DSI Reveals News Anchor Donated 1.5 Million to Foundation
DSI revealed that famous Thai news anchor Songkan Kamnoetphon donated about 1.5 million baht to the Kan Chompong Help Fight Foundation and to the personal account of Kanthasat Phongphaibulwetch, with additional tens of thousands baht in smaller contributions. The anchor met with investigators to explain the donations, saying they were meant to help people in need. Authorities are reviewing the transactions for possible misuse and may treat the donor as a victim if fraud is found.
DSI officials said that on October 9, 2026, news anchor Songkan Kamnoetphon met with investigators from the Justice Affairs Investigation Unit to explain his donations. He told them he had contributed roughly 1.5 million baht to the Kan Chompong Help Fight Foundation and to the personal bank account of Kanthasat Phongphaibulwetch, known as Kan Chompong. Songkan added that there are also various smaller donations in the tens of thousands baht that he made for field relief work and purchasing relief packages, as indicated by Kan Chompong. He said his intention was to help people in distress and he trusted Kan Chompong to use the money appropriately.
Investigators also asked about the nature of Songkan’s relationship with Kan Chompong, how they met, and the details of the donations. They said they will compare witness statements with evidence, examine timelines, bank transfer slips, and other activities. If the DSI later accepts the case as a special investigation due to suspected misuse of donated funds, the donor could be considered a victim and may file a complaint, depending on the amount of any loss and whether the foundation acted intentionally. Authorities must determine any wrongdoing before taking action, ensuring fairness for all parties.
So far, investigators have taken statements from more than ten witnesses, including donors and people close to Kan Chompong. They plan to summon Kan Chompong for further questioning to verify whether the foundation or its associates used the money for purposes other than those stated, or for unrelated activities that could constitute fraud or deception against donors.
