The International Takraw Federation will announce sanctions on five Thai players who tried to throw the World Cup final to Malaysia during the King's Cup tournament in Bangkok this month.

International Committee to Decide Sanctions on Five Thai Takraw Players During King's Cup
31 Jul Khaosod

Thai Takraw Association president Thana Chaiyaprasoet has revealed that the International Takraw Federation will render its decision on five Thai national team players during the King's Cup tournament. The investigation was launched after the five players sought to forfeit to Malaysia in the final of the 2026 Takraw World Cup in Malaysia last May. At a press conference on August 31st regarding the 39th King's Cup world championship tournament, Thana stated that the international federation's committee will complete its ruling before the King's Cup concludes. During the King's Cup competition from August 4-11 at Fashion Island shopping center, all International Takraw Federation committee members will travel to Thailand to observe the tournament, with the federation planning to finalize its decision before the event ends. The Thai takraw organization has already accepted the upcoming ruling and will decide on any appeals only after the committee's decision is officially announced. Although all five players are important members of the Thai national team and cannot currently compete in any events during this period, Thailand has already prepared backup contingency plans in the event all five receive sanctions.

CHIANG RAI — Heavy rainfall has caused the Lao and Korn rivers to overflow their banks and flood homes in parts of Chiang Rai, affecting at least 50 households, while authorities warn that water levels could rise further.

The flood situation in Chiang Rai remained under close watch following continuous accumulated rainfall in upper areas of the province. The heavy rain caused water levels in the Lao and Korn rivers to rise rapidly.

The overflowing water subsequently inundated homes in Pa O Don Chai subdistrict, Mueang district, with at least 50 households initially reported affected. Ten households in Rong Khun village, Moo 1, located along the Lao River, were flooded, while another 40 households in San Sali village, Moo 5, along the Korn River, were affected.

Local administrative organisations and relevant agencies were surveying the damage and preparing to provide assistance to affected residents. Pa O Don Chai Mayor Sirimongkol Khamdee said several days of continuous rain had caused the Korn River to overflow and flood nearby homes. Meanwhile, water levels in the Lao River behind Rong Khun Market had risen rapidly, inundating riverside and low-lying areas at several locations.

Chiang Rai Governor Chuchip Phongchai has ordered the provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office and all relevant agencies to closely monitor the situation, speed up damage assessments and provide assistance to residents as quickly as possible. Authorities have also been instructed to maintain continuous surveillance as water levels remain at risk of rising further.

Border Special Economic Zone Sees 80% Tourist Drop After New Checkpoint Opens

Border Special Economic Zone Sees 80% Tourist Drop After New Checkpoint Opens
31 Jul Khaosod

The Samakkham border special economic zone (old checkpoint) in Sadao district, Songkhla province, is experiencing unprecedented economic hardship following the opening of the new Sadao checkpoint and associated traffic route changes. Tourist arrivals have dropped by 80%, with sales declining by 90%, prompting fears that businesses will be forced to shut down as accumulated losses become unsustainable.

Shop owner Vannuree Samaalai reported that customer numbers have fallen more than 80% since the new checkpoint opened, with some days bringing virtually no customers. Although the old checkpoint remains operational, traffic management protocols now direct all buses and vans exclusively to the new facility, leaving the old checkpoint severely underutilized. While cars and motorcycles can use both checkpoints, the old one is understaffed and time-consuming, with officers sometimes directing customers to the new checkpoint instead.

As fewer people pass through the old checkpoint, foot traffic to the surrounding business zone has collapsed. Multiple operators say they are struggling financially and are calling on the government for intervention. Hotel operator Dr. Sitthipong Sitthipattraprapha noted that businesses in this special economic zone have operated for over 50 years and previously generated thousands of millions of baht in revenue, but now face their worst economic crisis ever. Operators are urging the government to assist them before they are forced to close permanently.

Thailand's Foreign Minister defended the embassy's response to YouTuber Hloun Solo's death in Georgia, saying Georgian authorities delayed notifying them until July 28—two weeks after he died on July 14.

Foreign Minister Defends Thai Embassy Response in Hloun Solo Death
31 Jul Khaosod

On July 31, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkhaw addressed criticism that the Thai embassy worked slowly in assisting Baworthat Phangsuk, also known as Hloun Solo, a well-known YouTuber who died in Georgia. The embassy announced it only learned of his death on July 28-29, though he had actually died on July 14. The Foreign Minister clarified that the embassy was not informed earlier because Georgian authorities did not notify Thailand until July 28-29, at which point the embassy acted immediately. He emphasized the embassy performed its duties fully and quickly upon notification. The minister also questioned why Georgian authorities took so long to report the death and confirmed that the embassy has been conducting an investigation into the cause of death, coordinating with the hotel, and working to expedite the process to return the body to Thailand. He noted that a medical examination may also be required.

Priahth Unveils Line Chat Contradicting Sorachat's Account in Senate Fraud Case

Pheu Thai deputy leader Priahth presented Line chat messages and financial records showing 553,600 baht transferred from Senate candidate Sorachat to an associate, who then distributed funds to seven Senate candidates, contradicting Soracha

Priahth Unveils Line Chat Contradicting Sorachat's Account in Senate Fraud Case
31 Jul Khaosod

On July 31, 2569, MP Priahth Watchrasindhoo, list MP and deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party, stated that after revealing financial transaction evidence linking Sorachat and a Senate candidate from Nong Bua Lamphu, he believes Sorachat's responses contain significant contradictions with the new evidence he intends to present. The evidence includes multiple transfers of 553,600 baht from Sorachat to Phannipha, and subsequent transfers of 105,000 baht from Phannipha to seven Senate candidates from Nong Bua Lamphu between June and August 2567.

Priahth outlined three main points of contradiction, ordered from least to most serious:

1. Regarding the transfer of over 550,000 baht from two banks to Phannipha: Sorachat claimed the transfers were unrelated to the Senate election and characterized them as necessary liquidity for Phannipha's operations, including water, electricity, and vehicle repair costs. However, Priahth contends this explanation is insufficiently clear to rule out a connection to the Senate election, especially given that Phannipha subsequently distributed 105,000 baht to seven Senate candidates through bank transfers.

2. Regarding Sorachat's acquaintance with the seven Senate candidates: Sorachat initially told BBC on July 26 that he did not know any of the seven candidates, except Sanunchai Chuayudamthikit, whom he met later through a friend. However, on July 30, Sorachat told another media outlet that he knew three of the seven candidates who were part of his team. Priahth questions why Sorachat's account changed within four days and asks which version is credible.

3. Regarding Sorachat's relationship with Phannipha during and after the Senate election: Sorachat acknowledged that Phannipha was his campaign helper when he ran as an MP candidate in 2566. However, he has consistently stated in interviews that Phannipha was never involved in any aspect of his Senate work, either during the election campaign or after his appointment as Senator. Priahth argues this statement appears to contradict Line chat messages between Phannipha and Sanunchai, which he presented as evidence.

Hudson Praises Malaysia's Strong Start, Confirms Thailand's Game Plan

Thailand coach Anthony Hudson acknowledged Malaysia's strong squad ahead of their ASEAN Cup clash on August 1, saying his team has prepared a tactical plan to counter their balanced play and fast wingers.

Hudson Praises Malaysia's Strong Start, Confirms Thailand's Game Plan
31 Jul Khaosod

Thailand national team coach Anthony Hudson acknowledged Malaysia's strength and impressive start in the ASEAN Cup, but confirmed that the Thai team has prepared a tactical plan to face them. On July 31 at Rajamangala Stadium, the AFF Futsal Cup 2026 organizers held a pre-match press conference before Thailand's second Group B match against Malaysia on August 1 at 8:00 p.m.

Anthony Hudson, Thailand's head coach, said: "We are preparing the team just like we did for the Laos game. We analyzed our previous weaknesses to improve them. The key priority is raising our players' fitness level. We are excited to play at home surrounded by our fans, and we already have a plan for the Malaysia game."

Responding to Malaysia's claim of having an advantage due to fewer matches played, Hudson disagreed: "I don't agree much with that, because after this game we will face the same competition schedule as other teams. I believe Malaysia has already prepared their team well and they have performed excellently. We hope this will be a good match."

On Malaysia's squad strength, Hudson noted: "Malaysia has good players in every position—a strong defense, good forwards, left-backs, and fast wingers on both sides. We still don't know Endrick dos Santos' condition, as he's an important player for them. Overall, Malaysia is a team with well-balanced play."

Meanwhile, young Thai striker Kannada Khamyok said: "We are ready now. Training has gone well with great team atmosphere. The senior players give us good guidance. We have one clear goal: to win against Malaysia for our fans."

Police Help Elderly Woman After Bank Visit Yields Only Handful of Baht

Police rescued a 76-year-old woman who traveled 20 kilometers to a bank in Sisaket only to find her accounts emptied and closed, leaving her stranded with no money for the return home.

Police Help Elderly Woman After Bank Visit Yields Only Handful of Baht
31 Jul Khaosod

At 2 p.m. on July 31, 2025, Mueang Sisaket police received a report from a concerned citizen about an elderly woman at a bank branch on Thepha Road in Mueang Sisaket District, Sisaket Province, who was attempting to withdraw money. Officers discovered the woman, 76-year-old Thong Muang, sitting near an ATM with a betel nut basket, personal belongings, and documents neatly wrapped and tucked under her arm. She had traveled from Mak Khiap Subdistrict, roughly 20 kilometers away.

Upon inspection, police found three bank passbooks showing account activity only during 2566, with current balances totaling mere tens of baht in interest alone. Thong Muang explained she had come to withdraw money for expenses but found nothing as expected. A village headman had previously informed her that someone had withdrawn all her funds. Several of her accounts had been closed.

Nangchudatip, a 47-year-old citizen who witnessed the situation, became concerned when she learned Thong Muang had no relatives to pick her up and no money for the return journey home. Fearing the elderly woman would attempt the long trek alone and risk harm, she contacted police for assistance.

Lieutenant Bunluean of Mueang Sisaket Police noted he has known Thong Muang for years. She regularly visits banks, police stations, and various agencies inquiring about her accounts and missing funds. She travels approximately 20 kilometers from home, visiting multiple institutions in search of answers. Her memory appears intermittent, causing confusion about her finances. Police provided immediate assistance and prioritized her safety. "If she has relatives or family members, we urge them to provide close support," Bunluean appealed. "At her age, traveling alone from home over such distances to track down financial matters poses serious risks and potential danger."

Thailand Launches Trekking School to Promote Sustainable Eco-Tourism
31 Jul Khaosod

Thailand's Department of National Parks unveiled the 'Trekking School' at Khao Yai National Park on July 31, designed to elevate eco-tourism standards in accordance with the Leave No Trace principle. Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin officially launched the program titled "Trekking School—First Steps Into the Forest With Understanding," administered by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation. The school aims to address environmental impacts, prevent accidents, and instill proper knowledge, skills, and attitudes in nature trekkers before they enter protected forest areas. Minister Suchat emphasized that responsible trekking extends beyond tourist safety to encompass responsibility for forests and wildlife that everyone must help protect. The Trekking School will serve as a crucial foundation for imparting correct knowledge and values to both officials and tourists, enabling Thailand's nature tourism to develop sustainably alongside resource conservation.

According to Saiyasudjai Sunchaowariddhi, head of the National Parks Division, hiking within national parks has grown increasingly popular, yet rising numbers of inadequately trained trekkers have created safety risks, accidents, litter accumulation, and ecosystem disruption. In response, the department has established ten Trekking Schools nationwide under the environment minister's policy to develop hiking instructors equipped with proper knowledge, skills, and attitudes aligned with Leave No Trace principles. These schools will expand into ecological learning centers at national parks and forests throughout the country, transforming casual tourists into responsible trekkers.

Beyond promoting sustainable tourism, the Department of National Parks plans to expand its Trekking School network across national parks and forests nationwide to raise standards for Thailand's nature tourism at both national and international levels, ensuring valuable natural resources are preserved for future generations.

PM Pledges Full Support for Landmine Clearance Operations

A Thai soldier lost his foot stepping on an old landmine in eastern Thailand, prompting PM Anutin to pledge full government support for ongoing demining operations along the border.

PM Pledges Full Support for Landmine Clearance Operations
31 Jul Khaosod

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on July 31 that the government will fully support landmine clearance operations to protect national sovereignty, expressing sympathy for officers risking their lives in the work. His statement followed an incident in Ban Nong Chan, Kok Sung District, Sra Kaew Province, where a patrol soldier stepped on an old landmine and sustained severe injuries with loss of his left foot.

Anutin acknowledged that clearance personnel perform their duties with good intentions and concern for public safety, and that some deviation from planned routes may occur during operations. He stressed that such officers deserve full care and support from their commanders during each patrol. He clarified that the incident was not an attack but contact with an old landmine of unknown origin, being cleared in accordance with bilateral agreements between the two countries.

Regarding equipment and tools needed for clearance operations, the Prime Minister stated the government will provide full support for machinery and equipment necessary to protect national sovereignty. "I have discussed details with the military, and once we reach agreement, we will not hesitate on this matter," Anutin said.
