A parent has shared an account of the moments when teachers helped guide children trapped in classrooms down from the building to safety outside the school. The parent praised all staff members for performing their duties excellently despite being in a dangerous situation. On August 7, 2025, a shooting incident occurred inside Thepsirin School in Nonthaburi, resulting in multiple injuries and deaths. One parent later recounted the events and shared a video clip recorded by their child during the incident, expressing how the footage nearly caused them to panic before reaching the school. The child recounted: "We were in class when we heard gunshots from outside the room. The teacher quickly ran and locked the door just in time, then had all the children crouch under their desks. An injured classmate ran in to take shelter with us. The gunman only walked past. After that, the teacher signaled us to run out of the classroom and down the building, past bloodstains on the stairs, until we safely exited the school. Thank you to relatives who called to encourage me. We will take a long break now and wait for safety measures to be implemented. I want to sincerely thank the teacher in the video who helped call down the children trapped in the classroom and gradually evacuated them from the building, and thank all staff members who performed their duties well even while in a dangerous situation."

Thailand's Geological Disaster Operation Center issued a landslide and flash flood warning for 14 provinces through August 9, as heavy monsoon rains exceed 100mm daily across northern and southern regions.

Geological Agency Warns 14 Provinces of Heavy Rains, Landslides
7 Aug Khaosod

On August 7, 2025, the Geological Disaster Operation Center of the Department of Mineral Resources under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issued an alert for landslides and flash floods expected over the next 1-3 days. The warning covers 14 provinces across northern, northeastern, eastern, and southern Thailand: Tak, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, Phayao, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phichit, Phetchabun, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, and Phang Nga, with heightened vigilance required from August 7-9, 2025.

The warning was triggered by a monsoon trough passing over the upper northern and upper northeastern regions, interacting with a low-pressure system in the Gulf of Tonkin, combined with a strengthening southwest monsoon. This has caused continuous heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters in 24 hours in some areas, with flash flooding already occurring in several locations and potential for landslides increasing.

The Department of Mineral Resources has requested volunteers and network coordinators to maintain continuous monitoring and rainfall measurements. Communities are urged to remain on alert and report any landslide or flash flood incidents to relevant authorities, following established disaster response protocols.

A Grade 9 student opened fire at Thepsirin School in Nonthaburi, killing and injuring multiple victims before fatally shooting himself with an automatic weapon. Before arriving at school, the student had also shot and killed his grandparents at home. Khru Phuea's partner tearfully shared her final moments with him, saying that this morning before work he told her "I'll go first" and they hugged as they did every day, never imagining such tragedy would strike the school. When she learned of the shooting, a friend called to say someone's daughter had been shot, so she tried calling Khru Phuea but got no answer. Filled with worry, she rushed to the school, only to be told that Khru Phuea had died. His sister-in-law described him as the homeroom teacher for Grade 9, Class 11, in a different classroom from the shooter. She said everyone who spoke to her—students and guardians alike—described Khru Phuea as an excellent teacher who cared deeply about his students, offered guidance, and never scolded or threatened children. Many students considered him their favorite teacher. Regarding reports that the shooter may have targeted Khru Phuea first, the sister-in-law suggested the shooter's mental state was likely unstable, noting that he had also killed his grandparents beforehand, indicating possible external triggers or other contributing factors.

Official Denies Corruption Claims in Local Exam Cancellation

A senior Interior Ministry official denied corruption allegations surrounding the cancellation of a 2566 local government exam, saying a fact-finding committee investigation prompted the delay to strengthen anti-corruption measures.

Official Denies Corruption Claims in Local Exam Cancellation
7 Aug Khaosod

On August 7, 2569, Nirat Pongsittitaworn, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry and acting director of the Department of Local Administration (DLA), issued a clarification statement regarding allegations of corruption and interference in the 2566 local government civil service examination. The statement responds to concerns raised by Rangsiman Rom, chair of the parliamentary law and human rights committee, who had publicly questioned the integrity of the exam process and the decision to cancel the contractor selection and examination itself on August 6, 2569.

The DLA explained that the 2566 exam was conducted by the Central Committee for Civil Service and Local Government Officials, with two state universities submitting proposals: Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi and Burapha University. Initially, Rajamangala University won the bid, but after Burapha University filed a legal appeal, the Appeal Committee of the Comptroller General's Office ruled the appeal valid and awarded the contract to Burapha University on December 28, 2566.

However, an anti-corruption network group filed a complaint on January 4, 2567, requesting changes to the exam methodology, review of the university hiring process, and investigation into potential misconduct. In response, the Interior Ministry appointed a fact-finding committee on January 16, 2567. A joint meeting on January 17, 2567, involving multiple agencies including the Anti-Corruption Commission and Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, resulted in an agreement to delay signing the exam contract pending the outcome of the fact-finding investigation. The DLA committed to implementing detailed anti-corruption measures at every stage of the examination process.

7 Aug Khaosod

A Grade 9 student carried out a shooting at Thepsirintan School in Nonthaburi province, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries before the shooter took his own life. Prior to the school attack, the boy had also fatally shot his grandparents at their residence. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On August 7, the boy's uncle revealed new details about the family situation. According to information from the boy's father and grandfather, the student was an academically capable child who spoke very little. The uncle stated he rarely conversed with his nephew due to infrequent visits home, but emphasized that the grandparents were not strict disciplinarians and almost never physically punished the boy.

Regarding gaming habits, the uncle said that when he visited, his nephew primarily played Minecraft and he never observed the boy playing shooting games. He also stated he never saw his nephew handle a firearm. The grandfather kept guns locked securely in a personal closet with a tight lock and never allowed the uncle or his brother to handle them. The uncle could not explain how his nephew discovered the location of the gun cabinet key.

Gold Surges as Fed Rate Hike Bets Ease

Gold prices hit their highest level in seven weeks as easing Fed rate hike expectations and progress in U.S.-Iran talks reduce inflation concerns, with analysts projecting further gains to $4,890–$5,250 per troy ounce.

Gold Surges as Fed Rate Hike Bets Ease
7 Aug Khaosod

YLG Bullion International CEO Paworn Nuwattanathrip said gold's climb this week marks its highest level in nearly seven weeks and strongest daily gain since February, driven by progress in U.S.-Iran talks over reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which has dampened oil prices and reduced expectations of Fed rate hikes in September. CME FedWatch Tool data shows investors have cut odds of a September hike to just 54.5%, down from 60–70% previously.

Markets increasingly believe inflation pressure has eased, signaling gold's downtrend may be ending. However, YLG sees risk of one more dip to $4,000–$3,850 if talks collapse, before a rebound upward. The firm projects medium-term consolidation only into Q2 2025, citing sustained central bank buying—the World Gold Council reported global central banks purchased 289 net tonnes in Q2 2024, up 62% year-on-year, while 45% of surveyed central banks plan to increase holdings over the next 12 months.

YLG's target for the next uptrend is $4,890–$5,250 per troy ounce internationally, or 76,500–82,200 baht per baht-weight domestically (at 33.08 baht per dollar). The firm recently launched dollar-denominated gold trading (Gold Spot) in real-time for 99.99% gold (minimum 1 troy ounce or 1 kilogram) and 96.5% gold (minimum 10 baht-weight) to shield investors from currency fluctuation.
