or physically assaulted during the years they had known each other from Mathayom 1 to Mathayom 3. He could not comment on the student’s primary school years as they did not know each other at the time. Photo from Wason Wanichakorn via AP Photo Khaosod reported that Mak also rejected claims circulating online that the student had previously been kicked into a toilet or subjected to prolonged bullying, describing them as false. As far as Mak knew, the student had no grudges or disputes with other students. The only issue he was aware of involved a Thai-language teacher, after the student complained about struggling with the amount of homework and receiving a grade of zero in the subject. The student made several attempts to resolve the failing grade before eventually passing and regularly complained to Mak about the issue. Mak also confirmed that the student had previously brought a BB gun to school in his bag, showing it to friends and firing it on school grounds. Another student reported the incident, leading a teacher to confiscate the BB gun and the school to deduct conduct points. Photo from Sakchai Lalit via AP Photo On the morning of the shooting, all students, including the accused student, attended the morning flag ceremony before going to class as usual. The incident occurred during the second lesson, a mathematics class, while the teacher was explaining homework and preparing to tutor the students. About 10 minutes into the lesson, the student put in earplugs, stood up from his desk at the back of the classroom and walked towards the front carrying a shoulder bag containing ammunition. Mak alleged that the student then fired at the mathematics teacher before leaving the classroom and firing at a teacher in another room. Mak attempted to find a place to take cover during the incident. There had been no warning signs or tense atmosphere in the classroom immediately before the shooting, he added. Investigators are still working to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the motive behind the incident. A deputy superintendent at Ban Phai Police Station in Khon Kaen has been transferred following an assault on a local journalist. On August 9, 2569 (2026), Khon Kaen Provincial Police explained the incident that circulated on social media on August 8, in which a police officer with the rank of deputy superintendent at Ban Phai Station was accused of assaulting a local journalist, causing injury within the police station compound.

According to the police report, on August 7 at 7:30 p.m. near the investigation room at Ban Phai Station, Deputy Lieutenant Worawit (surname withheld), the deputy superintendent, engaged in casual banter with local journalist Tri Thep at a marble table beside the investigation room. However, Worawit then grabbed Tri Thep in a chokehold forcefully. When Tri Thep stood up and walked away, Worawit followed and grabbed him again, asking mockingly, "Upset over just this joke?" Tri Thep then lost consciousness. When he regained awareness, he found himself injured with a lacerated right eyebrow and red swelling on his neck. Rescue personnel transported him to Ban Phai Hospital, where he received medical treatment.

Lieutenant Colonel Rakthat Reuang Jarun, the superintendent of Ban Phai Station, immediately visited the injured journalist to express concern and assured fair handling of the incident. The station determined that the injuries resulted from Worawit's actions, though the exact cause remained unclear. For transparency and fairness, Khon Kaen Provincial Police ordered Worawit transferred immediately to assist operations at the provincial police center, effective August 8, 2569. An investigative committee has been appointed to review the facts of the case.

Tri Thep remains hospitalized at Ban Phai Hospital awaiting doctor's clearance to return home, after which he plans to file a formal complaint with police.

Thailand approved emergency loan funds for a tourism support program aiding small operators hit by Middle East conflicts, though a second phase requires further government review.

Thailand Tourism Plus Program Approved to Use Emergency Loan Funds
9 Aug Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister's Office Minister Praradorn Pattananantkul confirmed that the "Thailand Travel Thailand Plus" program's use of emergency borrowing authority under the 2025 decree is appropriate, as it aims to support small tourism operators affected by Middle East hostilities. He said the program meets emergency-use criteria because small tourism businesses have been directly impacted by foreign conflicts, and participants must meet clear eligibility requirements.

However, Phase 2 of the "Thai Help Thai Plus" program requires final decision and clarity from Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithadprasan and the Finance Minister, as the Finance Ministry oversees the project evaluation. Officials requested that Phase 1 be completed first before assessing whether Phase 2 is needed, given that the regional conflict situation remains ongoing.
