Government Panel to Approve Household Solar Subsidy This Week
Thailand's cabinet is expected to approve a subsidy program this week aimed at helping households install rooftop solar panels, with funding administered jointly by state electricity providers and financial institutions. The exact subsidy amount has not yet been confirmed, with officials still discussing whether it will be around 50,000 baht per household or a different figure. The proposal is under review by multiple government agencies before final cabinet approval.
Thailand's loan screening board is set to decide this week on subsidy amounts for a household rooftop solar installation program. Jindaratana Viriyataveeakul, director of the Public Debt Management Office, announced that the loan expenditure screening committee will convene within the week to discuss a scheme designed to reduce the burden on citizens installing rooftop solar panels—a joint initiative of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Provincial Electricity Authority.
Under the preliminary plan, households installing rooftop solar would receive subsidies alongside financing from state-owned financial institutions. However, the exact subsidy amount remains undetermined and could differ from the previously reported 50,000 baht threshold. The proposal is currently being deliberated with the Ministry of Interior, both electricity authorities, and the Ministry of Finance before being finalized for the screening committee's consideration and eventual submission to the cabinet.
Separately, the Ministry of Transport is expected to propose a companion initiative to support the public transportation sector's transition to more efficient renewable energy sources for future consideration by the screening committee.
