Hun Sen Overwhelmed by Money Requests on Social Media
Hun Sen complained on social media about receiving nearly 20 daily money requests via Telegram and WhatsApp, ranging from home purchases to university tuition, prompting him to warn he'll delete contacts who message without permission.
On September 22, Hun Sen posted a photo holding his 23rd grandchild on the occasion of the infant's one-month birthday. The child is the daughter of Hun Manet, Hun Sen's youngest son and current Deputy Prime Minister. However, beyond celebrating this milestone, Hun Sen used the post to air frustrations about receiving nearly 20 messages daily via Telegram and WhatsApp from people requesting financial assistance.
Requests have included funds for home purchases, motorcycles, and private meetings, with some asking for tens of thousands of dollars for overseas university tuition that exceeds even what his own children spent abroad. Hun Sen noted that from just four people in a single day, the total requests exceeded tens of thousands of dollars—far beyond the hundreds or thousands he typically provides for education and living expenses for struggling women and students.
Beyond financial requests, Hun Sen complained about constant daily messaging, including voice and text messages sent when his children leave for school in the morning and return in the afternoon. He emphasized that he and his sons, particularly the Prime Minister, are extremely busy and should not be contacted for personal matters without invitation.
Hun Sen announced he will delete social media connections from anyone who contacts him without permission. He cautioned that daily visits or messages about unrelated matters cause annoyance, and warned that without posting this notice, such requests would continue to increase as more people obtain his contact information. He acknowledged this post was uncharacteristic but necessary to address the escalating problem.
