Founder's Daughter Defends Temple Land Donation

The founder's daughter defended her family's land donation to a Khon Kaen temple, arguing that reclaiming consecrated ground for religious purposes would betray her father's charitable legacy.

Founder's Daughter Defends Temple Land Donation

On August 16, 2025, at 3:30 p.m., Suphaphorn Bunpromma, 53, organized the distribution of pad Thai meals at Wat Pa Adulyaram on Kalpapruek Road in Khon Kaen municipality. The meals were given to police, officials, media, and community volunteers who had gathered to clean the temple grounds and offer moral support to Abbot Phrakru Adulsen Nithes amid ongoing security precautions.

Suphaphorn, known as Pee Aiw, is the daughter of Intharee, the temple's first lay custodian and named founder. She explained that her family moved to the area and purchased land from the village headman Heang Phimsri at the time. After the land purchase, the temple was formally established. Heang then became a resident of the temple, while Intharee regularly performed merit-making there. The abbot at the time, Luang Pho Phai, invited Intharee to help manage temple affairs because Intharee had previously served as a sub-district administrator at another temple in Sakon Nakhon province. Intharee began handling temple finances and administrative matters.

Suphaphorn said that when Heang's descendants later demanded the return of the temple land, she felt this was inappropriate. She stressed that since her father had donated the land for the temple's benefit, the family should accept this donation with respect and continue his charitable legacy. She recalled that her father, who was strict about Buddhist principles, had previously discussed land return demands with Heang's family and questioned whether it was right to reclaim land given for a religious purpose. She emphasized that her father, as the temple's first lay custodian, understood the proper handling of temple finances and records, and had urged the abbot to keep documentation secure in case problems arose—a concern that she says has now come to pass.

Four Foreign Tourists Injured When Large Tree Falls at Ayutthaya Temple

Four Foreign Tourists Injured When Large Tree Falls at Ayutthaya Temple
2d ago Khaosod

A large tree suddenly collapsed onto a group of Spanish tourists at Wat Phra Si Sanphet in Ayutthaya Historical Park on August 16 at 12:30 p.m., injuring four people. One male tourist, identified as Javier de Esteban Lucea, 55, suffered serious injuries including a fractured right rib and two broken left leg bones, while three female tourists sustained minor injuries. All victims are Spanish nationals who were part of a group of about 15 tourists visiting the ancient site when the tree fell without warning.

Authorities from the Ayutthaya Community Foundation and Ayutthaya Hospital immediately responded, clearing debris from the victims and transporting them for medical care. Initial investigation suggests the tree may have been old and suffered internal decay or hollow areas at the base, preventing it from supporting its own weight. There was no rain or strong wind at the time of the incident, so structural deterioration is the suspected cause, pending confirmation from relevant authorities.

Following the incident, officials used chainsaws to remove branches and relocate the fallen tree to clear the area and improve safety for visitors. Ayutthaya Provincial Governor Chawanin Wongsakdichirakan visited the injured tourists at the hospital and directed related agencies to provide close care and support. He instructed the provincial tourism and sports office to coordinate with tourist police and ordered the hospital director to provide full medical treatment. To prevent similar incidents, he also ordered the Ayutthaya Historical Park and the provincial Natural Resources and Environment Office to deploy arborists to inspect and assess the structural integrity of all large trees throughout archaeological sites across Ayutthaya Province.

Conservationists Warn AI-Generated Wildlife Images Distort Reality

AI-generated wildlife images are going viral on social media, misleading the public about animal behavior and potentially causing dangerous human-wildlife interactions. Experts warn the realistic fake content undermines conservation efforts

Conservationists Warn AI-Generated Wildlife Images Distort Reality
2d ago Khaosod

A black-and-white image appeared to show an orangutan cradling an endangered clouded leopard deep in the forests of Sabah, Malaysia — but the viral photo was not only improbable, it was fake, generated by artificial intelligence. This is part of a broader trend of AI-created wildlife images that experts warn poses risks to both animals and humans.

AFP fact-checkers have identified numerous synthetic images of similar quality, ranging from an elephant climbing a tree to escape flooding in Myanmar to a pink dolphin leaping from water in the Philippines. These images are typically accompanied by heartwarming narratives and shared widely across multiple languages on platforms including Facebook, TikTok, and X.

While such images may seem like harmless feel-good content rather than dangerous misinformation, experts caution that highly realistic AI-generated wildlife images depicting animals with pet-like or even human-like behavior can distort public perception of wildlife and undermine conservation efforts.

"This misunderstanding can cause people to approach animals too closely or interact with them in unsafe ways," said Jose Guerrero-Casado, a zoology professor at the University of Cordoba in Spain. He cited a widely reported incident in Xinjiang in northwestern China last January, when a woman was attacked by a rare snow leopard after attempting to get close to photograph it.

China's forestry department increased patrols in the area following the incident and warned the public to maintain safe distances when encountering wildlife.

Conservationists note that AI images portraying wildlife as cute or endearing make it harder for social media users to distinguish fact from fiction and may encourage inappropriate use of wildlife.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and TikTok now require users to label AI-generated or significantly altered realistic images. Both platforms say they have tools to automatically detect and label AI-generated content. However, many wildlife posts remain unlabeled despite creators noting in captions that the images are artificial.

On August 16, Chiang Mai Governor Ratphol Naradisorn assigned Deputy Governor Sivakorn Buapong to inspect flash flood conditions at key tourism sites in Mae Rim District, particularly at Mae Sa and Tad Mok waterfalls. Relevant agencies were instructed to prepare for emergency situations and strengthen safety measures for residents and visitors during the rainy season.

The inspection was conducted with District Administrator Prasertsakdi Butsa, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park Assistant Director Kantthorn Songrueks, and other concerned officials who monitored and reported on field conditions.

The deputy governor directed staff to prioritize tourist safety while continuously tracking water and weather conditions. Personnel, equipment, and rescue forces are on standby to respond promptly to any flash flooding or emergencies affecting the public and visitors.

Authorities also stressed the need to verify that warning systems, alert devices, and rescue equipment are fully operational and effective. Staff have been instructed to work with caution and conduct close situation assessments, particularly during heavy rain or rapid water level increases.

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park continues to maintain the temporary closure of Mae Sa Waterfall in the interest of visitor safety until flood conditions and site conditions return to normal. The public and visitors are urged to monitor official announcements closely and strictly follow staff instructions.

Court Hands 5-Year Sentence in MP Shooting Case

Court Hands 5-Year Sentence in MP Shooting Case
2d ago Khaosod

Narathiwat Provincial Court has convicted a defendant of destroying a government vehicle belonging to the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) to eliminate evidence in the shooting of Kamalsakdi Liawmaow, a Pheu Thai Party MP from Narathiwat. The court determined the defendant guilty of assisting others in avoiding punishment and destroying, concealing, or losing evidence of the crime, as well as receiving stolen goods for profit. The court initially sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment, but reduced the sentence by half to 5 years after he confessed, with no suspension of sentence. He must also pay compensation to ISOC, which was also a victim. This constitutes significant progress in the assassination attempt on Kamalsakdi Liawmaow. The shooting occurred in March 2025 while the MP was traveling home in Bacho district, Narathiwat. Official investigations have resulted in multiple arrests, comprising five active perpetrators and two suspected masterminds. The perpetrators include former rangers and navy personnel, while the masterminds include an ISOC military officer who allegedly provided the government vehicle used in the attack. Notably, military firearms under state control were also used in the incident. Prime Minister Anuthm Charnweerakul has issued strict orders to control firearms following the school shooting incident that resulted in numerous deaths. Beyond controlling civilian and government official firearms, the premier has also directed relevant agencies to intensify efforts against illegal weapons. However, the southern border situation presents another critical concern requiring serious government attention regarding how to prevent government firearms from being used for violence, as exemplified by the MP case. Therefore, in addition to illegal weapons and civilian-owned firearms, government weapons should also be subject to rigorous inspection.

Temple Warns of Land Transfer Scam Demanding Millions

The abbot of Wat Pa Adulyaram in Khon Kaen warned the public against scammers falsely claiming the temple needs millions of baht for a land transfer, urging anyone approached to report such demands to police immediately.

On August 16, Kritssakorn Sanitsaktdi, inspector of the National Buddhism Office, along with Netthitip Charoenjai, director of the Khon Kaen Provincial Buddhism Office, visited Phra Kru Adulya Sannithet, abbot of Wat Pa Adulyaram on Kalprathet Road in Kangsadal community, Khon Kaen Municipality. The meeting was held privately with only the temple's monks and national Buddhism office staff present, with no media or relatives allowed to attend.

The abbot expressed concern about fraudsters using the temple's land transfer case to solicit money from the public. He stated that the temple does not have donation boxes and only accepts contributions through bank QR codes. "Some people have told me that transferring the 21 acres from an individual to the temple's name requires millions of baht, which is completely false," the abbot said. "I have never authorized anyone to collect money on behalf of the temple for land transfer costs. If anyone approaches you demanding such payment, please report them to police immediately. The temple has no involvement in any money collection scheme."

The abbot confirmed that the temple will proceed with the land transfer through proper legal channels and court processes. He asked the public to be patient, as land transfers can take many years to complete, and urged people not to pressure government officials, as they are already working diligently on the matter.

Nakhon Ratchasima — A 52-year-old man clearing weeds in a rice field collapsed from heat stroke in extreme weather, lost consciousness, fell backward, and died in an irrigation canal. His body showed no signs of injury or assault.

On August 16, Huai Hook 31 rescue unit in Kham Sakae Kaeng received a report from Investigator Tiwakorn Chaemglang of Kham Sakae Kaeng Police Station that a person had been found dead in a rice field in Nong Durian village, Non Muang subdistrict, Kham Sakae Kaeng district, Nakhon Ratchasima. Rescue teams were dispatched to investigate, and since the scene was in the middle of a rice field, they parked their vehicle on the roadside and carried rescue equipment and a stretcher on foot.

Upon arrival, rescue workers found the body of a man wearing black long pants and a blue long-sleeved shirt lying submerged in an irrigation canal, with a waist bag nearby. Police retrieved the body from the water for examination, with police officers, local officials, and residents present to observe.

When police searched the waist bag, they found a mobile phone and an identity card belonging to the deceased, identified as Boon, 52 years old, from Moo 3, Lung Takian subdistrict, Huai Thalaeng district, Nakhon Ratchasima. The body bore no wounds or marks of assault.

Family members said the deceased had gone out in the morning to clear weeds in the rice field but failed to return home. Relatives went to search for him and found him dead at the scene, then immediately informed the village headman, who contacted police and rescue units.

Initial investigation suggests the man died from heat stroke brought on by extreme heat and humid weather conditions, which caused him to lose consciousness and fall into the irrigation canal. Unable to help himself and with no one passing by to assist, he died. His body has been sent to a forensic pathologist at Kham Sakae Kaeng Hospital for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death before his family is notified to collect the body for funeral rites.

Election Commission Faces Pressure Over Senate Vote-Buying Probe
2d ago Khaosod

The investigation into alleged vote-buying in the Senate election has ballooned, with evidence mounting steadily. Documentation includes organized vote-buying operations, video recordings of the incidents, and ballot irregularities so obvious they would be visible from Mars. The question now is whether Election Commission board members will recognize these anomalies and refer the matter to the Supreme Court to ensure transparency, fairness, and justice according to the Commission's own motto—or whether they will ignore mathematical impossibilities and dismiss everything by rejecting complaints, allowing it all to pass through. We will soon see which path they choose.

The widening scope stems from investigators discovering that an Election Commission official received 860,000 baht from an associate of a prominent Amnat Charoen politician through 13 separate money transfers. This naturally raised questions about whether the payments connect to Senate vote-buying. The Commission's explanation, however, proved even more startling: they claimed the payments are unrelated to the Senate election but instead occurred during the 2566 House election, and the official has since been dismissed with the matter referred to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

Yet examining the timeline reveals something striking: those transfers occurred precisely when the Election Commission was filing fraud complaints against Amnat Charoen House candidates. This suggests the two matters are clearly connected. The source of the money from 13 transfers is evident, so why has there been no investigation into whether it relates to House election fraud or official bribery?

Moreover, Election Commission member Sitthichote Intharawiseth stated the Commission has not yet re-examined Amnat Charoen's House ballots because the evidence does not sufficiently connect to them. This raises a troubling question: if money transfers from a politician's associate through 13 transactions are insufficient evidence, what level of proof does the Commission require to perform its duties?

This matter will not end easily, despite criticism that the Commission is attempting to limit accountability to the official who was dismissed. If this nation cannot trust the institution governing electoral rules and screening electoral integrity, society will lose faith and face inevitable collapse. If the Election Commission wishes to avoid being remembered in history for failings of conscience, it must provide answers now. Do not let this fade into silence with the wind.

Luxury Hybrid Car Catches Fire During Overnight Charging

A luxury hybrid car worth over 1 million baht caught fire while charging overnight at a Pathum Thani townhouse, with firefighters containing the blaze within an hour and preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.

Luxury Hybrid Car Catches Fire During Overnight Charging

PATHUM THANI — A luxury hybrid car worth more than 1 million baht caught fire after being left charging overnight at a townhouse in Pathum Thani province. The incident was reported to the disaster prevention and mitigation unit of Khlong Sam Subdistrict Administrative Organisation in Khlong Luang district at a housing estate in Khlong Sam subdistrict.

Dr. Wirasak Hadda, chief executive of the Khlong Sam Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, arrived at the scene with two fire engines. The property was a two-storey townhouse. Firefighters found a white sedan parked in front of the house with flames rapidly spreading inside the passenger compartment. Firefighters immediately sprayed water to prevent the flames from spreading to the house and neighbouring properties. The blaze was brought under control within about one hour. The driver's compartment was severely damaged by the fire.

The 36-year-old owner said he returned home at around 22:00 on Aug. 15 and plugged the car in to charge before going to bed. At around 08:00 the following morning, a security guard rang the doorbell. When he went downstairs, he noticed smoke coming from the car, although it was not yet heavy. He immediately unplugged the charger, grabbed the car keys and opened the vehicle's door. A large amount of smoke then poured out, as seen in footage of the incident.

The owner initially suspected that excessive heat from the hybrid battery may have caused the fire, but said the exact cause remained unknown. It was unclear whether the incident was caused by a deteriorating battery or a system malfunction. The vehicle's dashboard had displayed no warning signs or error messages before the incident.

The owner said the situation could have been much worse if the fire had spread to the house. He credited his quick response and the firefighters' arrival for limiting the damage to the vehicle. The second-hand car was purchased for slightly more than 1 million baht and had been used by him for about two years. Including its previous owner's use, the vehicle was estimated to be about four years old.

The owner said he had already notified his insurer, as the vehicle was covered by comprehensive insurance. The insurance company had contacted him and begun handling the case. As the incident occurred on a Sunday, he had not yet been able to contact the vehicle's service centre to arrange an inspection and determine the cause of the fire and extent of the damage.

He said he was unlikely to feel comfortable driving the car again, even if it was deemed repairable. He would wait for an assessment to determine whether the vehicle could safely be repaired and returned to service. The owner said he had maintained the vehicle normally, taking it to a service centre for annual inspections and regular scheduled maintenance. He also understood that the vehicle was equipped with warning systems that should display an error message if a problem occurred with the hybrid system.
