Heavy Downpours Threat Floods Across Northern Thailand
Thailand's meteorological department issued its 12th heavy rainfall alert for northern and northeastern regions through August 21, warning of potential flash flooding in foothill and low-lying areas as a monsoon trough and deep low-pressure
On August 21, 2025, the Thai Meteorological Department issued its 12th alert warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across upper Thailand through August 21. Northern and upper northeastern regions face the greatest risk due to a monsoon trough moving through these areas and a deep low-pressure system near Hainan, China, combined with strong southwest monsoon winds over the Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand.
Residents are urged to be alert to dangers from heavy and accumulated rainfall, which may cause flash flooding and flash floods, particularly in foothill areas near water courses and in lowland basins. Travel through repeatedly flood-prone areas, especially low-lying zones where standing water may occur, should be avoided. The Meteorological Department has named 38 provinces under heavy rainfall alert.
Waves in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand are moderately strong, with heights of 2-3 meters, rising above 3 meters in thunderstorm zones. The lower Andaman Sea has waves around 2 meters, exceeding 2 meters during storms. Fishermen are advised to exercise caution and avoid thunderstorm areas. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf should remain ashore during the period.
The public is urged to plan daily activities and travel carefully during this period. Weather updates are available from the Thai Meteorological Department website at http://www.tmd.go.th or by calling 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182, available 24 hours daily. The next alert will be issued on August 21, 2025 at 5 p.m.
