Flood Traps Woman in Mud, Causes Drowning in Chiang Mai
A flash flood caused by heavy rain trapped a 54‑year‑old woman in mud, preventing her escape and leading to her drowning in a rice field near the Huay Chan stream in Kalayaniwattana district, Chiang Mai. At 2:00 PM on October 5, 2024, officials from the Chiang Mai Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office’s Samoeng branch received a report of a drowning victim in Moo 3, Ban Wat Chan, Tambon Ban Chan, Kalayaniwattana district. Responding officials, including the district deputy clerk for security, the Tambon Ban Chan mayor, administrative staff, Wat Chan Hospital personnel, and police, arrived at the scene. The incident occurred in a rice field beside the Huay Chan stream. The victim, Thai national Kesarin, aged 54, was found dead. Preliminary investigation showed that heavy rain began at 1:00 PM in Kalayaniwattana district, causing a flash flood that swept across agricultural land and carried the woman into the water. She could not flee because her legs were trapped in mud.
