A 30-year-old man named Phongkorn traveled by bus from Chaiyaphum starting at 10 a.m., arriving at Mo Chit around 3 p.m. He took a taxi to a shopping mall hoping to sell a Buddha amulet to raise 700,000-800,000 baht for his grandmother's stage-three cancer treatment. When a Buddha amulet expert refused to buy it, Phongkorn became discouraged and headed downstairs. Passing a gold jewelry shop on the ground floor, he decided to ask to view some 10-baht gold necklaces. As the shop employee handed him one to inspect, he seized the opportunity to snatch the necklace and run toward the exit. Security guards caught him at the corner before he could escape. Police from Rattanathibesorn Station arrived and detained Phongkorn, finding two gold necklaces weighing 10 baht each, broken from the snatching. During interrogation, Phongkorn confessed to the crime, admitting that desperation over his grandmother's illness drove him to commit the theft. He accepted responsibility for his actions.

Thai Education Office Defends Laos Tour as Voluntary, Private Funded
20 Jul Khaosod

The Surin Secondary Education Area Office has defended a planned Laos tour costing 8,500 baht per person, stating that all participants are volunteering and funding the trip themselves with no connection to government budget. An anti-corruption Facebook page had alleged that school principals were being required to join the tour, scheduled for July 24-27, and were being told not to use official travel authorization, with each person paying 8,500 baht.

Surin SEAO director Chavalit Jencharin clarified that the activity is not an official government function but rather an event organized by the Surin Secondary School Administrators Association and uses no state budget. As a result, the education office does not permit official travel documentation; administrators wishing to participate must use personal leave. The office is currently processing leave requests and has not yet approved anyone to travel, as all applications must be carefully reviewed according to civil service regulations.

Bunsak Boonchoong, chairman of the Surin Secondary School Administrators Association, explained that the trip is organized to honor retired school administrators and is a tradition the association has maintained for many years. All participants are volunteers with no coercion involved, and each person contributes 8,500 baht in personal funds with no involvement of government budget.

Patipol Jamlang, one of the participating school principals, stated that the invitation letter is merely a request for cooperation and does not mandate or force any administrator's participation. He called on the public to hear from all sides before forming judgments or criticism.

A burglar stole food and valuables from a steakhouse in Chonburi, then sat outside drinking beer before fleeing—but left his wallet with driver's license behind, giving police clear evidence for prosecution.

Burglar Leaves Driver's License After Stealing From Steakhouse
20 Jul Khaosod

A burglar methodically stole items from a steakhouse in Chonburi, then sat outside drinking beer until intoxicated before fleeing the scene—but forgot his driver's license behind. On July 20, 2026, reporters visited Hia Tee Sizzling Steakhouse Branch 8 in Muang District, Chonburi Province, following a report that a suspect had broken in and stolen food and valuables from the restaurant. CCTV footage captured the suspect's actions in detail.

Security camera footage showed the suspect entering through a window, then casually selecting various items. He grabbed beer, sausages, and chicken nuggets, then sat outside the restaurant eating and drinking as if he were a normal customer before attempting to escape with multiple food items, beverages, and other stolen property. However, the suspect left behind a wallet containing his driver's license and empty beer bottles at the scene, which became strong evidence for police to pursue and prosecute the case.

Krit, 53-year-old shop owner, revealed that preliminary checks showed the missing items included one bottle of coke, three bottles of orange juice, three Singha beers, two packs of sausages, one bag of chicken nuggets, two bottles of red syrup, one mobile phone, one baseball cap, and several hundred baht in change. He appealed to the suspect, asking fellow Thais not to steal and suggesting that anyone in genuine need should simply ask directly—the shop would be willing to provide.

Songkhla University Launches Disaster Management Model

Songkhla University launched the "Hat Yai Model Plus" project with 30+ partner organizations to improve flood preparedness in Hat Yai District through an integrated early warning system, smart shelters, and community strengthening programs.

Songkhla University Launches Disaster Management Model
20 Jul Khaosod

Prince of Songkhla University has signed research cooperation agreements with over 30 partner organizations under the "Hat Yai Model Plus" project to integrate knowledge, research, technology, and innovation to enhance flood preparedness in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, under the concept "Countdown to a Disaster-Ready Hat Yai."

The ceremony on July 20 was presided over by Jirawat Maneechodh, Deputy Governor of Songkhla Province, alongside university rector Asst. Prof. Dr. Niwat Kaeoprab, Prof. Dr. Komkrit Leksakul of the Office of the Committee for the Promotion of Science, Research and Innovation, and officials from government agencies, private sector, local government organizations, researchers, and media.

Hat Yai District serves as an economic, educational, medical, transport, and tourism hub for Southern Thailand, but faces recurring flooding from geography, urban expansion, and climate change impacts. Past floods have revealed gaps in warning systems, data coordination, interagency communication, and community preparedness.

The Hat Yai Model Plus uses science, research, and innovation to improve integrated disaster management through four main initiatives: (1) a real-time flood early warning system integrating rainfall forecasting, hydrological modeling, and artificial intelligence for the Klang U-Taphao watershed; (2) a public health information network center for emergency and disaster management; (3) development of smart shelters for flood response; and (4) community strengthening programs.

All projects receive support from the Office of the Committee for the Promotion of Science, Research and Innovation (PCSRI) and funding from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).

The cooperation agreement represents a joint commitment by over 30 government, academic, local government, water resource, disaster prevention, public health, business, industry, and community organizations. Rather than a symbolic signing, it represents genuine integration through shared data, coordinated planning, system development, resource exchange, and cross-sector collaboration to build an efficient and sustainable flood management system.

Man Found Dead in Rice Field With Head Injuries
20 Jul Khaosod

At 3:00 p.m. on July 20, 2026, Deputy Superintendent Piyaporn Potthiyong of Mae Ka Police Station in Phayao received a report of a deceased man found in a rice field in the Champahwai area, Tampol Champahwai, Muang District, Phayao Province. He immediately proceeded to the scene with a forensic pathologist from Phayao Hospital, provincial evidence specialists, Mae Ka Police investigators, and local rescue personnel.

The body was found lying face-up in the middle of a rice field, wearing a short-sleeved shirt, shorts, and white Converse sneakers. The corpse was bloated, and the face and torso had been severely decomposed by maggots, making facial identification impossible. Items found in the shirt pocket included cigarette packages, methamphetamine pills, and a lighter. The right hand bore a spider tattoo, while the right shoulder was tattooed with the word "Father" and the left shoulder with "Mother." Medical examination revealed what appeared to be blunt-force injuries to the head at four points, with death estimated to have occurred at least three days prior.

According to the village headman, the deceased is believed to be a 55-year-old man named Lah from Tambon Champahwai, who was a habitual drinker and had been missing from home for approximately three days without any missing person report filed by relatives. The match is considered highly probable but awaits official identification confirmation.

Police from Mae Ka Station are currently gathering evidence, conducting investigations, and awaiting detailed autopsy results to determine whether the death was caused by homicide or other factors before proceeding with legal action.
