Hat Yai Distributes Free Sandbags as Southern Storm Warned
Hat Yai municipality has begun distributing free sandbags to residents to prepare for potential flooding, limiting each household to 20 bags. The Southern Meteorological Center has issued a heavy rain warning for ten southern provinces from October 9 to 13, citing risks of flash floods and overflowing streams. Residents are flocking to the sandbag collection point behind Jiranakorn Stadium to protect their homes.
Residents praised the sandbag distribution as a valuable preparation that eases anxiety, noting it was far better than last year when no such support was available. They said they quickly brought the sand and bags home to place around doorways and other vulnerable spots, calling it a proactive measure that helps them respond promptly to flood threats. The Southern Meteorological Center’s eastern division issued its second bulletin (15/2569) warning of heavy to very heavy rain across the eastern southern region from October 9 to 13, driven by a strengthening high‑pressure system from China and moderate southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and southern Thailand. The forecast predicts accumulated rainfall that could trigger sudden flooding and flash floods, especially on hillslopes and low‑lying areas.
