Authorities in Mae Hao subdistrict, Mae Sai district, Mae Hong Son province received notice from the victim's wife that at 11 a.m. on August 20 a mudslide came down and crushed a hut in a rice field. The 56-year-old man was unable to escape in time and died at the hut in Baan Mae Suwan Noi, Moo 12, Mae Hao subdistrict. His wife managed to flee the hut and walked back to the village to report the incident to the village headman and alert rescue workers from the subdistrict administration, health clinic, and police. At 2 p.m., officials descended to inspect the site, which was approximately 2 kilometers from the village in a deep ravine, and retrieved the body by 4 p.m.

Suratchai Chopsamboonsok, secretary of the Mae Hao subdistrict administration, revealed that heavy rain caused the road through the back section of the administrative area to be completely cut off. Landslides have blocked the route in multiple places, making it impassable for all vehicles. Six villages—Moo 5 Mae Chang, Moo 6 Dong Khu, Moo 7 Dong Luang, Moo 8 Hui Pla Gang, Moo 9 Hui Pang Pha, and Moo 11 Khun Wong—are now isolated.

Local farmers preparing cabbage for sale cannot transport their agricultural products, risking severe crop losses if the road remains closed. Teachers at the local school are also unable to leave the area. The lack of electricity and communications infrastructure is hampering coordination efforts. Mae Hao subdistrict administrator Wicha Prasert announced that tomorrow the subdistrict will coordinate with local residents to use machinery to urgently reopen the roads affected by heavy rain, flooding, and landslides.

Deputy Prime Minister Ueachai Wongsuwan, who also serves as Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and chairs the northern region's flood prevention and drought management committee, traveled to Nan Province on August 20 to monitor the flood situation. He convened an urgent meeting of all northern provincial governors to prepare for an incoming surge of floodwaters, ordering the establishment of emergency command centers (war rooms) in every province and calling for integration of assistance across all sectors.

The meeting was prompted by flooding and mudslides affecting multiple northern provinces including Sukhothai, Mae Hong Son, and Phrae. Attendees included Deputy Interior Minister Jetsada Thaisedsai, Nan Provincial Governor Chainoraong Wongyai, and Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Director-General Theeraphatsn Katchamat, along with governors from all northern provinces.

Ueachai emphasized the need for close water level monitoring and timely public warnings in at-risk areas to minimize losses. The meeting established five urgent orders for northern provinces: establishing single-command war rooms headed by provincial governors; preparing equipment including pumps, vehicles, and rescue gear; setting up early warning systems and evacuation plans; positioning personnel on standby; and reporting emergencies in real time to the deputy prime minister, Interior Ministry, and disaster prevention department.

Beyond these defensive measures, the meeting also evaluated the situation and prepared contingency plans with two additional management approaches: coordinating with the private sector to mobilize resources and support, and integrating assistance from other agencies to enable rapid and comprehensive relief and rehabilitation.

A 60-year-old driver accidentally accelerated while startled, causing his car to collide with a motorcycle and plunge into a drainage canal, fatally injuring the rider. The victim's family said he was on his way to pick up his child from school.

At 5:30 p.m. on August 20, 2025, Mueang Trat police received a report of a vehicle-motorcycle collision that sent both vehicles into a drainage canal, with one fatality. The incident occurred in Moo 5, Nong Semet subdistrict, Mueang district, Trat province.

At the scene, officers found a bronze-gray Toyota sedan with Chachoengsao license plate GL-1828 submerged in the canal, alongside a white-blue Honda Wave motorcycle with Trat license plate 1 KKH 3963, also in the water.

The victim was identified as Prasert, 48, who was struck by the sedan and pinned underwater. Rescue workers and local residents struggled to lift the car away from his body. A crane was brought in to extract him from the water with great difficulty. The sedan driver was identified as Chatchai, 60, who sustained injuries and was taken to Phra Piyamaharat Hospital for treatment.

According to witness accounts, Chatchai had driven to visit a friend in a nearby soi but found no one home, so he was backing out when he encountered Prasert's motorcycle crossing the main road. Startled, he accidentally pressed the accelerator, striking the motorcycle with great force and dragging the rider into the canal, resulting in his death.

When Prasert's daughter and relatives arrived at the scene, they wept upon seeing his body. Family members stated that Prasert had been riding to pick up his child from school when the accident occurred.

Mueang Trat police documented evidence at the scene and are following up on the injured driver's condition and statement to proceed with legal proceedings.

Authorities raided two large warehouses and seized over 68 tonnes of counterfeit dog and cat food valued at more than 30 million baht, found to be manufactured in China and illegally imported for online sales in Thailand.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, through the Phra Phirun Task Force, coordinated the Department of Livestock, Customs Department, and Central Investigation Police to conduct searches at major warehouses in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakan. The action followed complaints about unregistered pet food being sold online without proper import licenses or Department of Livestock registration.

Officers seized pet food brands Mr. Vet and Bite of Wild, which originated from China. A total of 118 shipments weighing approximately 68,680 kilograms were confiscated, valued at over 30 million baht. The Samut Sakhon warehouse contained 67 shipments weighing 17,651 kilograms worth over 7 million baht, while the Samut Prakan warehouse held 51 shipments weighing 51,028 kilograms worth over 23 million baht.

Sample products were sent for laboratory analysis to verify safety. The operation charged the defendants under the Animal Feed Quality Control Act for importing unregistered feed without authorization, and under the Customs Act for bringing goods into the kingdom without proper customs procedures. Authorities said they would continue investigating the company owners and smuggling networks involved.

Local Exam Cheating Scandal Raises Fresh Questions

Over 5,900 local government officials were removed from exam lists after investigations uncovered widespread fraud involving altered answer sheets and billions of baht in suspicious payments. The scandal has sparked questions about the orig

Local Exam Cheating Scandal Raises Fresh Questions
1h ago Khaosod

The local government civil service exam fraud case continues to dominate headlines as investigations reveal deep-rooted corruption in test score manipulation. Intensive scrutiny has exposed numerous irregularities linked to multiple groups, resulting in a complete overhaul of the exam candidate roster. The Interior Ministry confirmed that 5,925 officials implicated in fraud were removed from the local exam list, with legal proceedings launched against several officials, most prominently a former director-general of the Local Government Promotion Department accused of altering answer sheets.

Declaring this matter resolved would be premature, as public skepticism persists despite official assurances of comprehensive action. Data disclosed by Deputy Police General Thawi Sodsoong regarding a legal commission investigation only deepens suspicion. Before the original exam results were announced, the 19-member Central Local Government Employee Examination Committee held the authority to declare winners and losers—yet weeks later, answer sheets were mysteriously altered to produce higher passing scores. This raises critical questions: on what criteria did the committee base its initial decisions, and did they even review actual test scores or simply follow predetermined lists?

Beyond the altered sheets, investigators must answer who ordered the tampering and who orchestrated it. What accountability will the 19 committee members face for announcing results unlinked to actual scores—did they act alone or under direction from above? Reports suggest approximately 4.5 billion baht changed hands in connection with the exam fraud, yet the path of those funds remains opaque: who received payments, what were they used for, and do they connect to 2024 election planning as some allege?

Evidence suggests a coordinated scheme rather than isolated wrongdoing. Why was the original exam contractor replaced, removing Burapha University's bid after it faced complaints? What defects in the state tender process justified canceling the original winner? Could this be the first brick in a larger corruption foundation? The government's lack of curiosity about these questions is telling. Thailand appears destined to face recurring crises of this nature.

Northern Thailand Floods: Three Provinces Mobilize Hospital Response

Northern Thailand Floods: Three Provinces Mobilize Hospital Response
1h ago Khaosod

Northern Thailand faces major flooding. The Public Health Ministry has alerted hospitals in three provinces to prepare for flood waters. On August 20, 2025, Health Minister Pattana Prompattana chaired a remote emergency medical operations meeting to monitor flood, storm, and landslide situations across the region.

Deputy Secretary-General Veeravut Imsaranyu reported that as of noon, three provinces—Nan, Sukhothai, and Mae Hong Son—were affected. In Nan province, six health facilities have been impacted. Nan Hospital has suspended non-emergency medical services and surgeries from August 20 to 23 and relocated its emergency department to a field hospital. Several health stations in Nan district and surrounding areas have closed. Sukhothai province has reported no direct service disruptions but is preparing for incoming floodwaters from Phrae. Mae Hong Son has only one operational road and may face patient transfer challenges; authorities are preparing helicopter evacuation if needed.

The emergency operations center has issued directives including: monitoring weather forecasts and flood warnings, preparing care for vulnerable groups such as bedridden patients, oxygen users, dialysis patients, pregnant women, and elderly and disabled persons in high-risk areas; verifying death and injury data; prioritizing hospital services and operating field hospitals; coordinating emergency medical transport routes; inspecting sanitation and facilities at evacuation shelters; and ensuring medical teams, medicines, equipment, and supplies are ready for deployment.

Illegal ID Card Scheme Exposes Gaps in Thailand's Registry System

An illegal ID card scheme involving corrupt officials, intermediaries, and landlords has exposed serious gaps in Thailand's population registry system, with authorities discovering over 1,300 foreign names illegally registered in Bangkok ap

Illegal ID Card Scheme Exposes Gaps in Thailand's Registry System
1h ago Khaosod

The illegal pink ID card case is not simply about issuing documents to foreigners unlawfully—it represents a breach of the state's population registration system, with intermediaries, landlords, and corrupt government officials operating as an organized network similar to previous high-profile cases.

The "Sweep Din Daeng" operation began at a Din Daeng apartment building. Officers randomly inspected just 3 rooms, each 34 square meters, and discovered 35–64 residents registered per room. When checks extended to over 5,700 rooms, 44 additional rooms contained 1,366 foreign names, mostly registered in 2567.

Within the operation, roles were clearly divided. Intermediaries recruited clients and collected fees. Landlords received approximately 5,000 baht in exchange for allowing foreign names to be added to their household registry. Government officials played the most critical role by approving transfers and issuing cards.

The resulting harm is substantial. Pink ID cards gave holders access to education and health services, enabled financial transactions and bank account openings, and were used for identity fraud in illegal schemes such as opening shell accounts and facilitating cross-border money laundering.

Seven people have been arrested and detained so far, including government officials, intermediaries, landlords, and accomplices. Involved officials have been suspended from duty pending investigation, and financial tracking has been referred to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

A more serious concern emerged from claims by intermediaries that this scheme operates "in every district." If true, this is not a problem isolated to Din Daeng, where over 3,200 suspicious cases were found, but a systemic failure. Bangkok authorities must conduct a comprehensive audit of all 50 districts dating back to 2560–2569, focusing on households with unusually large numbers of registered residents.

State agencies investigating the illegal card scheme must pursue those responsible to the source—not just arrest intermediaries and stop there. They must trace all money flows, chain of command, and all involved officials completely.

When population registry records are bought and sold to illegally register foreigners, the ultimate victims are Thai citizens nationwide.

At the same time, community members must serve as eyes and ears, since official resources are limited and some officials are implicated. Residents may notice irregularities first—homes with dozens or hundreds of registered names, unknown faces moving in and out. Such observations are crucial leads.

When people report suspicious activity, they not only help prevent security threats and crime and protect public funds—they also safeguard their own rights and social benefits.

Husband Releases Evidence Against Wife and School Principal

A husband released evidence against his wife and a school principal after hiring a private detective, announcing plans to pursue legal action despite online skepticism about the case's authenticity.

Husband Releases Evidence Against Wife and School Principal
2h ago Khaosod

A husband has released evidence against his wife and a school principal following an investigation by a private detective he hired. The case sparked significant online criticism, though some observers questioned its authenticity, claiming it was fabricated for attention and pointing out that only two men were seen in a vehicle without corroborating evidence of both subjects together.

Frustrated by the backlash and pressure from online skeptics, the husband posted on Facebook announcing the end of his marriage and his intention to pursue legal action. He released several pieces of evidence including their marriage certificate from Lahan Sai District in Buriram Province, intimate chat messages between his wife and the school principal with exchanges like "This embrace will always be warm and safe for you," video call screenshots, location tracking data showing meetings in Lahan Sai District, and surveillance photos from his investigator's team.

The private investigator responded to critical comments, asserting that the evidence is solid and expressing readiness for legal proceedings to determine the truth. The husband stated that all further communication will be handled exclusively by his lawyer, signaling the shift from public dispute to formal legal channels.
