On July 22, 2025, Election Commission Chairman Nrong Klunvarin addressed the progress of fraud investigations into the national election day, stating that the review is proceeding on schedule with four more rounds of consideration remaining and more than half the work already completed. When asked whether any political figures identified by the Thai Raksa Chart Party and iLaw in their disclosure of Surat Thani provincial election data are included in the commission's investigations, Nrong said he did not know what information they had released but assured the public that the commission is reviewing all cases based on evidence and on schedule, with nothing to worry about. Regarding criticism and pressure from political parties and civil society groups calling for all cases to be referred to court, Nrong emphasized that the commission considers cases based on evidence alone and does not view such pressure as interference, stating the commission is simply fulfilling its duty and will do so to the best of its ability. On the matter of the performance evaluation of Election Commission Secretary-General Sawaeng Boonmee for 2024, the chairman laughed and said to ask the secretary-general directly, while Sawaeng declined to comment.

67-Year-Old Trat Bus Route Ends This Month

Trat's 67-year-old BKBS bus service to Bangkok closes at month's end due to low ridership and rising costs, leaving elderly residents and welfare cardholders without affordable transport options.

67-Year-Old Trat Bus Route Ends This Month
22 Jul Khaosod

Trat province will lose a key public transport link when the Transport Company Limited (BKBS) Trat-Bangkok (Mochit) route shuts down by month's end, closing a legendary 67-year-old service. The closure has created unavoidable concerns among residents regarding daily life and community economics, though other BKBS minibus services like Chiang Chai will continue operating.

BKBS Trat ticket seller Nonghlak revealed the current service departs Bangkok's Mochit station at 7:30 a.m. and leaves Trat at 9:30 a.m., with a nighttime departure at 10:30 p.m. previously canceled during the COVID-19 period. The final run will operate on July 31, 2025.

The route closure stems from unsustainable economics, with ridership averaging only 10 passengers from the originating point and 4-5 additional pickups at Saen Tung station, against fixed daily operating costs of 5,000 baht per trip. The suspension will particularly impact elderly residents using state welfare benefits and passengers with heavy luggage who find minibuses inconvenient.

Nonghlak, who has worked at the station for 10 years, said she faces relocation challenges if transferred to Bangkok or Chiang Buri headquarters. Local songthaew driver Yongyut noted the route's closure means losing a customer base and expressed concern for elderly passengers aged 70-80 who will struggle with minibus travel, especially since tour operator Chiang Chai runs only one daily service.

Passenger Naresil countered that the service is a basic public welfare that should not be eliminated. Despite many choosing faster minibuses, the BKBS route is essential for welfare card holders and seniors who receive half-price fares—a crucial benefit allowing limited budgets to stretch further. Even if the service loses money, maintaining at least one vehicle would help those unable to afford full fares. Minibus operator Suranpong acknowledged increased ridership if BKBS closes but personally hopes the service continues, providing travel options for tourists and Trat residents.

Thai Deputy PM Denies Link to Parliament Vote-Buying Scandal
22 Jul Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak gave an interview on July 22, 2025 at Government House regarding the vote-buying case investigation, which identified nine individuals connected to the scandal, including himself. He stated that when his name was linked to parliamentary vote-buying allegations—which he understands to be unlawful—he will pursue legal processes to defend his rights and seek damages if he has been harmed. When asked whether publicly naming him constituted a political attack, Somkid said he did not wish to characterize it that way, but acknowledged that those who disclosed the names should exercise clarity when making allegations without confirmed facts. He noted that political criticism of public figures is routine, but when actual harm results, legal recourse is necessary to vindicate legitimate rights. He stated that Bhumjaithai Party's legal team is already pursuing the matter. When asked whether he would file a personal complaint or leave it to the party's legal team, Somkid explained that since multiple government ministers were named, he needs to consult with them, as most of those implicated hold ministerial positions. He emphasized that as a politician and public figure, he accepts being subject to criticism, but any legal action must first establish clear evidence of how the allegations harmed him, including the method and capacity in which they were made, and whether the legal elements of a lawsuit are present.

The Po Teck Tung Foundation is reducing social inequality and creating equal livelihood opportunities for Phisanulok residents by distributing vocational equipment to the poor, providing wheelchairs to people with disabilities, and deploying mobile medical units for free community services. Led by Supharat Sambatyjarunthai, Naowarat Wansiree, and Pithakphand Tugchit, foundation teams delivered vocational equipment worth 667,800 baht to 34 individuals—women, men, single fathers, and LGBTQ+ people—lacking resources to start businesses. The foundation also distributed 10 wheelchairs valued at 30,000 baht and 20 student bicycles worth 25,800 baht, bringing total assistance to 726,300 baht.

Additionally, the foundation deployed community health units with volunteer doctors, paramedics, rescue teams, and volunteers to provide free eyeglasses, haircuts, and youth entertainment activities. The ceremony took place at Wat Phothitong in Bang Rakam District, Phisanulok Province, with participation from local officials and community leaders.

Supharat Sambatyjarunthai revealed that the Women and Family Employment Promotion Project aims to equip economically disadvantaged individuals with vocational tools and skills. The foundation coordinated with 12 women and family development learning centers across Thailand—Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla, Suratthani, Sisaket, Khon Kaen, Lamphun, Lampang, Chiang Rai, and Phisanulok—to identify and support beneficiaries. The foundation hopes this initiative will reduce social inequality, create sustainable income, and support families long-term.

Over 116 years, Po Teck Tung Foundation has expanded programs to improve quality of life across communities regardless of race or religion, serving as a comprehensive charitable organization dedicated to its mission: "Save lives, preserve lives, build lives."

Defense Ministry Eyes Closing Loopholes After Activist Avoids Draft

Thailand's Defense Minister pledged to close legal loopholes in military conscription rules after activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisarn avoided the draft through civil disobedience, citing fairness concerns across all income levels.

Defense Ministry Eyes Closing Loopholes After Activist Avoids Draft
22 Jul Khaosod

On July 22, 2025, at the Avani Plus Riverside Bangkok hotel, Defense Minister General Adul Bunyathaveechai expressed concern that Thai men might follow the example of political activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisarn, who refused to participate in mandatory military conscription in an act of civil disobedience. A court sentenced Netiwit to six months imprisonment, but suspended the sentence for one year because he had no prior criminal convictions.

Adul stated that legal frameworks and regulations already exist, but the government must identify and address any gaps in the law to ensure fairness. He stressed that all Thai men at age 21 must undergo military conscription screening, noting that he has presided over such screenings nine times and loopholes are rare. Student deferments are already available through established processes.

"We believe there may be loopholes, but we will find ways to close them to ensure fairness for all Thai men, regardless of wealth or poverty," Adul said. He noted that government policy emphasizes promoting volunteer military service. Thailand requires approximately 80,000 to 90,000 soldiers annually, and there are already volunteers and online recruits. If recruitment targets are met, compulsory conscription may not be necessary. When asked whether legal knowledge could be used to exploit draft loopholes and create inequality, Adul acknowledged this was an issue that requires discussion and remedial action.

Elderly Man Loses Welfare Card Over Two Defunct Motorcycles

A 72-year-old from Nakhon Ratchasima lost his state welfare benefits because two non-functional motorcycles over 30 years old remain registered in his name, despite being unable to work due to cerebral artery narrowing.

Elderly Man Loses Welfare Card Over Two Defunct Motorcycles
22 Jul Khaosod

Laan Hanchawech, 72, from Nong Sada village in Nakhon Ratchasima province, has been denied state welfare benefits despite suffering from cerebral artery narrowing that has rendered him unable to work. The denial came solely because his name appears on the registration of two motorcycles, each over 30 years old and in such poor condition they cannot be used. The motorcycles have not been deregistered, though Laan has not operated them in years.

Laan worked as a welder and motorcycle taxi driver for decades to support his family, but stopped all work five years ago when his health condition worsened. His daughter forbids him from driving due to safety concerns. He was previously receiving state welfare benefits and says the assistance is vital to his monthly survival. Though heartbroken by the loss of benefits, Laan emphasizes that the two motorcycles are merely registered in his name and are completely non-functional.

Laan has appealed to the government and relevant agencies to visit and verify his actual living conditions, arguing that welfare eligibility should be based on genuine financial hardship rather than mere asset registry entries. He hopes to file a formal appeal once his daughter can arrange transportation to the distant office. With profound sadness, he asks: "Before I die, could the government please restore my welfare benefits just one more time?"

Proud Parents Watch Daughter Debut as Full Artist
22 Jul Khaosod

LOVEiS Entertainment held the official TACE DEBUT STAGE at Paragon Hall for the company's first new girl group, which includes Leah, the accomplished daughter of actors Peck Saketchai and Tanya Tanyares. The couple attended to support their daughter on the important day and spoke to media afterward about their feelings watching her become a full-fledged artist. Peck said they were thrilled and nervous because they didn't know beforehand what songs she would sing or how she would dance. Tanya added that Leah kept everything a surprise and didn't spoil any details. When asked if there were tears, Peck joked that Leah always looks stern and doesn't show much emotion. Notably, during her thank-you speech, Leah mentioned her family first, though Peck playfully complained she didn't specifically thank him. Tanya revealed Leah acknowledged how her father cooks her meals every time she comes home—particularly homemade pasta—to help her gain weight, as she is naturally thinner than other members. Peck expressed how proud he felt when Leah, who had previously told him she was exhausted and couldn't continue, managed to push through and perform so well. He gave her a perfect 10 out of 10 for her dancing across all songs. The moment that impressed everyone most was when Leah performed a dramatic leg split on stage, which moved Peck emotionally. Tanya became tearful watching her daughter, saying she felt emotional on behalf of all the girls and their parents because of how hard they had trained to reach this day. The parents praised the entertainment company for supporting them so well. When asked if it felt like sending a child to school on the first day, Tanya said it was similar to the day they dropped her off at school. Peck noted this is just the beginning and they look forward to watching her climb higher. Tanya closed by saying they will support whatever their daughter wants to do, with the entire extended family backing her dreams.

Thailand Fast-Tracks Investment In Missing Transport Links

Thailand is fast-tracking investment in missing transport links, including rail and road connections, to reduce logistics costs and strengthen its role as a regional trade hub amid global shipping uncertainties.

Thailand Fast-Tracks Investment In Missing Transport Links
22 Jul Khaosod

On July 22, 2026, government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek revealed that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed relevant agencies to review the Land Bridge development plan and accelerate investment in immediately executable infrastructure projects, particularly filling gaps in incomplete transport networks—both rail and road systems—to enhance shipping efficiency, trade, and investment.

The Prime Minister noted that Thailand holds a geographic advantage as a regional hub, and completing missing transport links would accelerate cargo movement, reduce logistics costs, strengthen competitiveness, and attract investment without waiting for large-scale projects to finish. Government officials emphasized that global shipping uncertainties, particularly stemming from Middle East conflicts, reinforce the need for seamlessly connected multimodal transport networks—road, rail, sea, and air—to ensure long-term supply chain security.

A key government priority is filling Missing Links along the North–South Economic Corridor connecting China, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. During discussions with China's Premier, the Thai PM expressed intent to accelerate rail connections from Chiang Khong District in Chiang Rai Province to Nathy in Laos and onward to Mohan in China, creating a complete regional rail network to improve freight transport and strengthen international trade capacity.

For immediate implementation, the government will develop Ranong Port and link it to Chumphon via rail and road systems to offer alternative shipping routes between the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand. Officials will assess feasibility, investment models, and economic returns before determining next steps. "The government prioritizes practical, quick-impact investments that tangibly benefit people and businesses," Ratchada stated. "Filling transport gaps will reduce logistics costs, expand trade and investment opportunities, and elevate Thailand's role as a regional connectivity hub while studying large-scale projects for maximum national benefit."
