Member of Parliament Vachrayapong Khoovichitsuwan of Saraburi from the Phum Jai Thai party posted on his personal Facebook: "Wearing shorts on your own legs while not bothering anyone else—I think that's better than those who wear government uniforms and then rob farmers' descendants to rig local exams." His post aligned with Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who as party leader also posted family vacation photos with the caption "Wearing shorts is fine...it's comfortable," along with the hashtag #JustKeepCool, in response to criticism directed at party elder Naewin Chidchob. Naewin faced online backlash after photos emerged showing him wearing shorts while attending a city shrine ceremony in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Motorcyclist Dies in Collision with Parked Pile-Driver Truck
3 Aug Khaosod

At approximately 5 a.m. on August 3, 2025, emergency responders were alerted to a crash on Huai Pong-Nong Bon Road in Rayong's Muang District. A motorcycle had collided with the rear of a parked pile-driver truck that was stopped on the roadside with warning markers. When rescue teams arrived, they found the motorcyclist unconscious and unresponsive, pinned beneath his bike. They immediately performed CPR and called for emergency medical support from Srinagarind Hospital, but the rider died before medical teams could arrive.

One detail that shocked responders and witnesses was that the victim's hand remained clenched tightly around a single 100-baht banknote. No identification documents were discovered on his body or motorcycle.

The truck driver explained that his brakes had suddenly failed at approximately 2 a.m. as he was transporting pile-driver stakes from a factory to a customer. He had parked safely on the roadside and placed wooden branches on the road as warning signals to alert other drivers. While resting in the cab waiting for a mechanic, he heard a loud crash and came down to find the motorcyclist critically injured with severe head bleeding. He immediately called emergency services.

Police from Huai Pong Station are investigating the incident, documenting evidence and questioning the truck driver. Authorities are also working to locate the victim's family to arrange proper funeral rites.

Nearly 980,000 Thais must complete identity verification for state welfare cards by August 31, with the government operating multiple service centers nationwide to prevent citizens from losing benefits.

Government Urges 980,000 to Verify State Welfare Card by August 31
3 Aug Khaosod

The government is rushing to assist nearly 980,000 new state welfare card holders in completing identity verification, while encouraging 5.2 million more to submit benefit review requests before the August 31 deadline. More than 4 million have already filed for benefit review.

Government spokesman Ratchada Thanadirek said the government prioritizes ensuring poor and disadvantaged citizens receive fair and universal welfare benefits. The government has coordinated all relevant agencies and accelerated support for identity verification, benefit review requests, and public outreach to help citizens meet the deadline.

Of the 9.5 million people who passed qualification screening, 6.3 million existing cardholders require no additional verification, while 3.1 million new cardholders must complete the e-KYC identity verification process.

As of August 2, 2026, more than 2.1 million new cardholders (69%) have completed verification, leaving approximately 980,000 (31%) still pending. The government is actively following up, promoting awareness, and facilitating the process to prevent people from losing their benefits. Those who failed initial qualification can appeal, with over 4.1 million appeals already filed (44%), while 5.2 million more remain eligible to appeal by August 31.

The government has set up multiple service channels including the "Thang Rat" and "Pao Tang" apps, project websites, five state banks, and 878 One Stop Service (OSS) centers across all districts to assist citizens, particularly the elderly, disabled, and vulnerable populations unable to access online services.

OSS centers will receive appeal requests and forward them to rights verification agencies in local districts and provinces, including district tax offices, district land offices, provincial transport offices, and provincial commerce offices. Village headmen and local government organizations are also mobilizing to conduct outreach in every community.

"The government is determined not to let citizens lose welfare benefits due to inconvenience or lack of information," Ratchada said. "We have prepared sufficient staff, systems, and service channels. We urge the 980,000 new cardholders who haven't verified their identity and the 5.2 million who haven't appealed to complete their applications by the deadline so everyone receives their full welfare entitlements."

PM Orders Flood-Risk Provinces to Prepare for Landslides and Flash Floods
3 Aug Khaosod

Deputy Government Spokesman Ploythale Laksameesangchan announced on August 3 that Prime Minister Anuthee Charnveerakul and the Interior Minister are focused on protecting public safety as August weather forecasts predict above-normal rainfall across the Western, Northern, Upper Northeastern, and Eastern regions. All provinces have been ordered to maintain vigilance and prepare response plans in advance, with contingency measures ready to minimize impact.

Weather assessments predict waves of 2–3 meters in the upper Andaman Sea from August 3–6, creating health system risks including hospital operations, emergency medical routes, and vulnerable populations. The Ministry of Public Health is closely monitoring the situation and directing all provincial health offices and health districts—especially in high-risk areas—to prepare for potential events. Preparations must include backup emergency medical pathways, backup electrical systems, fuel, water, oxygen, medications, blood supplies, and medical equipment with at least 72 hours of reserves. Contingency plans for patient transfers and care for vulnerable groups including dialysis patients, bedridden patients, oxygen users, pregnant women, and those on continuous medication are required.

Residents across Thailand, especially in the Northern, Upper Northeastern, Eastern, and western Southern regions, are warned of dangers from heavy to very heavy rainfall and accumulated precipitation that may cause flash floods, flash floods, and riverbank overflow, particularly in hillside and low-lying areas. Boat operators in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea should exercise caution; small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should remain ashore from August 3–9, while those in the Gulf of Thailand should stay ashore from August 7–9.

Singer An Waiyathya Dies After Motorcycle Falls Into Uncovered Drainage Pit

Folk singer An Waiyathya, 29, died after his motorcycle fell into an uncovered drainage pit in Songkhla Province; another person was injured at the same location, prompting complaints against the negligent contractor.

Singer An Waiyathya Dies After Motorcycle Falls Into Uncovered Drainage Pit
3 Aug Khaosod

Friends and family mourned singer and music video star An Waiyathya after he died when his motorcycle plunged into an open drainage construction pit. Another person was injured at the same location, and complaints have been filed against the contractor.

Waiyathya, 29, a southern Thailand folk singer, fell into the pit on a road in Moo 8, Tha Chang Subdistrict, Bang Klam District, Songkhla Province. On August 2, relatives and friends gathered at the accident site with white roses, food, and drinks to pay respects amid solemn atmosphere.

His sister, Supharat, spoke through tears, describing him as a caring middle brother who looked after her well and provided whatever she needed. He even gave up his bedroom for her. She said he normally helped their father with construction work and earned extra income singing and doing delivery rides. Supharat appealed to the contractor, asking why metal sheets were not placed over the pit after an earlier accident occurred there. She expressed that had repairs been made, her brother would still be alive, and questioned whether the contractor could undo the tragedy.

During the vigil, 26-year-old Sulkifhulee also arrived and showed fresh wounds on his right elbow, hip, and knee. He recounted that on July 28 around 7 p.m., while riding his motorcycle with one hand holding his son and momentarily glancing left, he collided with a metal sign panel and direction arrow with dim lighting before falling and nearly dropping into the pit. There was no metal sheet covering it at the time. After regaining consciousness, he recovered his motorcycle and rode home with his son, discovering injuries to his right elbow, hip, and knee. He later filed a report at Bang Klam Police Station.

Sulkifhulee observed that after his accident, the contractor left the area in its original condition with only a barrier and small warning sign, without placing metal sheets to cover the pit opening. He warned that unfamiliar road users or nighttime riders risked the same fate and called for government agencies overseeing construction contracts to seriously investigate the contractor's responsibility. He urged authorities to prevent further loss of life and property from such negligence.

Thai Democrat Leader Urges Five Steps to Combat Cross-Border Water Pollution

Democrat Party leader calls for five-step action plan as Thailand's PM meets Myanmar's military chief to address cross-border water pollution from gold mining operations affecting multiple rivers for nearly two years.

Thai Democrat Leader Urges Five Steps to Combat Cross-Border Water Pollution
3 Aug Khaosod

Democrat Party leader Natthapong Rueangpanya posted on Facebook on August 3, 2025, that Prime Minister Anuthon Chanyaveerakul is set to meet Myanmar's senior general Min Aung Hlaing early this month. Myanmar is identified as the upstream source where gold mining operations have been releasing toxic substances into the Kha, Sai, Rhuak, Mekong, Salween, and Kra Buri rivers, causing significant hardship to downstream Thai communities. Although the meeting may not immediately resolve public suffering, Natthapong stated it marks an important milestone in addressing a cross-border water pollution crisis now entering its second year. He outlined five expected outcomes from the leaders' discussion: (1) Myanmar must acknowledge pollution data across all international waterways and clearly take responsibility for the problem and its causes; (2) upgraded cooperation mechanisms with transparent monitoring, investigation, and concrete solutions, as previous Thai-Myanmar working groups have achieved no tangible progress due to weak data-gathering and cooperation frameworks; (3) defined boundaries of mining zones that risk polluting all river sources to control and improve water quality under the mechanisms in point two; (4) Thailand should communicate mineral law and customs measures that will restrict Myanmar ore imports if pollution issues are not seriously addressed; and (5) joint agreement to escalate cross-border water pollution solutions at international forums including ASEAN and the Mekong River Commission. Natthapong urged the government to appoint the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister as the primary responsible official, with the Democrat Party to monitor progress quarterly. He also called on the Prime Minister to direct border-management protocols with Myanmar to prevent and suppress transnational crime including scams, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and smuggling.
