Thailand Returns to World Stage as IMF-World Bank Host
Thailand will host the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in October, returning to the global economic stage for the first time since 1991 and showcasing Thai products, culture, and development philosophy to world finance leaders.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nititharnprasit announced on September 26 that Thailand will host the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings from October 12–18, 2026, marking a major opportunity for Thai exports, tourism, investment, and the country's role on the global economic stage. Thailand last hosted this meeting 35 years ago in 1991, and Ekniti described the return engagement as a chance to attract finance ministers, central bank governors, and investors worldwide while showcasing Thai products, textiles, arts, and culture on a global platform.
The Finance Ministry and Bank of Thailand will curate Thai goods from across all regions for exhibition, with business matching sessions and conferences expected to generate new investment opportunities. Ekniti called the meeting a "financial Olympics," with Thailand being one of only a few nations hosting twice. Under the theme "Entering New Horizon," Thailand will propose global economic agendas focused on empowering people and building resilience in an unstable world.
A key highlight on October 13—coinciding with the memorial of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's passing—will be a Royal Pavilion honoring his legacy and presenting his development philosophy. The pavilion will showcase royal initiatives that emphasize people-centered development, aligning with Thailand's conference theme of empowering communities. Ekniti hopes global finance leaders will witness the King's genius for development and understand how his vision helped Thai people adapt to various crises and changes.
